I’m doubting our boys choice now...

Gabriel James...

A friend asked me and DH earlier if we had a name in mind or if we were still looking, I said no we have finally agreed on a name but it’s a secret. DH promptly responded with “Ive had to massively comprise, it wasn’t my first choice” which has really taken me back. It’s making me doubt the name now. Incidentally it wasn’t my first choice either, but like I say we couldn’t agree.

DH and I haven’t had chance to chat about it as we have family and friends over this evening and I don’t want them knowing our choices, but I’ve been silently mulling it over all evening and now I’m not sure if I even like the name anymore.

We wanted a boys name that was sensible for a baby, boy, man, but also uncommon. (There were only 4 Gabriel’s registered in our borough last year according to the ons website)

Has anyone else got some good names suggestions, happy to go along the biblical route as they seem very ‘classic’

We have lots of grandad names near us, lots of Arthur’s, Alberts, George, Henry/Harry, Max, Olivier...so want to avoid those.

Also James as a mn is set in stone as it’s a family name.

Any suggestions welcome, this whole naming lark is giving me real anxiety now.

Could Patrick -> Appie work?
If so I would definitely go for that!

How about Jonah? My ds's name, not met another and it's not too out there either.

BarryBarryTaylor · 16/06/2019 22:29

Does Jonah not get shorted to Joe? We already have three Joe’s in the family!

Hudson James

BikeRunSki · 16/06/2019 22:31

Gabriel James is a superb name. Gabriel would have been DD’s boys name.

BarryBarryTaylor · 16/06/2019 22:31

Sorry don’t like Hudson

Not once has it been shortened to Joe. Lots of people seem to have forgotten about it as a name!

BikeRunSki · 16/06/2019 22:32

My nephew Jonah gets shortened to Jones

Bessica1970 · 16/06/2019 22:35

My nephew is Elijah, which is biblical.

Elijah James?

Albin or Abel for Appie ?

AverageMummy · 16/06/2019 22:40

Aubrey !! I love this name & he could easily get away with Appie. Beautiful name & only 38 U.K. wide.

TheLoneWolfDies · 16/06/2019 22:40

I honestly can't get past the whole Appie thing... It's just so random.

Appie is terrible. What is he thinking!!?

I really like Nate too so I'm sorry you can't go with that.

Gabriel is nice though, we've only known 2 as a family, both nice children and both have gone by nn Gabe.

I think in your position stick to the compromise, you can't give the name Appie. It isn't a name and if it was a nickname it sounds like a nickname for an unusual girls name. I am sure Gabriel/Gabe will grow on you in time.

NameChange30 · 16/06/2019 22:42

Please could you tell us your DD's name and the top 5 boy's names that each of you likes?

I'm sure we can suggest some names but it would be a lot easier if we had some clues!

Bedforaweek · 16/06/2019 22:43

Gabriel is beautiful

ILikePaperHats · 16/06/2019 22:47

My son is called Jonah and it hasn't been shortened by anyone yet!

RealButterOnly · 16/06/2019 22:49

Oh I love Jones as the nn to Jonah!

AverageMummy · 16/06/2019 22:51

Patrick / Appie could easily work - actually it doesn’t feel a stretch to me at all

Scotstar · 16/06/2019 22:53

Another one suggesting Andrew!

BertrandRussell · 16/06/2019 22:54

Patrick is a fantastic name. I have one - and he goes by a range of shortenings as well as the whole thing. You can try and make Appie stick- but in my experience they decide what they want to be called for themselves.

AverageMummy · 16/06/2019 22:56

@BertrandRussell yes but by the time the child is old enough to decide their own nicknames it’ll be too late for her husband Grin

BertrandRussell · 16/06/2019 23:01

Good point! Our Patrick haD a cutesy shortening I loved which he rejected firmly when he was 3.

NameChange30 · 16/06/2019 23:02

Here is my list of Biblical names FWIW, but it's a shot in the dark without more idea of your tastes... (I'm not a fan of Gabriel or Patrick so my taste is probably different.)

Abe (for Abel or Abraham)
Amos
Asa
Caleb
Elijah
Ezra
Jesse
Joel
Jonah
Isa
Levi
Saul
Seth
Simeon
Toby (Tobias)
Zeke (Ezekiel)

I also like Ivo which is not Biblical and which I suspect your husband would rule out for being "posh" (based on the other names he's ruled out for that reason).

I suggest that you start over with the shortlist. Each write a list (separately) of ~10 names. Then compare lists, you can each veto names from the other's list but not all of them!! Then try and whittle it down to about 3 names for the shortlist. I would suggest that you don't pick just one. You might find that your favourite name changes, one might grow on you, and you might also find that one "feels right" after your son is born.

Good luck.
