I am obsessed with the name Rory for a girl.
DP pulled a face.
Is it worth trying to convince him or is the name terrible?
Your thoughts on the name please!!

You could use it as a nn for Aurora?

RubberTreePlant · 04/07/2019 23:59

What @Sophorina said.

Rory is a great nn for a girl, but it's a bit 'out there' so give her a formal option.

Thequaffle · 05/07/2019 00:02

Rory Gilmour?

Luckingfovely · 05/07/2019 00:04

I'm a fan of unusual names, but I do think Rory sounds really daft for a girl. Agree completely with it as a nickname as per the genius above!

diddlediddle · 05/07/2019 02:05

Love a unisex name. I have never heard of it for a girl but why not? I do think she'll (and you) will probably spend an awful lot of time explaining it though, and people mistaking her for a boy, depends if that bothers you. Rory nn for aurora is a good call otherwise.

Bluerussian · 05/07/2019 03:37

Agree with sophronia. Doesn't seem suitable for a girl but, as a nickname, it's fine.

BitOfFun · 05/07/2019 05:27

As a nickname for Aurora, yes.

My Rory Star...

Rory
IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 05/07/2019 05:31

It's definitely for a boy and don't all jump at once but I think it sounds silly when English people say it.

It's such a Scottish/Irish name for me.

Of course you could be Scottish or Irish, in which case, have a boy and you'll be fine.

Bubbletrouble43 · 05/07/2019 05:36

As pp said, Aurora is lovely and Rory is a really good shortening. DH doesnt have to use it, and when shes older she can use the name she prefers.

Queenoftheashes · 05/07/2019 05:47

Aurora / Rory is fab!

grufallosfriends · 05/07/2019 07:03

I know a girl Rory. Not sure if her full name is Aurora.

bridgetreilly · 05/07/2019 09:24

It's a boy's name, not a unisex name. Please don't use it.

Snowy81 · 05/07/2019 10:47

Agree with all pp. Aurora and Rory as a nn.

badtime · 05/07/2019 11:11

I think the Rory in the TV show (Gilmore Girls?) is called Lorelei.

BabloHoney · 05/07/2019 12:47

Nickname for Laura? (a stretch too far maybe!)

DramaAlpaca · 06/07/2019 00:31

Rory is emphatically not a girls' name, it's not even a unisex name.

It's an Irish male name meaning 'red king' and it sounds absolutely ridiculous on a girl.

SemperIdem · 06/07/2019 00:33

I wouldn’t use it for a girl.

Rory Gilmore was indeed Lorelei as a pp has said. I always thought it odd her mother named her after herself Confused

grufallosfriends · 06/07/2019 07:46

It's a natural shortening for Aurora.

Sittinonthefloor · 06/07/2019 07:48

Rory is a great name - for a boy. It’s like calling a girl Richard or Thomas.

neighbourhoodwitch · 06/07/2019 07:49

Love it but what about Romy?

AverageMummy · 06/07/2019 09:27

I wouldn’t sorry. My suggestion would be Victoria as a full name with Rory NN but here’s a few that could work:

Aurora
Lorelei
Dorothy
Victoria
Mallory
Romilly

Whoops75 · 06/07/2019 09:30

It’s a boys name.

Ok as a nn
I loved it too after watching Gilmore girls but it doesn’t work in real life.

Sorry op

nevernotstruggling · 06/07/2019 09:31

Isn't it short for Lorelei in GG?

beanaseireann · 06/07/2019 09:40

John F Kennedy ( former POTUS who was assassinated ) had a niece called Rory.
She was the daughter of Robert Kennedy ( also assassinated ) the former Attorney General of US.
I love the name, but for a boy not a girl.

Twelve8Ts · 06/07/2019 10:47

I’ve seen in become more popular as a suggestion for a girl, you’re definitely not the first to suggest it on here! Short for Aurora is lovely.
