What do you think of Jude for a boy?

We are pregnant with our first baby and find out the gender tomorrow. We have Evelyn for a girl, and Jude for a boy. What are your opinions on Jude?

Not keen, sorry

Lavenderblues · 13/05/2019 07:45

It sounds ok in English (maybe a little girly?) but it doesn't travel well into other languages. In German for example it's pronounced Yoo-de and means Jew.

Pinkarsedfly · 13/05/2019 07:48

Love it. It would have been DS1’s name if my nobhead of an XH hadn’t vetoed it.

WalterIris · 13/05/2019 07:53

Jude means Jew in German. I wouldn't use that as a name myself, as if as an adult they decide to move to a German speaking country people will think its a bit bizarre as a name.

Its like naming your child Islam or Jehovah

Cbeebiesrehab · 13/05/2019 07:55

Walter Christian is used as a name.

Stravapalava · 13/05/2019 07:58

I like it.

TwinsTrollsandHunz · 13/05/2019 08:01

I don’t think ‘religious’, I think ‘child of a surfy couple’. It’s nice

Lavenderblues · 13/05/2019 08:05

But Christian is a well known and common name in most countries including Germany.

Der Jude is only a noun in German, meaning the Jew. It is not a name.

Cbeebiesrehab · 13/05/2019 08:33

Jude could use his middle name on the off chance he up sticks to Germany. I wouldn’t let an imaginary relocation be the decider on my child’s name. Each to their own though, may be a problem if you’re a traveller but then there are lots of names that don’t travel particularly well, and it’s not like ‘Jew’ is a bad or offensive word.

ReallyUselessEngines · 13/05/2019 08:38

I like it but it gives me Hey Jude as an earworm - annoying people might sing the song at him when he's older (not me! But u would be thinking of the song). It also makes me think of Jude Law.

evilharpy · 13/05/2019 08:38

I love it. My cousin is nearly 60 and his middle name is Jude, I’ve always thought it was lovely.

WalterIris · 13/05/2019 09:32

Cbeebies - 'Jude' was plastered everywhere as a derogatory meaning. You don't have to live in Germany, I would have looked at a job applicants resume in London and thought ' strange parents'.

A person today wouldn't call themselves a 'Jew' in English. Its a noun. They would say they are Jewish.

The song 'Hey Jude,' is a shortening of Lennon's son 'Julian'

Cbeebiesrehab · 13/05/2019 10:11

You would look at the name ‘Jude’ on a resume and think ‘strange parents’ Walter-I think you’re the strange one there.

Offallycheap · 13/05/2019 10:15

“Hopeless Case”

EleanorReally · 13/05/2019 10:16

obscure
Wink

no I like it

shiveringtimber · 13/05/2019 10:19

Love Jude!

itssquidstella · 13/05/2019 10:33

I love it!

Confusedbeetle · 13/05/2019 10:35

I never quite recovered from the sadness of "Jude the Obscure" and the film of the same book, Associations would be too strong

tdam · 13/05/2019 11:13

Love it. If I wasn't having a girl one of my top picks for a boy would be Jude.

I do wonder if it's going to get quite popular although in saying that there are only two in the entirety of the school I work at.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 13/05/2019 11:14

Always seems a bit wet, sorry. And whiny sounding - Ju-uude.

Madbengalmum · 14/05/2019 19:41

Really, really dislike, too many of them now, and i dislike the negative connotations with it too.

Lavenderblues · 14/05/2019 20:59

I actually know a Judith who sometimes gets called Jude.

PetraRabbit · 14/05/2019 21:05

It's nice enough. It is very much one of those names (like Oscar and Dylan) that my teenage friends were all going to call their children when they grew up. I'm 43!

tiramisu1 · 15/05/2019 06:44

Don't like it. Sorry.
