Genuinely unusual (but not silly) names

I would love to know any genuinely unusual / rare / uncommonly used names. Not interested in very out there things like Apple or Unicorn, but unusual yes. I loved the names Wren and Frank but both are getting far too popular! One syllable is of particular interest as we have made a double barrelled surname.

And particularly interested in views from London as each area seems to have its own trends....

Not met any babies with these names in decades

If I had girl boy twins now (I won't, I'm 54) I'd call them Wolf and Wilde. I think they are really cool names!

I have a boy and a girl and they have very traditional names.

AntonsMumsTeeth: How many Annes, Johns, Lynns etc under 50 do you know?

For the new generation, those are the really stand-out, unusual names.

But your username inspires me: Anton is a good one. And Emil. And Annika. And Madita (on a roll with German/Scandi children's literature)

Myfoolishboatisleaning · 09/08/2019 06:33

There was a thread on here a while back about the name Dallas, people were being right twats, but it is lovely, it is an old Scottish name.

daisypond · 09/08/2019 06:38

A name like Wren would be seen as very naff where I live. Jane, Mary, Jean, John, Peter, Anne are all fresh and unusual these days, and are what new babies are being called. Joyce. Sheila. Daphne.

daisypond · 09/08/2019 06:58

Meant to add, I’m in London.

On what planet are Jane, Mary, Lynn and Anne unusual names?

On Planet Newborn. I know you will meet a lot of 50yo Janes, but how many baby Janes do you know?

PinkFlamingo888 · 09/08/2019 10:35

I went to school with a boy named Tadg (pronounced Tige). He was really cool and the name suited him. Not sure if it’s origin or anything but I’ve never heard of another one

BykerBykerOoh · 09/08/2019 11:10

Tadhg is an Irish name, not at all unusual in ireland but sounds really cool and original in Britain!

@stcharlotte

Op asked for genuinely unusual, and Jaybez fits that brief!

SoMuchToBits · 09/08/2019 18:23

More common spelling is Jabez though. It's a biblical name.

AntonsMumsTeeth · 09/08/2019 19:31

Yes fair point these names may not be well-known on planet newborn or with younger people today but... that doesn't make those names unusual or different which I think is what the OP was looking for.

MeMeMeYou · 09/08/2019 19:42

My son is Hugh and I haven’t met anOther. Plenty of Hugos but no Hughs

BigRedBoat · 09/08/2019 19:59

Names of your parents generation rather than grandparents - Karen, Susan, Debbie, Martin, Brian, Tony etc
