Just wondering if we think these names are usable again. Eric already seems to be back in. I don't think any of these are inherently horrible words (except maybe Derek!)? What do we think - are any ok?

Neil
Alan
Keith
Ian
Martin
Malcolm
Trevor
Clive
Derek
Paul
Brian
Graham
Barry
Kenneth
Glen
Philip
Nigel
Colin
Terence
Kevin

Colin is pretty timeless imo, thanks mainly to the lovely Firth.

Poppyfields21 · 31/05/2019 07:56

I agree that Philip isn’t for this list, it’s a classic name

Watersnail · 31/05/2019 08:55

Eric is great. I also like Neil, Brian, Philip, Colin.

lumpy76 · 31/05/2019 08:58

I have a nearly 13yr old Dennis. He was named after his paternal grandfather....By DH whilst I was still high of gas and air! However, it suits him down to the ground...he's a bit of a grumpy old man and like to live in pjs 🤣

TurquoiseAndPurple · 31/05/2019 08:59

I really hope not.

ReganSomerset · 31/05/2019 09:00

I really like Hugh and Colin, but Colin means young and I'm superstitious so wouldn't use it.

Mnbb · 31/05/2019 09:01

To th pp who listed 30/40s names. They are back. The ones with a + next to them are kids in my kids’ London primary School.

**I think some of the names from the 30s/40s will have to come back first, like...

Frank+
Leonard
Sidney+
Ivan
Ernest+
Ralph+
Morris
Hugh+
Gilbert+
Robin+
Dennis
Arnold
Percy
Walter+
Ivor+
Raymond
Alec
Lawrence+
Edwin
Edgar**

I got talking to a German woman on holiday a few years ago and she said English boys names are becoming popular there, I asked her which ones and she said Kevin and Derek !!

anothernotherone · 31/05/2019 09:05

Paul and Phillip are massively popular where I live, but I'm abroad. My 11 year old has 3 Pauls and a Phillip in his class, and there's one Paul and one Philip in my 8 year old's class! Most boys under 12 are called variants of Luca/ Luka / Lucas / Lukas or though... with those whose parents prefer something fancier being called Raphael or Fabian... Boys over 12 are generally called Alexander. Girls are mostly a variant of Alyssa, Alisa, Alissa...

SophyStantonLacy · 31/05/2019 09:07

I know babies Ian, Mike and Tony.

Watersnail · 31/05/2019 09:08

Not sure all of these are due to make a comeback, but...

Violetparis I live in Germany. Germans don't get away with Kevin - it "labels" the barer not as English/ American/ Irish but as East German, which obviously shouldn't carry stigma, but does. There's a nasty but very prevalent saying that Kevin isn't a name, it's a diagnosis!

That's exactly why people need to be able to ask how names are perceived and receive an honest answer before deciding whether to use them regardless!

namechangefornames · 31/05/2019 09:15

I have a 3 year old son named John (not on any of these lists), we named him after his grandfather. Haven't met another one yet, but have met a Jonathan.

justchecking1 · 31/05/2019 09:18

I know a 9 year old Jonathan. It's not on your list but it's of the same ilk. I really don't like it

HouseName · 31/05/2019 10:32

I don't think Paul, Martin and Philip (more often Filip now) ever completely went away

Filip isn't a name in English.

goldensugar2 · 31/05/2019 10:40

I really like Jonathan. Strong classic name.

MikeUniformMike · 31/05/2019 12:12

Neil - like
Alan - like
Keith - no
Ian - not ready for a revival
Martin - ok
Malcolm - ok
Trevor - ok
Clive - ok
Derek - no
Paul - yes
Brian - maybe
Graham - no, the less pleasant Grayson seems more likely
Barry - no
Kenneth - yes
Glen - no
Philip - yes
Nigel - yes
Colin - maybe
Terence - maybe
Kevin - no

Cookit · 31/05/2019 12:24

Not all names come back and sorry to cause offence to people with these names but the names from that era that I really hope die a death are Keith, Kevin, Clive etc. Gary is about 10 years later I think and I hope that doesn’t come back in 30 years.

CakeRattleandRoll · 31/05/2019 14:31

I like Martin, Colin, Paul and Malcolm.
We had Stephen on our short list for DS (6).

MummyBear2352 · 31/05/2019 15:18

Yes, the others....no.

Pinkvoid · 31/05/2019 16:03

Not at all.

There was a Malcolm and a Travis in my DC’s old school which surprised me... Just makes me picture old men.

Paul was used by a Towie person I think. Again, I picture a middle aged man.

foxtiger · 31/05/2019 17:08

Although none of them are particularly popular at the moment, I think Paul, Philip and Martin are essentially timeless, while the others have shorter histories in England and seem to me to me more specifically tied to a generation or two. I personally quite like Ian and wouldn't rule out giving it to a child, if I was having children now.

MontanaSkies · 31/05/2019 17:17

I actually think Ian has quite a contemporary feel to it, so it wouldn't surprise me if it made a comeback. Vowel names are popular at the moment, plus it reminds me of Scandi-sounding names like Jan (pronounced Yan) and cool Welsh names like Ianto.

twattymctwatterson · 31/05/2019 17:22

What are the female equivalents? I went to school with:
Angela
Karen
Lorraine
Sharon
Lisa
Danielle
Amanda
Debra
Julie-Anne
Donna
Alison
Laura

God they all seem so dated now (and I'm one of them)

twattymctwatterson · 31/05/2019 17:25

I was born in late 70s early 80s btw
