You do seem to have rather a bee in your bonnet about this.

You’re the one going on and on about a perfectly ordinary name being unpronounceable.

See above post by a mother of a Manon.

I dislike the look and sound of Manon. It's so unfeminine. Even pronounced the French way!

TatianaLarina · 22/07/2019 07:42

It's literally nothing to do with intelligence. It's about being able to hear (and then pronounce) sounds which are not in your native language.

You’re referring to the specific issue of a name with a sound that is hard for a nationality to produce - the French find ‘th’ difficult, the British find French and Italian ‘r’ hard. But that’s not the majority.

The mispronunciation of foreign or unusual names is generally just laziness.

It's lovely. If people aren't sure how to pronounce it it takes seconds to explain .

No, I have never managed to roll a Spanish R despite trying very hard Grin!

I know someone with a Manon from America, they pronounce it ManON.

TatianaLarina · 22/07/2019 07:56

As I said physical difficulty with making a sound is a specific issue.

The majority of mispronunciation isn’t based on a physical difficulty, simply not making an effort to learn a name and remember it.

For example, my NDN is called Lucia - Italian therefore pronounced Loo chee a. Their neighbours on the other side insist on pronouncing it Loo see a, the Spanish way, no matter how many times it’s been corrected.

As they can stay cheers and chia seeds, there’s is not a pronunciation difficulty.

It's French, are you French speaking then otherwise it's an unusual choice

NoSauce · 22/07/2019 08:05

The OP is French.

I will aways think of 'Manon des Sources' movie, starring Emmanuelle Béart. Beautiful name IMO.

pinkhousesarebest · 22/07/2019 08:20

Love this name but despite what Tatiana says, would worry about the beauty being lost in translation. There is a lightness in the French pronunciation of the last syllable that Anglo Saxons don't have.
It is also slightly dated now- most Manons that I know are teens ( in France that is) or early 20s.
But it is a beautiful name - every time I hear it I think of Emmanuelle Béart and that could only be a good thing.
