Awful old lady or sassy & cute?

Thank you so much for all the comments on my other post. It’s helped me narrow down to Rosa, Louisa & Juliet. Rosa is possibly my favourite at the moment but I am slightly put off by all the Rose / Rosie / Isla-Rose etc. which when combined is several thousand ‘Rose’ types (I wouldn’t mind the popularity if all one name like Olivia for example).

However, a name I keep being drawn to & then going off again is Dorothy. Not hugely keen on Dot & Dolly so would use in full (appreciating kids do what they like when a little older).

Would love to know what you think?!

I love Dorothy. My great aunt had 3 old lady names and she hated all of them, but I always thought Dorothy was really pretty.

ZiggyB · 06/06/2019 12:15

I like Rosa and Thea but not Dorothy sorry

TatianaLarina · 06/06/2019 12:27

Dorothy is godawful frumpsville.

Much prefer Rosa and Louisa. Don’t like Juliet but it’s miles better than Dorothy.

TatianaLarina · 06/06/2019 12:27

I like Italian version - Giulia and Giuliana.

monsieurmarius · 06/06/2019 12:38

Rosa, Louisa and Juliet are all beautiful, strong names. Sorry I really don't like Dorothy but Dottie is better!

BoomZahramay · 06/06/2019 12:56

Dorothy is old lady to me, I'm afraid.

Rosa and Juliet are stunning.

Lots of little girls have Rose as a middle name, but you never hear middles names, so don't see it as an issue. Rosa as a first name isn't that popular.

Astronica · 06/06/2019 13:30

Dorothy is transitioning from old lady to cute and sassy I think, but you'll get people who see it each way. I love Juliet and Louisa. Although Louise is dated I find Louisa very fresh. Quite a different feel than Louise for me. I like Rose, but can't get excited about the other Rose versions.

moggle · 06/06/2019 13:34

I like Dorothy. I’m not sure it would necessarily get shortened (before school at least...) because it’s quite easy to say. My daughter has a friend called Dotty which is very cute and suits her so well (wasn’t sure if Dolly in your post was a typo for Dotty or not). Dora or Dorrie are other natural options IMO if you wanted to guide people away from Dot/ty in the future.
I have 3 young kids and haven’t met a Rosa so I think she wouldn’t be “lumped” in as a x-rose.
Louisa is ok, not my favourite; just so similar to Louise which is a perfectly nice name but as a child of the 80s I know hundreds of them!

BlueMerchant · 06/06/2019 13:41

I think Dorothy is going to be popular.
Want to say I hate it but actually I don't.

TigerBreadIsNice · 06/06/2019 13:42

Dorothy is very old lady.

It's in with Edna, Gladys, Hilda and Ethel.

Please don't.

Rosa is lovely. Fresh. The problem is just because Rose is just one of those filler middle names, but you would be using Rosa which is different, as a first name.

Lllot5 · 06/06/2019 13:52

I like Dorothy. But wizard of oz is my favourite book so I’m biased.
Someone somewhere will think of a nickname they always do.
I really like it actually the more I think of it the more I like it.

Marty93 · 06/06/2019 14:04

Oh, I love Dorothy. My Nana was a Dorothy and we all knew her as Nana Dot. But it is such a lovely name and can be Dottie/Dolly/Dory.

Rosa is also lovely.

gilesh715 · 06/06/2019 15:34

I like Rosa, prefer Eloise to Louisa but still nice. Lots of people comment that I have a pretty name. I like Juliet as a middle name.

Don't really like Dorothy but could be cute for a middle name x

ScrambledSmegs · 06/06/2019 15:39

I used to know a Dorothea, known as Dora. She was in her 90s when I knew her and completely, awesomely chic and very funny.

So that's a yes from me Smile

Justtheoneplease · 06/06/2019 15:40

Dorothy makes me think of 'Dorothy Perkins' nn Dottie P, so sorry not keen. However love love love Thea, really pretty and yet strong. Rosa is a bit boring if I'm honest 😯

TheWaiting · 06/06/2019 16:51

I love Dorothy. The one I know is 10yrs and is known as Dorrie which I love and think is much nicer than, Dotty.

I also like Audrey which I think is similar.

Rosa is meh to me as Rose is sooo common especially as a middle name.

OhhMyLittleGirls · 06/06/2019 17:18

LOVE Rosa, Louisa and Juliet, Dorothy I'm not too keen...sounds a bit old-ladyish to me x

MyInnerAlto · 06/06/2019 17:27

IIWY I would call her Rosa Dorothy.

AudacityOfHope · 06/06/2019 17:29

I love Louisa and Juliet. Dorothy is very drab compared to those! Rosa is lovely too, but there are so many various uses of Rose now, you're right.

Eloise? Always loved that but would have been shocking with my surname.

Shadow1234 · 06/06/2019 17:44

Rosa is a beautiful name - short and elegant
My aunt was a Dorothy known as Dot (which I think sounds awful - not keen on Dottie either)
Lottie is a nice nn if you were to go for Charlotte (but I know that isn't on your list).

Penny4Thoughts · 06/06/2019 17:53

@Audacityofhope can’t use Eloise which is a shame as it’s lovely

I know a toddler Dorothy, she is an epic tot, and I don't think it's an odd name.

Rainbowknickers · 06/06/2019 18:44

Louisa is my daughters middle name she’s named after my grandmother
Rosa is gorgeous and she’ll be named after Rosa banks
Dorothy is awful (sorry) I’ve known loads and all are bitchy middle aged women
Thea is really pretty

RuthW · 06/06/2019 19:20

Dorothy is lovely. It's starting to get quite popular now.

deleteandrewind · 06/06/2019 19:33

You have similar taste to me.

Rosa and Juliet have both been on my name lists. Louisa is also very pretty.

I quite like Dorothy but it definitely isn't a favourite. I suspect it will grow in popularity like quite a few other 'Granny' sort of names.
