Hello - due November and the only name OH & I love is Theodore (we will call him Theo). I’m worried this name is becoming increasingly popular - does this matter? Are there any other names similar to this that I can tempt him with?

Thank you!

Nice name if you don't mind popular.

I know two Theodores - One aged 8 who is just Theodore and one aged 5 who is Teddy.

Chose Theodore from a 1930's register of names list for my nearly 25yr old, only one other when he was at school.

What about the Italian Teodoro? You could still call him Theo but he can be Teo to his mates when he's a cool teen. Plus it's really easy to get a 'Teo' registration plate when he's 17!

Theo has increased in popularity from number 209 to number 38 in recent years.

That's obviously a steep increase in popularity and so the name may date more than a name that has always been in the 30s for pooularity. I know a lot of young Theos.

However, if it's the only name you like then use it. You will regret it if you don't and if you like it you won't mind if it's popular.

I have only ever met one Theo (primary school age).

Lavenderblues · 08/08/2019 20:05

If you add Theo and Theodore it would have risen even higher! It will inevitably fall out of fashion soon. In fact I'm already a bit bored of it.

I have a Benedict Theodore and he is named after my grandfather. I love the name, but whether it's a name I would have chosen had it not been a grandfathers name, I don't know. It wasn't very popular 4 years ago! I don't like Theo, I much prefer the full name.

I had a Theodore in autumn 2014 and pretty much the day after we registered the name a soap star had a Theodore known as Teddy, and it now feels like about one in three boys aged under 5 at soft plays, parks etc.... Sadly I think Theo is the new Dave.

Depends where you live, it's wall to wall Albert, Stanley and Wilfred round here. Don't know any Theodores. Nice name though Smile

It's lovely but sorry yes it's very popular know loads. Love Theo and Teddy so cute sorry not helpful.
What about Edward? 🤔

BettyCrockaShit · 09/08/2019 00:07

I'm a teacher - I've known a number of Theos (four in total), plus my younger cousin. All lovely, so if you love the name go for it!

Lavenderblues · 09/08/2019 10:35

All those saying "if you love it, use it, regardless of popularity" should consider the child's point of view as well.

There's been many threads where posters wished their parents had chosen a less common/popular name.
