Would you tell a family member that the name they are picking is ridiculous ?

I feel like it's not my place but at the same time I feel sorry for my future niece. One of my sister had a gender reveal party and announced the baby's name. They were so excited but the name is proper ridiculous. Is it my place to say something ?

Eustasiavye · 23/07/2019 19:22

I've heard worse.
I wouldn't say anything.

AquaPris · 23/07/2019 19:23

Ahah ahaha that's fucking ridiculous. Leave them to it, tell the kid they can deed poll when older.

Pieceofpurplesky · 23/07/2019 19:24

I know a Jaguar. Known as Jag. She has a good job and a degree (to those who commented on jobs) - her name has never held her back. She's a lovely person and nobody ever bullied her for her name - most peers thought it was cool

AquaPris · 23/07/2019 19:24

Is it a play on Tiger-Lilly?

anothernotherone · 23/07/2019 19:39

It's not just that it's out there or whatever - the potential sexual innuendo with any car name "Have you taken Jaguar for a spin? She's a good/ terrible ride" etc means the potential bullying won't bite til she's at secondary.

Also kitty and catty and pussy and purring and growling and so on and do on.

But some kids never attract teasing and bullying despite everything and some get bullied despite being totally ordinary. If she's the slightly vulnerable type for any reason Jaguar will put a horrible target on her back, but if she's not, she'll be fine.

Dear God, it’s dreadful Hmm. Why are people announcing their baby’s name before they’re even here these days, is it a new thing?
Maybe it’s a joke and they’ll announce the real name as James when the child actually arrives.

HeadintheiClouds · 23/07/2019 19:47

Oh Jesus, is it a girl?

PaintingOwls · 23/07/2019 19:48

HarryDaylight

I would ask why they chose that particular name. It's maybe got a special meaning for them both.

Yeah, maybe it's where their daughter was conceived Grin

PixieLumos · 23/07/2019 19:54

YABU. It’s unusual, but by no means ‘ridiculous.’

HeadintheiClouds · 23/07/2019 19:58

Oh, yes it is.

HarryDaylight · 23/07/2019 20:05

PaintingOwls Didn't the Beckhams do that with their kids?

Dead classy Grin

PaintingOwls · 23/07/2019 20:07

HarryDaylight

Yep! I remember reading about it at the time and feeling mortified on their behalf Blush

TeapotofTerror · 23/07/2019 20:07

Sounds like a gladiator!
She'll be awesome at softplay!

Gladiators Ready!!

TeapotofTerror · 23/07/2019 20:08

I know a Jet she could battle with too!

stucknoue · 23/07/2019 20:12

Ick, poor kid! Yes I would say something

MrsAJCrowley · 23/07/2019 20:13

Oddest names I’ve ever heard were a Pocahontas and a Tinkerbell... they were definitely not of native American or fairy origin!

HeadintheiClouds · 23/07/2019 20:15

She’ll be awesome at soft play!
🤦‍♀️ There are no fucking words.

OhMyGiddyAunty · 23/07/2019 20:16

One of my relations picked a terrible name for their unborn child.

My knee-jerk reaction was the thought that they were kidding, so I snorted.

They went ahead and used the name, and have never let me forget my undiplomatic reaction.

starfishcoffee · 23/07/2019 20:19

I had a male puppy named Jaguar as a child. I love the name - but not for a human. And I'm pretty liberal with names.Grin

VenusTiger · 23/07/2019 20:22

Say you prefer “BMW or Skoda” 😂

diddlediddle · 23/07/2019 21:02

They will know on some level that it is ridiculous but have decided to go ahead anyway. So if you say something all you'll achieve is alienating them really. I think they're unlikely to change their mind based on your opinion!

Colourfulest · 24/07/2019 07:45

I kinda love it actually!!!

Happyandglorious · 24/07/2019 10:56

It is bad. But they obv are looking for a totally unusual name, liked Tiger-Lily and took it one stage further...
It's nowhere near as bad as princess/royal/tiara ridiculously stupid names that make the parents and child sound... well ridiculously stupid.
Don't say anything. They will resent you.
Would love to know all the other dreadful names posters have referenced...

Shadow1234 · 24/07/2019 17:27

I would imagine you are not the only relative in the family that is secretly raising their eyebrows and trying to make sense of it.

I tend to prefer the more unusual names to traditional names, but sadly Jaguar would be a no from me.

However, it's their choice and I think it's best you say nothing.
