Fleur or Fflur?

So we like the name Fleur and it has family meaning but DH has Welsh roots and would like something that links with that so we are considering Fflur (fl-eer). Our surname also begins with F and is a two syllable name.

Just wondered what people thought and if outside of Wales where we are it might just be regarded as a weird way of spelling Fleur if we went for Fflur

I love Fleur.

Sexnotgender · 25/05/2019 15:57

Fflur looks like a spelling mistake to my eyes.

Fleur is lovely.

BuffaloCauliflower · 25/05/2019 15:58

I don’t like Fleur, sounds like bringing phlegm up when you’re ill. I love it when people use traditional and cultural names, and with non-Anglicised spellings, but I fear you’d be setting her up for a life time of pain and irritation having to explain Fflur wherever she goes

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 25/05/2019 15:58

So sorry but initially I thought Fflur was a joke, if you are not Welsh I think you'd be opening yourself up to ridicule.

Coquillage · 25/05/2019 16:00

I've never come across the name Fflur before but I have to say it doesn't look very appealing. Stick with Fleur and giver her a Welsh middle name instead.

DelphiniumBlue · 25/05/2019 16:00

But is Fflur the actual Welsh spelling? I suspect it's a spelling made up to look Welsh. Apologies if I'm wrong.

SometimesItRains · 25/05/2019 16:01

As a non-welsh person fflur just looks like a spelling mistake and doesn’t sound very nice to my ears. If you live in Wales then no problem, but elsewhere then she’s likely to have to explain it to every new person.
Fleur is much nicer.

li1972 · 25/05/2019 16:01

I'm welsh (as in, actually speak it), and have never heard the name Fflur. I'm afraid I would assume you has misspelled Fleur... sorry OP!

Ikeameatballs · 25/05/2019 16:04

I don’t like Fleur but I really, really don’t like Fflur!

Littleduckeggblue · 25/05/2019 16:07

I thought Fflur was a typo.

ThinkWittyThoughts · 25/05/2019 16:11

I was also expecting Fflur to be ... well, I'm surprised it's serious.

I'm half Welsh.

What about Ffleur?

Ces6 · 25/05/2019 16:12

Surely Fleur is a French name? I don't know the Welsh for flower but sounds like it's not common name so I would avoid.

Ces6 · 25/05/2019 16:15

According to Google Fflur is flurry in Welsh. Blodyn is flower!

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 25/05/2019 16:15

Don’t like the name but if you’re going with it spell it properly!

CloserIAm2Fine · 25/05/2019 16:44

Well I’m not a fan of Fleur anyway but Fflur is just awful!

There are loads of really lovely welsh names out there, Fflur is not one of them!

UCOinanOCG · 25/05/2019 16:46

Fleur is lovely and i can pronounce it. Fflur i am saying as Fuf-lur in my head and it sounds ridiculous!

flowery · 25/05/2019 16:49

Is Fflur actually a name in Wales?

LashesZ · 25/05/2019 16:49

Fflur is what I'd consider a proper welsh name that Welsh speakers would be familiar with but anyone else would trash the pronunciation. It's got quite a rolled "r" to it.

LashesZ · 25/05/2019 16:50

@flowery yeah, got a few friends with the name. There's also a singer called Fflur Dafydd.

Ces6 · 25/05/2019 16:54

@LashesZ what does it mean?

OwlBeThere · 25/05/2019 16:57

fflur is definitely a name. But it’s quite hard to pronounce if you aren’t welsh speaking j think. Fleerrr- It has a rolled r at the end. I think it’s s lovely name when said correctly but most non-welsh speaking people butcher it into flee-uh. I’d go with Fleur if I lived outside of Wales.

LazyLizzy · 25/05/2019 16:59

Fflur looks like a stutter.

Fleur is lovely.

LashesZ · 25/05/2019 17:00

@Ces6 I have no idea. I can see it derives from the French "Fleur" but isn't a translation of flower. I remember learning in Welsh lessons that the language is related to French (a Brythonic language maybe? Might be confusing that one) and we a few similar worlds like "pont" is "bridge" in both languages, and "triste" and "trist" means "sad"

OwlBeThere · 25/05/2019 17:01

@Ces6 I believe it’s after ystrad-fflur which is mentioned in welsh folk tales and is very beautiful. Lots of books will say it’s meaning is ‘flower’ but that’s not correct.

Mummyoflittledragon · 25/05/2019 17:02

I think Fflur sounds like a joke name. Your child will be destined to constantly have to spell he name.
