Genuinely unusual (but not silly) names

Alisha779 · 08/08/2019 20:38

I would love to know any genuinely unusual / rare / uncommonly used names. Not interested in very out there things like Apple or Unicorn, but unusual yes. I loved the names Wren and Frank but both are getting far too popular! One syllable is of particular interest as we have made a double barrelled surname.

And particularly interested in views from London as each area seems to have its own trends....

Yeah I'm definitely NOT looking for Jane, Mary, Mark, Sarah, Kevin, Kate etc.

To my ears they are commonly used names, as there are many people on tv / in the media/ politicians called these names. I'm looking for unusual but not too silly or ridiculous sounding.

Damaris is a brand of lingerie
Fawn - the verb meaning puts me off
Rohan - brand of outdoor clothing

Lots of the suggestions sound very American (which may not be a problem for you OP, but is off putting for me personally)

I think the best thing is to just find a list of names you really really love first; then you can check the popularity lists etc. My eldest has a name that we thought was quite rarely used but is now popular, though with younger children. My name was rarely heard when i was a child, now there are loads of kids with it and i keep turning round in supermarkets when i hear it shouted by frazzled parents.

Damaris is a brand of lingerie

So is Freya, but it is still a wildly popular girl's name.

Interesting how few of these are one syllable names. They are hard to find.

Nye was mentioned, but it is the pet name for Aneurin, which English people can’t pronounce.
