Is Jemima a strong or twee name?

As per title really, I can't decide which camp it falls into.

It is a biblical name so it's obviously got transition on its side and I like the strong J sound at the start.

But on the other hand it ends in an A and I feel like lots of girls names ending in A are very popular and a bit twee and nothingy. I personally put names like Mia, myla, isla, lila, ayla, amelia in this category. I know there's nothing wrong with those names if you like them but I personally don't so I want to avoid a name with the same connotations.

What do people think?

It sounds more twee to me. It doesn't come across as a strong name

SundayMorningSun · 13/05/2019 12:40

More twee to me - but because of the Puddleduck assocation, not because of the A at the end.

I think there's lots of strong names ending in A, but this isn't necessarily one.

Jemima Puddleduck and the rag doll in Plat School both immediately come to mind, and so I really don't like the name, it feels twee.

Interestingly, I find the Isla/Mia/Lila names quite different from Amelia, which feels like a good name.

I wouldn't put Jemima in the same category though.

steppemum · 13/05/2019 12:45

whoops, Play School, not plat!

MsMarvellous · 13/05/2019 12:45

The only Jemima I know is a belter of a little girl. Strong, confident, bright and lovely. She's in no way twee and all the way awesome

lunicorn · 13/05/2019 12:46

Kind of both. I could imagine a doll on the one hand and an eccentric strong person on the other.

Rainandwine · 13/05/2019 13:07

I love this name but I’m not sure what category it falls in

Still18atheart · 13/05/2019 13:11

I really like the name however Puddleduck comes to mind

DobbysLeftSock · 13/05/2019 13:11

Twee. I really dislike how many girls' names end in either an 'a' or 'eee' sound. It's very noticeable when reading down a register!

Also, I have to admit my first thought is Puddleduck.

sue51 · 13/05/2019 13:12

I thought Puddleduck too. I still like it though.

Sculpin · 13/05/2019 13:14

I wouldn't think of it as especially 'strong'. It's not twee either though. I like it.

Strugglingtodomybest · 13/05/2019 13:14

I really like it and I have the same opinion as you on the rest.

NeverSayFreelance · 13/05/2019 13:16

Another one on the Puddleduck train. Sorry OP!

diddlediddle · 13/05/2019 13:19

Thanks all... seems mixed opinions!

I don't care about the puddleduck link, I'm at peace with that!

I just don't want it lumped in with twee names! I guess it does depend on the child.

Any name suggestions also welcome.

Definitely strong. And not at all in the same category as the very popular sounds like Lila, Mila, Isla, etc. I love the strong J start when that is a fairly rare sound now - currently it's all about vowels and 'l's, though 'f' and 'v' sounds are current as well. So, I find Jemima quite distinctive and fresh. The puddleduck ref doesn't worry me at all.

MikeUniformMike · 13/05/2019 13:23

I think it's lovely. Not twee and not too strong.

BoomZahramay · 13/05/2019 13:24

Neither. It's lovely.

ThatCurlyGirl · 13/05/2019 13:26

Ditto over here. And she's Mima (pronounced my-muh) as a nickname which I really like too. Gorgeous name!

livin · 13/05/2019 13:26

Puddleduck.

Jellycat1 · 13/05/2019 13:53

It could definitely be strong. I could imagine a top city lawyer called Jemima.

Summerwalk · 13/05/2019 13:54

Weak and twee for me

PetrichorRain · 13/05/2019 13:55

Twee to me, sorry. And a bit whiny in my head - it's the middle syllable, jem-MIIIIIIIIIIIIIII-ma is how I hear it.

I had no idea it was Biblical!

paintwater · 13/05/2019 13:56

Honestly it’s a bit of both. The name itself is strong and beautiful, but the association with puddleduck is a bit twee.

stellarfox · 13/05/2019 14:18

I like it. I can see it becoming more popular

teyem · 13/05/2019 14:24

Yup, like the others, the instant association for me is Puddleduck.
