I’m doubting our boys choice now...

Gabriel James...

A friend asked me and DH earlier if we had a name in mind or if we were still looking, I said no we have finally agreed on a name but it’s a secret. DH promptly responded with “Ive had to massively comprise, it wasn’t my first choice” which has really taken me back. It’s making me doubt the name now. Incidentally it wasn’t my first choice either, but like I say we couldn’t agree.

DH and I haven’t had chance to chat about it as we have family and friends over this evening and I don’t want them knowing our choices, but I’ve been silently mulling it over all evening and now I’m not sure if I even like the name anymore.

We wanted a boys name that was sensible for a baby, boy, man, but also uncommon. (There were only 4 Gabriel’s registered in our borough last year according to the ons website)

Has anyone else got some good names suggestions, happy to go along the biblical route as they seem very ‘classic’

We have lots of grandad names near us, lots of Arthur’s, Alberts, George, Henry/Harry, Max, Olivier...so want to avoid those.

Also James as a mn is set in stone as it’s a family name.

Any suggestions welcome, this whole naming lark is giving me real anxiety now.

Doesn't help you but I really like Nate

Never heard of Appie, makes me think of an app on my phone Blush

Joshua James is lovely what about Oakley?

LoveB · 16/06/2019 22:10

Agree with pp, Alexander James is a lovely name and I don't think too common at the moment.

I wouldn't want to use a name choice if my DH had said that about it either.

BarryBarryTaylor · 16/06/2019 22:12

I have no idea where he got Appie from.

I’m too picky also I think as none of the above name suggestions are grabbing me.

I definitely don’t love Gabriel, but I was so relieved that we had finally both seemed to agree on a name.
Back to the drawing board I think. I could actually cry right now from the stress of picking a name. We only have a couple of weeks left and it’s giving me such a headache. Sad

Nathaniel is lovely but what on earth is appie?!?!

I love Gabriel

Tsaminaminazangalewa · 16/06/2019 22:13

Gabriel is my favourite boys name ever and it goes well with James. However if you’re not convinced then that’s no good. I also love Nathan/Nate.

How about:
Raphael
Felix
Luke
Miles
Milo
Asa
Marcus
Elias
Ezra
Amos
Gideon

BertrandRussell · 16/06/2019 22:13

Appie? Where did that come from?

AverageMummy · 16/06/2019 22:14

If it helps your husband: Nathaniel is given to 0.07% of babies & Nate to 0.02%

BertrandRussell · 16/06/2019 22:14

Isa James?

MadeForThis · 16/06/2019 22:15

How about Nathan?

MadeForThis · 16/06/2019 22:16

Or Arlen

BarryBarryTaylor · 16/06/2019 22:16

Christ knows average

I’m astounded actually how different our tastes are. Aside from Gabriel he hasn’t liked any of my suggestions, so I just jumped when he said yes ok, but a week on, he clearly isn’t so keen, and to be honest neither am I.

This didn’t happen with DD!!

Because I work with children I know so many Alex’s, Isaac, Joshua, Max, Oliver, Adam, I just don’t feel like I could use them as they are other children’s names. (Children my DS will be around on a regular basis)

Amos is a good call. Or Asher? Biblical but sounds modern if that's what he's after. Appie? What the actual...

Letthemysterybe · 16/06/2019 22:19

What about....

Rafe
Ambrose
Hamish
Nash
Angus
Drew
Daniel

barbiedreamhouse · 16/06/2019 22:19

Ivor
Ivan
Isaiah
Abraham
Elijah
Emmett
Roman
Xander

AverageMummy · 16/06/2019 22:19

This is bound to be a real marmite name.....but there were 17 boys named Apollo in the whole country - & he could use Appie. Apollo James sounds quite cool to me.

BarryBarryTaylor · 16/06/2019 22:20

I like Asher. I do like Amos too actually. Although I really want to say Amos Diggory Blush

I like Isa very interesting, not at all ‘regular’

Hmm I've just googled and the only Appie I found was the nn of a Dutch footballer who suffered a brain injury, forcing him to stop playing 😮

BarryBarryTaylor · 16/06/2019 22:21

Again I like Ivan, Ivor, Rafe...these were all on my list which was swiftly rejected as they sound too posh apparently

Yes tilly he played for Ajax...my husband is a big sporting fan

Disfordarkchocolate · 16/06/2019 22:22

Ira is lovely too and not used much.

BarryBarryTaylor · 16/06/2019 22:23

And I believe Appie wasn’t he real name, he was a Muslim football player and Appie was his nn.

As a nn I would happily go along with it, providing baby had an actual proper name that made sense to be shorted to Appie.

Unfortunately I don’t like Apollo but that would have been ideal

AverageMummy · 16/06/2019 22:24

Appie for Patrick? Fairly unusual now & well outside the top 100?

DontCallMeShitley · 16/06/2019 22:25

I like Jonathan.
Or Christopher.

barbiedreamhouse · 16/06/2019 22:25

Ethan
Brandon
Bryson
Bobby
Caleb
Remy
Caelon
Coby
Levi
Ernie
Dawson
Huxley
Gunner

I feel your pain - my husband was an absolute pain in the a* when it came to naming our first. I’m fairly early in this pregnancy but you know it is just SO much easier when you just decide you’re the one playing hard ball. You choose the name you love & get him to come up with alternatives you’ll agree to. Why should we do all the work? And he hates my first choice so all of a sudden so many names he rejected out of hand first time round he’s now putting forward Grin
