Will Angus always be “Gus”?

I love the name Angus, but really dislike Gus, which I’m worried it would always be shortened to?

I also like Hamish. Any other names of that type that I might like?

Fraser? Calder? Brodie?

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 09/08/2019 11:28

Not necessarily.

It could be Gus.

Or it could be Ang, Angie, Angoo....right through to completely leftfield nicknames that naturally come about because of a like, dislike, hobby, hair colour, shoe size, because he fell in a puddle once etc.

So Angus could end up being called Baffer or Spink or Toodle or anything!

Celebelly · 09/08/2019 11:29

Also I know a couple of Anguses and neither are Gus. In fact their names aren't ever shortened at all that I can recall!

LoafofSellotape · 09/08/2019 11:31

I know an Angus, who is called Anus at school so it would be a definite no from me.

Celebelly · 09/08/2019 11:33

Hector, Dougal, Lachlan, Ewan, Fergus, Murray, Calum, Gregor, Innes, Lyall (can you tell I'm trapped under a sleeping baby?!)

GoldPaperStars · 09/08/2019 11:33

LoafofSellotape Oh the horror!!

How does anyone ever decide on a name. It’s so difficult to think of all of the possible ridiculous nicknames or teasing that might come out of it.

BuzzShitbagBobbly Really good point. Perhaps I should just chill out about it?

The only Angus I know is always called Angus.

DramaAlpaca · 09/08/2019 11:34

I only know one Angus and his name is never shortened.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 09/08/2019 11:34

I know two people called Angus, amd they are both known as...Angus!

userabcname · 09/08/2019 11:35

I know two boys called Angus and neither shorten their names.

londonloves · 09/08/2019 11:35

I have an Angus. Only one person has ever called him Gus, I think it's quite cute. My in laws called him Angie for a while which I put a stop to!
Re the anus thing... I think kids will call each other names regardless of what their name is, it's unavoidable.

londonloves · 09/08/2019 11:36

Also - Fergus and Hamish are great!
If you go with any of these and aren't Scottish you will get lots of questions as to why you chose it - we say we named him after a burger 😂😂

dementedma · 09/08/2019 11:37

I know 4 Anguses ( Angi?) here in Scotland and none of them are known as Gus. Other names used round here which you might like are Hamish, Hector, Rhuraidh, Lachlan, Struan,Alec, Finlay

IncrediblySadToo · 09/08/2019 11:40

I am THE worst at shortening names but my friends 13 yo Angus is still Angus. His just feels like a while other name and he’s not an ‘An’gy’ type of child.

Unless it’s something utterly obvious or ridiculous don’t stress about the ‘teasing’ kids will find something if they want to ‘tease’ a child and you simply can’t prevent all of it. In some ways your name isn’t a bad one as it’s something you were given, not something you are (short, fat, ginger etc)

Congratulations & best wishes for his birth!

StCharlotte · 09/08/2019 13:30

I only know one Angus and he's known as that bastard who cheated on his wife with his secretary, such a cliche Angus.

GoldPaperStars · 09/08/2019 15:12

Thanks everyone! Angus is now firmly back on the “yes” list. I also love Hamish and Fraser.

We’re not Scottish though... (well, DH is a quarter Scottish, but has only been there twice - I’m not sure it counts...)

StCharlotte I think I can rest easy that that’s not the most common nickname for Angus... Grin

Just tell people you really like beef 😂😂

manicinsomniac · 09/08/2019 15:39

A few years ago I had 4 Anguses in one year group at school (very weird in the South East of England!). So they were Angus, Gus, Gussie and Angy.

The only one I teach now is always Gus at home and Angus at school.

InTheHeatofLisbon · 09/08/2019 15:45

I'm quite surprised to realise I know 17 people called Angus!

None are Gus apart from one laddie I went to school with whose surname was Angus.

Lavenderblues · 09/08/2019 16:19

Why would Angus be shortened?

It's so easy to say ShockHmm

dementedma · 09/08/2019 17:40

I’m always a bit bewildered by the MN obsession with NN. DS is Joseph. Not Joe. Not Joey. Joseph. He’s 17 now and if anyone calls him Joe he just says politely “ I’m not called Joe. My name is Joseph”. You don’t have to accept a NN if you don’t want one.
Similarly I know Andrews who aren’t Andy, and James who aren’t Jim or Jamie etc. Just keep repeating the full version until people get used to it

museumum · 09/08/2019 17:46

I know adult anguses that are his but the young anguses I know are just Angus (I’m in Scotland so know a few)

Hmmmbop · 09/08/2019 19:23

I honestly hadn't realised that Gus might be short for Angus!

I know 2 Angus's, both are just Angus, not shortened. Neither are babies/ young children. I don't know any Gus's.

Moondancer73 · 09/08/2019 19:24

Not at all, we know an Angus and he's never called anything but Angus.
