Thank you so much for all the replies folks ... Can I ask do you think a name has to "sit right" with siblings? If I tell you her sisters are Josie and Hallé does that make any difference?

Pippa still sounds vulgar and cruel to me.

Nell is nice but still feels a bit incomplete.

And Ida is still lovely.

Are there other names on your list? Or are you sure that it's one of these 3?

rabbitheadlights · 10/06/2019 12:02

@maimainomai ... I have a fair few but didn't want to ask too much my other options are Erica and Estelle (with a view to using Essie)

Estelle is beautiful! Very pretty and classy.

But why would you shorten (ruin) it to Essie?

maimainomai · 10/06/2019 12:09

My opinion:

  1. Erica and Ida are both great. Erica does however get bonus points for the great nicknames and the lovely flowers....
  1. Estelle: not my cup of tea but nice.
  1. It's OK/inoffensive. (I do however really dislike the nickname Nelly.)
  1. Pippa: huge no imo. I do however have a soft spot for Pepper (for some reason). We received a birth announcement for a little Pepper a few weeks ago and I must admit, I do find it charming. 🤷🏻‍♀️

So my gran was Nell, DP picked Ida, I liked Pippa until I discovered the facts about it, my DD 13 chose Erica and I chose Estelle I don't know why I would want to "ruin" It I just like the sound of Essie for a youngster obviously Estelle as she matures

I’m not a fan of nns as first names, but for me Nell is fine, I really like it. I know a very cool Nell. It’s her christened name and she never gets called Nelly.

Cyberworrier · 10/06/2019 12:31

I think Essie is very sweet and like Estelle too, but I think Essie and Josie area bit too similar in my opinion..but some people like sort of matching names? I’m intrigued as to what nicknames there are for Erica?! (I’m enjoying the idea of Eric as a nn for a little girl but obviously not really!).
Ps re Ida pronunciation, I think the Eeda pronunciation sounds more similar to Eva ... so to me sounds like an interesting alternative to the very popular Eva or Ava. I love Eye-da pronunciation, partly because of family association I guess.

rabbitheadlights · 10/06/2019 13:01

I believe "Ricky" is the short for Erica @cyberworrier I also prefer eye-dah

Rickie is cute. Ery, Riri, Rica etc would probably work as well.

Essie is a sweet nickname imo.

rabbitheadlights · 10/06/2019 13:07

Sorry NN not short

OP posts:
sunnyshines · 10/06/2019 13:11

Ricky sounds like an American male teen.

Bluerussian · 10/06/2019 13:12

Nell but it is short for Ellen, Helen or Eleanor. Use the full name and abbreviate, it's friendly that way.

Ida is hopelessly old fashioned.

Pippa, again, is a diminutive of Philippa so if you fancy Pippa, have Philippa on birth certificate. Philippa's are often called, "Phil", which is also nice.

FizzyGreenWater · 10/06/2019 13:13

How about Aster?

MollyHuaCha · 10/06/2019 13:35

Ida (Eee-da)

Lavenderblues · 10/06/2019 13:57

I like Estelle (but please not Essie!) and Ida (Eeda). How about Isadora nickname Ida?

Pinkvoid · 10/06/2019 14:31

Ida.

RuthW · 10/06/2019 18:00

Ida. The others are shortened versions of full names.

LegoPiecesEverywhere · 10/06/2019 19:00

Ida

Owlbert · 10/06/2019 21:48

I prefer Estelle and Erica but Ida is ok

rachelgrace · 11/06/2019 20:55

I like Nell. I actually used to know two (despite it being quite an unusual name) and it suited them well.
I also think Pippa is very cute but I would probably use it as a shortened version of Philippa or something.
I prefer Nell and Pippa to Ida.
