Awful old lady or sassy & cute?

Thank you so much for all the comments on my other post. It’s helped me narrow down to Rosa, Louisa & Juliet. Rosa is possibly my favourite at the moment but I am slightly put off by all the Rose / Rosie / Isla-Rose etc. which when combined is several thousand ‘Rose’ types (I wouldn’t mind the popularity if all one name like Olivia for example).

However, a name I keep being drawn to & then going off again is Dorothy. Not hugely keen on Dot & Dolly so would use in full (appreciating kids do what they like when a little older).

Would love to know what you think?!

MN is obsessed with the name Rosa. It doesn't do anything for me.

Louisa is okay.

Juliet is by far the nicest.

Penny4Thoughts · 06/06/2019 20:47

@Quintella oh that’s interesting I’ve only read a handful of posts recently

Dorothy is not an improvement on your lovely shortlist!

It was the name of both my (wonderful) grandmothers, born 1905 and 1915, and very much labelled them of their era. Personally I much prefer timeless names which don’t lurch in and out of fashion once a century or so.

SpangledBoots · 06/06/2019 21:19

I love Rosa!

Louisa is also nice.

Dorothy sounds a bit contrived to me unless you're naming after a relative. Dot for short is quite sweet though.

Sessy19 · 06/06/2019 21:23

You could use Dory for a nn

I think Rosa is a bit dull, but I do like the edge of Dorothy. I’m more inclined to off-beat or less obvious names, particularly for girls, though....

DramaAlpaca · 06/06/2019 23:51

I love Dorothy, it's fab.

I also love Rosa, Louisa & Juliet.

I don't like Thea though, I think it's weak & lispy.

Emmapeeler · 06/06/2019 23:54

Every Dorothy I have ever met was called Dot. Usually forces to be reckoned with.

Personally I would choose Rose, Juliet then Louisa. All lovely.

Jossina · 07/06/2019 00:00

I like Dorothy. I know a 5 year old called Dorothy or sometimes Doro and she's charming.

Rosa reminds me too much of the duck in Armand Gamache books.

FuckMNDoubleStandards · 07/06/2019 01:00

Am I the only one who doesn't like either names? Sorry OP, I think both names are terrible Blush

FurrySlipperBoots · 07/06/2019 01:26

Dorothea, Thea for short, is much nicer than Dorothy. Rosa is nice.

Trinnidad · 07/06/2019 07:51

My sister is Dorothy after our grandmother - she either uses it in full or is known as Dot. I also know a Dorothy known as Dorrie at uni. Not an 'old lady' name at all - a Great name, just sadly rarely used. Go for it!

bruffin · 07/06/2019 07:57

My nan was Dorothy, she was known as Dolly or Doll, but i really like Thea

Penny4Thoughts · 07/06/2019 09:46

Yes @FuckMNDoubleStandards just you so far - I’m intrigued by your user name ???

OP posts:
FuckMNDoubleStandards · 07/06/2019 10:35

@Penny4Thoughts It seems Rosa is very popular on MN, I've never met one in real life. I do prefer Rose, I think it sounds nicer. Out of the names you have suggested I like Juliet, I think it's a pretty name. Of course these are all my own opinions. I'm sure whatever you choose will suit your little one perfectly.

In regards to my username, I don't like the MN double standards that are often displayed here. I'm sure you may have seen it yourself. I don't wish to derail your thread, if you would like to know more, feel free to PM me. Although it's just what it says, nothing more to it really.

Norwayswedeniceland · 07/06/2019 11:27

I absolutely love Dorothy

Norwayswedeniceland · 07/06/2019 11:29

I don’t like Rosa but Rose is ok.
Louisa is nice.
But I’d without a doubt go for Dorothy if I were you

AuntGertrude · 07/06/2019 20:33

Go for Dorothy, without question.

Can shorten to Dorry, Dory, Doro, or Thea.

Rosa is over-used all over the place.
Louisa is okay, and due for a return too.

Elmo303 · 07/06/2019 22:52

Not massively keen on Rosa but I think Rose is stunning. Strong, elegant and classic.

Not keen on Louisa, but quite like Juliet, very pretty.
I think Dorothy comes across as a really “cool” name as it’s becoming more popular with the rise of granny chic names but for some reason it doesn’t strike me as a beautiful name if you see what I mean.

I would pick Rose, but otherwise it would be Juliet over Rosa. Good luck choosing Smile

Penny4Thoughts · 07/06/2019 23:00

@Elmo303 I keep coming back to Juliet also

OP posts:
Elmo303 · 07/06/2019 23:30

Juliet is really pretty and feminine but sounds strong at the same time, plus it feels unusual without being too out there.
I don’t think you’d regret it, but then you do seem very keen on Rosa, having named three kids I will say you definitely need to go with your heart and gut instinct rather than what you think you “should” like.
I remember having several names I couldn’t choose between and just asked myself, if it didn’t matter what anyone else in the world thought which name would I pick. Makes you realise just how much other people influence your decision sometimes!

Penny4Thoughts · 08/06/2019 07:56

@Elmo303 so true !

BarrenFieldofFucks · 08/06/2019 09:14

Rosa is lovely, as is rose. I don't know any kids with them as first names

Thea also nice, and I like Dottie too

GrannyHaddock · 08/06/2019 10:02

You could turn it round; Theadora.

IdblowJonSnow · 08/06/2019 10:08

I like all of them op. Rosa is the nicest.
My grandma was a Dorothy, she would be almost 100 if still alive! She was known as Dot.

SherlockSays · 08/06/2019 10:10

@Bluntness100 my DD is called Thea Rose Grin
