Rowan for a girl?

countrystumpkin · 17/07/2019 21:21

Can you help with a quick ‘poll’ of if you personally think Rowan is a girl or a boy name? Also do you like it for a girl?

Husband is unsure as he sees it as a boys name - he likes the name itself but feels that she will get lots of comments about it being a male name.

Thoughts? Thanks!

I prefer it as a name for a girl.

isitwhatitis · 18/07/2019 01:27

I know three, all boys.

SnowdropFox · 18/07/2019 06:57

Definitely a unisex name here. I know male and female of a variety of ages.

AmyMaria2 · 18/07/2019 07:52

I know 3 - all boys

I do know a Rowena though x

NeverSayFreelance · 18/07/2019 07:57

I know a few female Rowans. Perfectly nice name.

Apolloanddaphne · 18/07/2019 08:00

I know two Rowans, both female and both pronounce the name like the tree. I know a male Rohan. I think there is a distinct difference in the two names in Scotland.

BarryBarryTaylor · 18/07/2019 08:02

The only Rowan I’ve known in real life was female.
I have a strong disliking for Rowena

Drogosnextwife · 18/07/2019 08:02

I only know one Rowen and its a woman. I like it for a girl.

disappearedtothe80s · 18/07/2019 09:09

I only knew one Rowan, he was boy (although this was years ago so he is probably a man now!) Probably associate it more as a boys names to me. Rowan sort of falls in the category as Morgan.

I like it though for both girls and boys.

Good friend's daughter is Rowena, I would never say this to her face but its not a nice name. She got called Wena at primary school...

Nonnymum · 18/07/2019 09:13

I would say Rowan is a boys name, but that's because I have only known male Rowans.

Nonnymum · 18/07/2019 09:18

I do know a couple of female Rowenas though. Would your DH like that as a compromise for a girl?

bridgetreilly · 18/07/2019 11:09

It's both and it's lovely.

Teddybear45 · 18/07/2019 11:11

Rowena is the female version of Rowen.

springtimeinbognor · 18/07/2019 11:12

I've known 4 Rowans, all female. The first was my best friend when we were tiny so I've always associated it with being a girls name. I think it's a lovely name for a girl.

SnowdropFox · 18/07/2019 14:00

@Apolloanddaphne I'm in Scotland and never heard a difference in pronunciation. Could be regionally though. Also know a wee bit Rohan but he spells it that way.

Flooopers · 18/07/2019 14:05

I know two Rowans, both female and both pronounce the name like the tree.

I've heard rowan tree be pronounced two different ways.

haverhill · 18/07/2019 14:08

I love it. I associate nature names more with girls, although I like it for both sexes.

TheJoxter · 18/07/2019 14:09

I love it for both! I know two female Rowan’s and one male Rowan and it works well either way

CloserIAm2Fine · 18/07/2019 18:34

I love it for either. The only one I know is male but I first came across it as a girls name.

In the Harry Potter Hogwarts Mystery mobile game the best friend is called Rowan and they are the same gender as the player, so unisex name there! Not suggesting it’s a reference that will linger at all, not like the names of the characters in the books, just highlighting the unisex part!

daisypond · 18/07/2019 21:04

I love it for a girl. I only know female Rowans. I don’t like it for a boy at all.

keeponrunning85 · 19/07/2019 19:35

We have a DD Rowan and get lots of compliments on her name.

I've always considered it to be a girls name but a few people have said they thought it was a boy's name.

Ifancythor · 19/07/2019 19:38

I think of it as a girls name more than a boys name. It’s a nice unisex name. I have a traditionally boys name and hated it a lot , but I don’t think Rowan is traditionally one gender or the other

IsabelleSE19 · 19/07/2019 20:02

I absolutely love it for either - was on my shortlist for DS and DD. If I ever had another DC it would be top choice!

outofnothing · 19/07/2019 20:06

It's a great name for a girl but I would spell it Rohan.

Pizzaaddict · 19/07/2019 20:07

The wicker man was my first thought
