Girls name - help!

HeavyDeuty · 08/06/2019 11:09

We are expecting a baby any day and do not know the gender. We feel a bit more certain about boys' names, which has surprised us, but could do with your help for girls' names.

We would like our child to have a name that is known, but not used frequently (so certainly something that is not in the top 100, but ideally as far outside of that as possible) and ideally something with good shortening potential. Names we like include Hermione (but mildly concerned about Harry Potter references) and Beatrix (but if you put the data together with that for Beatrice it ranks about 68th in 2017).

If we like these two names, what else might we like? Thanks for your help and ideas! Smile

What about Dulcie? Feels quite modern & fresh but only a handful of them a year. 0.01% of babies so should be safe!

Other rare names:
Vivienne
Juliet
Cecilia
Sylvia
Camille
Persephone
Jemima

I'd go with hermione, I only know one 3yo hermione she is lovely and her parents have never met or heard of another. I've taught for 8 years and not had any in our school/preschool. Beatrix is becoming slightly more popular on the forums and I've met two baby Beatrix' in the past 6 months.

Thanks for your replies, you guys are good!

I like Jemima, but not sure about the shortening 'Jem', which would be unavoidable at times I'm sure. Otherwise I like Cecilia, Persephone and Ophelia (but are those two a little try hard?), Genevieve (though not into the shortenings), Theodora (but DP says no Sad). Winifred nn Freddy is inspired (and I really like the unisex nickname), but just not sure about Winifred as a whole name...

Hermione is a bit too 'Harry Potter' for me and I'd be spending my life explaining that she wasn't named after the one in the book.

Beatrix is nice. Is it likely to be confused spelling-wise with Beatrice/Beatriz?

We went through the same thought process as you with DD1. I wanted something where people had heard of the name & could spell it; but didn't already know 7 other kids with the same name. She's Claudia.

userabcname · 09/06/2019 06:11

Hermione is beautiful- love! I think Beatrix/ Beatrice is quite popular now. I also love the suggestions of Persephone and Vivienne. There's also Antigone and Giselle which I think have a similar kind of vibe.

HeavyDeuty · 09/06/2019 10:15

I love the nn Bertie! Not as keen on Alberta / Roberta, but figured it could be used for Beatrix, at a push! Also quite like Frederica nn Freddie, but DH doesn't sadly. Claudia is lovely too, but I have a good friend with the name..
Also wondered about Artemis, nn Art/Artie - what do you think? Love Florence, but it just seems too popular at the moment.
