Is Jemima a strong or twee name?

As per title really, I can't decide which camp it falls into.

It is a biblical name so it's obviously got transition on its side and I like the strong J sound at the start.

But on the other hand it ends in an A and I feel like lots of girls names ending in A are very popular and a bit twee and nothingy. I personally put names like Mia, myla, isla, lila, ayla, amelia in this category. I know there's nothing wrong with those names if you like them but I personally don't so I want to avoid a name with the same connotations.

What do people think?

The Jemima I know is a cool beautiful feisty 17 year old. Not twee to me.

Newyearsameoldshit · 14/05/2019 21:22

The only one I know in real life is an absolute badass so it's a strong name for me!

Zebrasinpyjamas · 14/05/2019 21:26

I love this name but it's hideous with my surname unfortunately so I couldn't use it.

GrumbleBumble · 14/05/2019 21:34

The only one I've ever knowingly met in the flesh is a kind, vivacious , wickedly funny 40 something so definitely not in the twee camp for me.

Ohyesiam · 14/05/2019 21:39

Twee and somehow vaguely embarrassing to me.

diddlediddle · 14/05/2019 21:42

@Ohyesiam vaguely embarrassing?! 😂

My dd is called Jemima.
She is eccentric, strong and in no way twee. She gets called J or Mima (which is what she calls herself).
We love her name (obviously), it does seem to be a bit marmite though !

Nightingalesinging · 14/05/2019 21:45

It's a bit Jilly Cooper

LBOCS2 · 14/05/2019 21:47

I love Jemima (also knew a Mima at school) but it was vetoed by DH because of the Puddleduck connection.

We went with Juliet instead, which I think is also a strong name.

Ohyesiam · 14/05/2019 21:47

I know diddlediddle, sorry!
There were two sisters at my school called Henrietta and Jemima. They always sounded like joke names to me, names for a pantomime horse or something.
I always felt a bit cringe and embarrassed for them.

MyBlueMoonbeam · 14/05/2019 21:52

I love - but it reminds of the rag doll I gave the name to 🙈

LittleDoveLove · 14/05/2019 21:53

I really like Jemima, I don't think it's either twee or strong really but it is nice.

diddlediddle · 14/05/2019 21:55

@Ohyesiam haha well in that context I get it but I do feel like Jemima was being dragged down by Henrietta. They sound like the ugly sisters.

Children in the US would laugh make fun of her. So if she’s not visiting there then that’s no worry.

KatherineJaneway · 14/05/2019 22:06

Jemima. I'd think playschool as that's my age talking.

Ohyesiam · 14/05/2019 22:10
  • [ grin] yes you’re probably right, they both always looked ill at ease, but I doubt it was their names!
wibbletooth · 14/05/2019 22:10

Love Jemima - was on my short list for girls but only had boys. Think it’s prettier than Gemma/Jemma and stronger/more unusual than them too - but if you/your dd likes either of those options then you could easily use it as a nickname.
