If you named your DC after a concept (Faith, Charity etc)

...did you do it because you like the sentiment or just because you liked the name?

Really just a curiosity post sparked by someone saying on Twitter today that Liz Truss named her daughter Liberty because she’s such an ardent believer in freedom and democracy...

I know someone with a name that suggests a political perspective her parents are fully against (think pro Irish independence) but they really loved it so went for it anyway! Was wondering how much commitment went into concept based names Smile

I love Honor, both the meaning and the name. Sadly I didn’t think of it for dd!

randomsabreuse · 13/05/2019 23:20

I have to admit that I really liked the idea of Patience for a 2nd girl. Imogen Maria Patience to be specific... would have been so apt for my first though...

TroysMammy · 13/05/2019 23:22

There was a little girl in Pets at Home when I was once at the vets up to all sorts. She fiddled with this, picked up and dropped that and her father kept on bellowing "Temperance". Obviously didn't live up to her name.

Didactylos · 13/05/2019 23:28

Anyone remember which Terry Pratchett novel has a family where the girls are named after virtues (Patience, Chastity etc) and due to a slight misunderstanding of the concept the boys end up called after vices (Anger, Covetousness & Bestiality)?

I think Schadenfreude is a lovely name for a girl

Aaahhhbump · 13/05/2019 23:33

randomsabreuse Grin think those initials suit all children at some point.

My youngest's name means dreamer. She slept most of the time after her birth. Turns out she had jaundice and that's why she slept so much.

MandalaYogaTapestry · 13/05/2019 23:40

Didactylos you were joking about Shandenfreude, right? 🤔

coastalwalk · 13/05/2019 23:41

Both. Grace because we liked it and also the concept of undeserved favour or gift. Not particularly the physical idea of gracefulness though that's nice too. The name doesn't define the child but rather how we feel about the child if that makes any sense.

Also liked Honor and Verity.

AlliKaneErikson · 14/05/2019 00:42

I met a Marvellous once.

missymousey · 14/05/2019 07:04

I like Temerity for a girl's middle name - both the sound of it and the feistiness it implies - but ironically I haven't the guts to use it 😁

MsTSwift · 14/05/2019 07:09

I think Grace is actually quite a bold choice. The 2 young girls I know are (to be polite) the direct opposite of graceful - very large and unkind.

ChipInTheSugar · 14/05/2019 07:10

I met an Honest once - he should have been called Incompetent Hmm

trilbydoll · 14/05/2019 07:11

I know a Joy and she's one of the most joy-less people I've ever met. Maybe the pressure of her name was too much for her?!

Chasingsquirrels · 14/05/2019 07:13

I know of someone with 4 girls, Hope, Grace, Liberty & Verity.
No idea if it was the meaning or the names, although with all 4 you'd assume it was meanings.

Ces6 · 14/05/2019 07:14

I used to love these names but I don't like the way they are almost always for girls - doesn't seem fair, like giving them a label to live up to!

RageAgainstTheVendingMachine · 14/05/2019 07:15

Seeing as I'd had a few too many the first time I conceived I guess I should have called her Merry Wink

Antonin · 14/05/2019 15:40

Whatausername Virginia reminds me of the old joke “” They called her Virgin for short but not for long “
I knew someone called Mercy. Very good sweet young woman and it sounded good but I personally wouldn’t use it

Baloonphobia · 14/05/2019 15:42

I'm struggling to think of many anti Irish independence names. Unity?

SE13Mummy · 14/05/2019 17:04

DD has Hope as a middle name because, as with PPs, she was born after a number of miscarriages, a ruptured ectopic and being told it was unlikely we'd be able to have DC.

Dollywilde · 14/05/2019 21:08

@baloonphobia trying not to out myself (or her!) but think first name Liberty and then middle name a traditional name for the homeland Grin

Baloonphobia · 14/05/2019 21:11

I have all kinds of mad combinations going through my head GrinGrin.

TuppenceTwo · 16/05/2019 21:54

Dollywilde Something like Saoirse Éireann/Erin?

I actually quite like the sound of Temperance but not something I feel strongly enough about to justify a name! I’d have to like the name first and then the meaning.

Headstand · 16/05/2019 22:09

I have a real weakness for virtue names. I adore the names Hope, Constance, Felicity and Grace (although not all in the same name, obviously). I love the symbolism and meaning behind them.

Although looking at my list they are all female names. What male virtue names are there?

Landfilly · 16/05/2019 22:15

My DD is Honor. We chose it as we both really liked the name, and what it represents. To us, it's a strong name, if that makes sense, and to me it was important that our DD had a strong name.

Lancelottie · 16/05/2019 22:17

Weirdly the male virtue names tend to be the adjective rather than the noun: so you get Felix, Clement, Pious, Benedict, Constant, E(a)rnest.

Landfilly · 17/05/2019 07:01

Oh possibly the most unpleasant woman I've ever met in all my years was called Temerity!

Utter bitch
