We were pretty set on the name Evie but I’ve just stumbled across the top 100 list for England & it’s number 13. 🤦🏼‍♀️

So with 4 weeks left, im looking for something new. We like classic names but not too old ‘ladyish’ something which still sounds fresh today.

Please help!!

I have 2DC, eldest in secondary and only met one Evie. The most common girls names I have come across are Olivia, Amelia, Darcy, Scarlett, Ellie, Poppy, Lilly Maisie/Maisy.

My eldest's name was around 60th place when we chose it. A few of my family thought it was a made up name. It rapidly jumped just into 10th over 7-8 years. We only met one more before secondary school, now there are three in her class and another within the year. The statistics do not always add up in reality!

If Evie feels right to you, pick Evie.

whitehalleve · 24/04/2019 21:09

My daughter's nearly 2 with a top ten name. I heaven seen or heard of another one since she was born!

Walnutwhipster · 24/04/2019 21:16

I have a twenty something Oliver and a teenage Evie (named after her great grandmother.) Neither names were anywhere near top ten when we chose them. All I see on here is posters sneering at both name choices.

Indecisivelurcher · 24/04/2019 21:22

Eva?

ilovecheese1 · 25/04/2019 09:07

Thanks everyone, the general census seems to be just go for it. We have been calling her Evie for a while (to her big sister as well) so it would seem odd changing it now... think we’ll stick with it!

Heidi and Marnie are lovely and sound similar?
I agree go for it if you love it though.Smile

WhiteVixen · 25/04/2019 09:13

I’ve also got an Amelia, she’s 7 now. I had visions of her being one of several Amelia’s at school. Turns out there were no other Amelia’s through all her childminder/preschool days. There was one other in her year at school for Reception and Yr 1, but the other Amelia moved to a different school after Yr 1, so now she’s the only one. I’ve not met another Amelia either since she was born.

If you like Evie, I’d use it. I don’t think it’s as common as you’re worried it’s going to be.

Thegirlhasnoname · 25/04/2019 09:16

I’ve got a 6 month old Evie and haven’t met another yet in all the baby groups we’ve been to or heard of one her age. We have however met 4 little girls called Iris who would all be in the same year group and 2 Emmeline’s which are both not common going by the rankings. It’s all relative and if you love the name then I would go for it.

escapade1234 · 25/04/2019 09:16

Oh please do stick with the name. I remember with one of my children I obsessed about the popularity aspect. She’s 2 now and I haven’t met any others yet. Conversely one of my children has a middle of the table name and I’ve met quite a few.

Your Evie will be yours and you won’t think about the others. Finding a name you both like isn’t always easy so don’t be swayed.

FWIW I know lots of children but so far no Evie’s.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 25/04/2019 09:24

I think if you don't go for what you really love, you end up regretting it. My DD's name is 1,911th on the list yet there was another in her primary school. I know two Evies, one who is 21 and one of four. Evelyn or Eve are lovely for the birth certificate.

Tiramisu1 · 25/04/2019 14:10

I know lots of little Evies, Evas and Eves under 10. Personally I'm not keen.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 25/04/2019 15:10

How about just Eve. Theres not many of those around, now.
Vivienne. Kate. Laura. LucY. Celia.
Norah. Dana. Elsie. Edith. Susie. Tansy. Rita. Elena. Deborah. Iris. Jane. Enid. Rosa. Louise. Maude.
Linett. Sarah. Ruth. Rachel. Moira. Dolly. Annie

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 25/04/2019 15:13

Dawn. Amy. Anya. Lois

Fatted · 25/04/2019 15:15

The only Evie I know of is the pokémon!!

Mintypea5 · 25/04/2019 15:24

I'd go for it if you love it!

We chose Oliver despite how popular it was because we love the name.
Interestingly I haven't met another Oliver yet at baby groups but tons of Theo's, Reggies, Ryan's, Noah's, Archie's etc

TheGrey1houndSpeaks · 25/04/2019 17:40

I don’t know any Evie’s at all. It was popular a good while back, not so much now.

Nonameyet1 · 25/04/2019 17:40

I love Eve and like Evie but glad you are sticking with it. It’s a pretty name.

MerryMarigold · 25/04/2019 17:50

I work with kids and we have Amelia, Amelie and Amalia. Out of about 40 kids! We also have 2 Mayas and a Mia. And 2 Mattias. I bet Mattia isn't particularly popular but that's just happened that way.

My son had the no 1 name when born. There's generally been one other in some classes but it's not really been super annoying. Dd on the other hand had a very unusual name which people constantly misspell and mispronounce which I think is more annoying.

Personally I prefer Eve.

myusernameisnotmyusername · 25/04/2019 18:30

Edie?

Fazackerley · 25/04/2019 18:32

Eve is far far nicer than Evie imo

Amy326 · 25/04/2019 18:38

My daughters name has consistently been in the top 3/4 for years and she’s still the only one in her class! We’ve only met I think one other with her name at baby groups etc. Yet there are 2 sets of duplicates in her class with much less ‘popular’ names according to the lists. I think these things are just hard to predict, popularity can vary hugely by area and you can pick something seemingly unpopular and actually loads of other people have the same idea and there’ll be quite a few when you go to baby groups / start school. Go with the name you love rather than over think popularity levels.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 25/04/2019 18:44

I have an Evie (Evelyn actually but mostly known as Evie) she is the only one in her primary school.
We don’t meet other Evies very often and if we do she loves it tbh!!
Stick with it, it’s a lovely name!

The top names used to be thousands & thousands more than the top names are now - because the current trend we all want to fit in with, is the trend of being unique. Most of a class would have had a top 10 name historically - to the point all the Johns & Marys ended up being Molly Polly & Jack. That’s just not the case anymore.

If you look at girls names where the trend is more solidly about being unique you’ll see the numbers that make it to the top spots are far lower than for the boys.

A top 13 name is statistically probably 1/2 in their year group.
