If you named your DC after a concept (Faith, Charity etc)

...did you do it because you like the sentiment or just because you liked the name?

Really just a curiosity post sparked by someone saying on Twitter today that Liz Truss named her daughter Liberty because she’s such an ardent believer in freedom and democracy...

I know someone with a name that suggests a political perspective her parents are fully against (think pro Irish independence) but they really loved it so went for it anyway! Was wondering how much commitment went into concept based names Smile

The Merry comment made me laugh out loud Grin
Success is properly out there - I read an article saying names of the opposite style were growing in popularity in the US - I’m desperately trying to think of the examples but think along the lines of Angry Rage Sadness Grin Grin

Or I guess less emotions more concept so Liar / Deception / Foolhardy / Aggressive

I quite like the idea of shouting ‘Deception’ across the park Grin

I knew of triplets named Faith, Hope and Clare. And I was once bumped into by a small girl whose mum called out "Mind out of the lady's way, Destiny".

My ds is Chase, we chose it because we loved it. I felt he lived up to his name during his toddler years as I chased after him a lot.

17caterpillars1mouse · 17/05/2019 13:28

My dd1 is Patience.i just loved the name, though like all small children she could do with some Patience at times :)

sweetsaltypopcorn · 17/05/2019 21:47

I worked with a Verity once; she was a lying bitch.
Also knew a Freedom who liked to climb things!

OhTheRoses · 17/05/2019 23:00

Middle name of one of the loveliest women I know: Loveness.

QOD · 17/05/2019 23:04

An American acquaintances Pastor has a dd called ‘Chastity’ who got pregnant in a Bible Belt state at 14

whatausername · 17/05/2019 23:50

Well, with a father like that the girl never stood a chance. Highly doubt she had any real sex education

captainblonde · 18/05/2019 08:17

DC goes to school with a 'Beauty'. This might make me sound shallow but the whilst the child is a lovely girl she is not beautiful in physical terms. It must be a hard name to carry off for her in today's world where people are so much judged by their physical appearance.

I think it is always better to stay clear of these kind of concept names.

I’ve never heard of Temerity as a name before, I love it. I wanted Felicity for DD but her dad hated it. I also love Temperance and Clemency but wouldn’t be brave enough to use either and if her dad didn’t like Felicity he certainly wasn’t going to go for either of those!

When working in Ghana I met lots of people with virtue names but the ones I remember the most were two young men named Courage and Awesome

AlphaJura · 18/05/2019 08:33

My ds was watching a YouTube video the other day and there was a little boy called Wisdom. Quite like that although I don't know if I'd be brave enough to use it.

brokenpromisesorlies · 18/05/2019 08:35

‘Hope’ - my own wonderful dm has died and she gave me hope that life would be ok again.

CaptainCallisto · 18/05/2019 09:10

There were boy/girl Ghanaian siblings in my year at uni named Redemption and Celerity. Redemption went by Dem, and got really cross if you used his full name, which made me think he wasn't particularly comfortable with it.

AlliKaneErikson · 19/05/2019 04:16

I’ve come across a girl called Miracle too (great if you’re singing the opening song of Matilda!).

Littlepond · 19/05/2019 04:23

My daughter is Grace. I just love the name!

99bb · 19/05/2019 08:26

Whether or not I like the names aside, I’d be more likely to go with a concept like Liberty, than something that might describe a person, which I don’t think I’d ever have the guts for. I know if I named my kid Grace, she’d end up being incredibly clumsy!

BellMcEnd · 19/05/2019 10:50

@99bb or Chastity..........Grin

ktjerl · 19/05/2019 11:00

I have a Hope and a Grace. Grace is a family name. I didn't realise it was going to become so popular though. I chose them because i liked the names rather than anything to do with the meaning.

rosesandveg · 19/05/2019 20:17

My daughter is a Christmas baby, she's called Merry, short for Meredith. And at the moment she lives up to it! We wanted to make sure she had another option to use, however, in case she felt Merry didn't suit in the future, which is why we gave her Meredith. I actually use both interchangeably now.

Yoozanaim · 19/05/2019 21:58

I have two virtue/concept-names children, chosen for both the meaning and I just love the look/sound of the name, and that they aren't much used. Both have more mainstream shortenings that can be used should they not want to introduce themselves with their concept names.

AlphaJura · 20/05/2019 22:40

I know a boy with middle name Miracle. It's to do with the circumstances surrounding him coming into the world so I can see why they named him that. I don't know, but heard of a baby girl called Dream recently.

Willowkoko · 20/05/2019 22:48

I knew of a man called Wise, he was one of the coolest men I’ve ever met, he could play 5/6 instruments and was extremely well spoken.

Janus · 20/05/2019 22:52

I too was going to give my daughter a middle name of Hope after a m/c and loads of test after trouble then conceiving. In the end we didn’t and I’m glad as I don’t want to always associate her with that.
I always liked the name Joy but mostly from watching ‘Drop the Dead Donkey’ where Joy was so wonderfully miserable!! (Have to be a certain age to remember that!!)

motortroll · 20/05/2019 23:07

I taught a boy called blessing. He was not one!!

My middle girl has faith as a middle name because I like it. But I recently (she's 10!) realised that as she has a biblical first name it does make it sound a bit religious which we are not! Still love it though and it's apt for her now as we have Faith she'll turn out alright in the end Grin
