Hiya, everyone! Recently I've been toying with the name Remi for a girl, and have been putting up polls and asking for opinions on some websites. I just think it's such a nice name. Cute and simple, not so out there, but still very much a real name. But I keep getting mixed reviews from everyone; some people absolutely adore it, and some say it's a guy's name. I know a number of women who are named Remi, so that was a bit of a surprise.

Have you guys ever met a Remi in your life? What do you think of the name?

I know a Remy - French- and a Remi - Nigerian.

soundsystem · 21/05/2019 19:35

I don't know any Remi's but I do know a 4-year-old Remy. I like it, for me it doesn't have any particular association in terms of family background, etc, so o wouldn't have any preconceived ideas of what a Remi/Remy would be like, if that makes sense.

Remi I would wonder if it was short for something, although I'm not sure what!

Elderflower14 · 21/05/2019 19:36

I went to school with a female Remi 34 years ago.

LL83 · 21/05/2019 19:37

I know one Remy, she is a girl. Nice name. Don't love it but don't think anything negative about it.

NorthernRunner · 21/05/2019 19:39

I know three Remi’s all boys, one if a french boy, the other two are British.
I love it and think it would work on a girl!

NannyRed · 21/05/2019 19:41

For me the name definitely reminds me of the rat in ratatouille.
I’m more confused as to why an adult who has made the decision to have a child thinks she needs to approval of random strangers from the internet to help name her child.
Make your choice. She’s your child.

Calixtine · 21/05/2019 19:47

I really like Remy for a boy, but not keen on Remi for a girl, sorry. Romy?

TurquoiseAndPurple · 21/05/2019 19:50

You're going to keep getting mixed reviews. If you like it just go for it. I wouldn't keep asking. Especially if you keep getting the same respones..

BringMeTheVoiceOfAnthonyHead · 21/05/2019 20:13

Is it short for Remedy?

Shadow1234 · 21/05/2019 20:14

I know one Remi who is a 23 year old girl (and I prefer it spelt this way for a girl). I like the Remy spelling better for a boy. (but I think it's a lovely name whatever spelling you choose).

Also know a Romy (which again I think is lovely).

Please go with what you love, and don't worry if you get mixed reviews, you are never going to get everyone on board with any name you choose (we all have different tastes).

Good luck.

I’ve known two.

One a magnificent attitudinal mare.

The other my hairdresser’s daughter.

wednesdayrobyn · 21/05/2019 20:21

I think it’s a lovely name, I hadn’t come across it for for a girl until last year but I like that it’s unusual but a proper name.

fluffyblankets · 21/05/2019 20:23

I actually quite like it! but your opinion is the one the matters most, if you love it then you should use it imo!

sanityisamyth · 21/05/2019 20:25

I knew a horse called Remi

UrsulaPandress · 21/05/2019 20:37

Wonder if it’s the same one.

Proseccofuelled · 21/05/2019 21:59

I don’t like it - isn’t it a heartburn medicine?

Faster · 21/05/2019 22:02

It’s the name of my aunts dog. Female dog at least. Named after the brandy.

Moongirl10 · 21/05/2019 22:05

I really like it! There was a little girl on Masterchef Junior called Remi.

Tulio · 21/05/2019 22:15

Remi is my 2 year old daughters name! I recommend it, it’s just the right amount of cute. I had it picked out for years before, and luckily it suits her perfectly!

afterashowerr · 21/05/2019 22:15

I think it's lovely. I know a male Rhemy so I wouldn't guess if it was boy or girl on first hearing but I think I'd like it either way.

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 22/05/2019 00:37

I like the name. But where I live kids used to use it as an insult ie ‘you rem’ as in not very bright. I can’t get over that association.

HalfBloodPrincess · 22/05/2019 00:42

I was going to say that I liked it, but the more times I’ve read them t in previous responses, the more I’ve gone off of it.

chipsandgin · 22/05/2019 00:53

When I was at school the two most bullied groups were the ‘remmys’ (remedial set) & ‘keeners’ (top set) - one or the other of those words were chanted repeatedly at the kids from those classes by groups of bullies (utter arseholes) as they came out at break. Kids who were academically challenged would also generally be referred to as ‘Remmys’ and it was a standard insult for anyone saying something stupid I.e ‘shut up you remmy..’ etc

So for me Remi would be a no, as would Keener! Romy similar though & lovely?

chipsandgin · 22/05/2019 00:57

Apologies to the pp who has used it - hadn’t realised/seen that/thought that through- hopefully the subsequent generation with a thankfully more politically correct outlook will have long forgotten the association of the word. Sorry.

diddlediddle · 22/05/2019 01:45

Stop posting the question on multiple websites you nana!

If you like it, use it. There is no name that everyone will like. By now you will have a very good sample of opinions and you can choose which ones you care about, if any. If you are dithering, maybe it's not the one and there's another you prefer.

Stop worrying so much about what everyone else thinks.
