Hello! I love the name Harper, but I can't help associate it a lot with the Beckhams.. thoughts?

Yes, associated with Beckhams here too. Also, harping on about something.

Whyrmengreattiltheygottabgreat · 20/07/2019 19:15

I love it. One of my “choices”. Was a bit disappointed when the Beckhams chose it but still associate it more strongly with Harper Lee.

Butterflyball · 20/07/2019 19:24

I've got it for dd1, love it and always get comments on such a lovely name. Also dont know anyone (personally) that has it. Have always wanted the name as a huge bookworm and to kill a mockingbird is one of my faves 😊

Cherylshaw · 20/07/2019 19:24

Beautiful name

mmmmbopp · 20/07/2019 19:27

So I also associate it to Harper Lee, but tbh I hadn't thought of the name for a long time and it was only really when the Beckhams named their daughter it that it came back into my mind... I'm a bit torn!

Awful name, makes me think of 'Harpie'.

Kenworthington · 20/07/2019 19:51

I can. Also only think of the beckhams tbh

DramaAlpaca · 20/07/2019 19:58

It's a hideous name. It's just a very ordinary surname being used as a first name, and makes me think of a harpy which is not a pleasant association.

Hillaria · 20/07/2019 19:59

Beckhams. Even I know this, and I know very little about celebrities.

daisypond · 20/07/2019 20:03

It’s too associated with the Beckhams now, and before that Harper Lee. Harper is only a pen name. Her real name, by which she was known all her life, was Nelle. Harper was the surname of a doctor who helped save her sister’s life, I think.

CloserIAm2Fine · 20/07/2019 20:05

I know two one year olds called Harper, I think it’s increasing in popularity. I’m not really a fan though

Flooopers · 20/07/2019 20:10

Too Beckham-y.

Blythe
Hadley
Piper
Blair
Sloan

all have a similar preppy vibe to me

FenellaMaxwell · 20/07/2019 20:12

Harpy
Harpic
and the Beckhams.

I have a literature degree and still think of these before Harper Lee tbh

daisypond · 20/07/2019 20:13

Amazed anyone thinks the name Harper is preppy! It’s the complete opposite.

IHeartKingThistle · 20/07/2019 20:14

It doesn't work in so many accents. I'm really not sure about it and I love TKAMB too.

I'd use Jean (Louise) though!

Flooopers · 20/07/2019 20:15

Surnames as girls' first names is quite a preppy thing to do, so...

Babdoc · 20/07/2019 20:17

Your call, OP, but she will be forever known as Harpic by schoolmates.

BuildBuildings · 20/07/2019 20:19

I think surnames for first names are quite tacky. But if you love it do what you want.

daisypond · 20/07/2019 20:20

Surnames as girls' first names is quite a preppy thing to do, so... Maybe in the US. Not in the UK.

Flooopers · 20/07/2019 20:21

Preppy as a concept is American.

Obsidian77 · 20/07/2019 20:23

No, sorry. Dreadful name. I just don't like the way the word sounds.
But chances are we'll never meet and even if we did, I wouldn't comment on your child's name Wink

daisypond · 20/07/2019 20:25

Assuming the OP is in the UK, it gives off the opposite vibe. Not private school and buttoned-down shirts and aiming for elite universities.

Frith2013 · 20/07/2019 20:33

It’s a no from me.

boosterrooster · 20/07/2019 20:34

I like it. I do think of the Beckhams but would put me off the name

bigmap · 20/07/2019 20:37

Depends on your accent. It's ok if you pronounce the R at the end but not great if you pronounce it "haw-pa". (I'm not British so not sure what accent I'm doing there but hope you know what I mean)
