Theodore popularity....

Hello - due November and the only name OH & I love is Theodore (we will call him Theo). I’m worried this name is becoming increasingly popular - does this matter? Are there any other names similar to this that I can tempt him with?

Thank you!

I know a 3 month old Theo. I think it is getting popular again but if you like it then go for it.

Mummaofmytribe · 08/08/2019 07:05

I have a GC Theodore (Theo to most). It's a beautiful name IMO

userabcname · 08/08/2019 07:07

It doesn't matter if you love it! It is popular in my area certainly.

BlodwynBludd · 08/08/2019 07:08

When I had ds (2) on my ward of 6, 3 were called Theodore!

Panicmode1 · 08/08/2019 07:10

I have an almost 16 year old Theodore, known as Theo. When we chose it, it was well outside the top 100 names and people commented on how unusual it was. Those were the days.... Grin

Thank you for replying, can I ask which area you are in and how long ago that was?

I don't think it's becoming more popular, but it has been very popular for a few years now. I know several young ones.

derekthe1adyhamster · 08/08/2019 07:39

It's a lovely name, if you like it, go for it

PotteringAlong · 08/08/2019 07:39

Popular names are popular because they’re nice!

I know 2, both are 3

Lavenderblues · 08/08/2019 07:56

Yes, very fashionable name currently. He may well be one of several in his school, at work later in life etc. It will probably fall out of fashion at some point and start to sound dated.

Personally I'd choose another name, there are so many lovely classics outside the top 100.

Lavenderblues · 08/08/2019 07:57

Until they fall out of fashion Grin

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 08/08/2019 08:06

I love Theo, so am saying just go for it!

If you wanted similar(ish) alternatives, though:

Leo
Hugo
Rory
Cosmo

bookishtartlet · 08/08/2019 08:16

I have a Theodore, who is 4. Not hugely popular in our area, even less as I call him Teddy. I love love love his name. I don't understand people who say it will fall out of fashion, I think it's a pretty classic solid name. I hate modern boys names such as Jaxon etc though.

Cbeebiesrehab · 08/08/2019 08:19

Theodore/Theo/Teddy is the most popular boys name in my area (SW) easily. But if you like it then go for it! There is no point going for a name you like less just because it’s less popular.

ThanksItHasPockets · 08/08/2019 08:56

It isn’t becoming popular - it is popular, and has been for some time. Remember that you need to combine the Theodores (#38) with the Theos (more popular at #21). If you combine the two there were 4377 incidences last year, which puts Theo(dore) between Noah (#4) and George (#3).

Chickydoo · 08/08/2019 09:04

I have a 17 year old Theodore. It was unusual at the time 😁

Usherusherusher · 08/08/2019 09:51

I love Theodore

Thegracefuloctopus · 08/08/2019 10:11

It's very popular at the moment (seemingly to me anyway) personally I really don't like it but that's why I didnt give my child that name! Each to thier own (mn hates my DS name lol)

Cookit · 08/08/2019 10:42

To me it’s Teddy that will sound dated (I guess most of them are Edward but some Theodore). Teddy is a VERY 2010s name.

Theo I love as a name and I know a late 20s Theo (although when I met him a long time ago it was unusual!). Personally I’m a big fan of “proper” names on the BC but in the case of Theo / Theodore I’d just use Theo.

PetraRabbit · 08/08/2019 10:58

Theodore will register highly on the official top 20 list as it's often the official name of Teddy and Ted as well as Theo. I know so many babies called Teddy it is ridiculous. It will date. A lot! Theo seems to be more classic and won't date too badly although it's fairly popular. I'd stick with it if you love it. William, Oliver and Thomas are hugely popular too and are still nice classic names. I think you'll find picking any other name ending in 'o' like Leo will end up being equally popular so you won't win anything.

Lavenderblues · 08/08/2019 11:50

Anything (a name, a piece of clothing) that becomes trendy quickly will inevitably fall out of fashion and sound/look dated.

I don't know any Theos/Theodores aged 20 - 50 years. But I know a million under 18s!

Sophronia · 08/08/2019 11:51

Theo is so popular where I live. I think it’s definitely going to date.

NameChange84 · 08/08/2019 11:58

It was my favourite boys name since childhood but unfortunately it’s quite common in the NW now where I’m from. It seems to be one of the most popular names with boys born in the last 3 years. I only know one who is an all out Theodore with it not being shortened to Ted, Teddy or Theo.

itchyandscratchy1 · 08/08/2019 15:37

I'm due in 4 weeks and if we have a boy it will be Theodore (probably shortened to Teddy). I know it's popular, but I don't care! I love the name, and there's lots of popular names out there Jack, Oliver etc etc and I like all of them too! I don't want to choose a name I like less just because it's not as popular.
I don't think it will date, but it's such a versatile name that in future if our DS didn't want to be known as Teddy or Theodore, he could refer to himself and Theo or Ted!

Pinkout · 08/08/2019 16:11

It’s popular where I live and was in the city I used to live in too. Any name can become popular though, my DD’s name was rare when she was born but is increasingly becoming common now.
