Santiago - no Hispanic/Latino connections

What do you think of the same Santiago? The baby will be half English/half Asian so could perhaps look Mediterranean/South American in complexion although that's not me trying to give justification for using it.

Do you think it's strange to use it when there's no Spanish heritage?

I think I'd be a bit surprised to find out that a boy/man called Santiago didn't have any Latin heritage.

Are you religious? Rather than calling him the equivalent of Saint James, how about just Tiago?

I think I’d assume that someone who had no Latin or Spanish heritage and had named their child Santiago was into Brooklyn Nine Nine!

I love that name. Go with it.
I know a boy named Paco, no Hispanic connection.
Such a cool name.
I mean, Sting named his son Giacomo.
Think about all the Isabellas out there who don't have any Italian/Spanish connection.
Or Anya. A very popular name now, given to kids who have no Polish or Russian connection.

Wasn't Lucky Santiago a character in a racy series by romantic novelist Jackie Collins?

That's all that came to mind! It seems nice enough and unusual. Nickname Santi is cute.

Santiago is not a 'place' name. The 'place' (city in Chile) is actually named after Saint James/Jacob /Jago.

Jago's a cool name, by the way.

I think it’s odd, really. It’s Sant Iago, so even if you get rid of the saint bit you’re left with Iago, which doesn’t have great connotations.

I too thought Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

I know of a child called Elsalvador who (as far as I know) has no Spanish/Latino connections. Confused

Do you have South Indian, Goan or Pinoy heritage? If so it should still be okay to use.

I know a Dimitri with no Russian heritage (British but with a 1/4 Iranian) and I always think it’s a bit odd.
I don’t really like Santiago and without and Latino Heritage it’s weird

@Teddybear45 He's will be half Indian (DH family originally from a western coastal state). This may sound naive but why will that make it okay?

I do really love the name and just want it to not raise too many eyebrows, and DH does like Brooklyn Nine Nine and I hadn't even made the connection Blush

Because along the south / mid-western coast of India / south India there is a significant Christian community with Spanish and Portuguese heritage - this makes using Santiago okay. I know a few Indian men called Santiago.

If the Indian side is from the Gujarat then using Persian origin names is also okay for similar reasons.

@Teddybear45 thank you so much! Yes, DH's family are Gujarati and I've never thought about using Persian names. Similarly both his parents were born in Kenya so I hadn't thought about looking for Kenyan names.
