How common is Millie where you are?

I think we've finally chosen a name but it'll probably get shortened to Millie for day-to-day. I am slighty put off with how popular Millie is (according to ONS 2017). But in reality, how popular is it around you?

I haven't heard it at all for under 5s. I'm in the SE.

I like it, but if you ask me it is one of those faddy names that did the rounds late 1990s / early 2000s. All the ones I know are either in 6th Form or Uni.

So there are unlikely going to be heaps your DD's age.

switswoo81 · 17/04/2019 22:28

I have a 4yo Millie but I'm in Ireland and it wouldn't be common at all. Don't know any others.

lljkk · 17/04/2019 22:35

Plenty age 16-17yo.

MumUnderTheMoon · 17/04/2019 22:37

It doesn't really get used much where I am but that's because we use the word "millie" for a female chav.

mumof2andstillsurviving · 17/04/2019 22:38

I have an 11 year old Millie in SE london. There might have been one other in her year

Letthemysterybe · 17/04/2019 22:39

I know lots of teen Millie’s but no
Little ones.

Sophronia · 17/04/2019 23:07

I remember it being really popular about 15 years along, along with Ruby.

Sophronia · 17/04/2019 23:07

*ago not along!

confuddeledconfuddel · 17/04/2019 23:10

A Millie where I'm from (NI) is what you would call a girl as an insult so for that reason I wouldn't use it and for that reason I prob haven't come across it.

AnotherRubberDuck · 17/04/2019 23:18

Interesting. Thanks everyone.
So it's common with NI insults, dogs and teenagers! Who knew?!

Dd is 13, it's one of the more popular names amongst her friends. However, if you like it, go for it!

MillicentMartha · 17/04/2019 23:36

Ah, my granny’s name! Would have used it if any of my DC had been DDs. One in DS3’s class, nn for Amelia in her case. Age 17 now.

Exhausted18 · 17/04/2019 23:37

Another one saying I know two dogs called Millie but no humans (sorry OP Blush). I am in Ireland tho. I think if you love it, you should go for it. it is a very nice name

iwannalendyoumycoat · 17/04/2019 23:38

I’m from NI too. And a primary school teacher for past 30 years. I’ve never taught one because as others have said to be called “a wee millie” is a term of derision used to describe a “chavvy” female. Apparently it comes from the times of mill workers?

Snipples · 18/04/2019 06:23

Yes it's from the mill workers so they were Belfast Millie's and over the years I've heard Mill-Bag (or mill- beg) as a variation! I do love a bit of Belfast slang!

For what it's worth I think it's a lovely name but you just don't hear it in NI for that reason unfortunately.

PlatypusLeague · 18/04/2019 09:44

Three of primary school age, one pet.

aliceelizaloves · 18/04/2019 20:20

Just know one preschooler called this and her full name is Matilda.

Saharasunset · 18/04/2019 22:23

Really popular in the 11-13 age range. Some Millie’s who are Emilia’s but most just Millie in their own right

RavenLG · 18/04/2019 22:28

Love the name, a friends 13 year old is called Millicent with NN Millie and she’s one of the coolest kids ever

ReginaGeorgeous · 19/04/2019 21:11

I know one, under 5. Her full name is Millie, it's not a nickname.

RainhamRosie · 19/04/2019 21:16

I'm also in SE and I know one Millie who is a toddler. So I don't think it's that popular...I know 4 Evie's.

30not13 · 19/04/2019 21:18

Scotland - none in the nursery or primary school.
Know two in family/friends under 11

Bamchic · 19/04/2019 21:20

I am a Millie, I’m mid 20’s and know about 9 from 11-30 ish
No littlies I can think of.

Bumblebeesmum · 19/04/2019 22:09

Very common here - both my children know 2 although I think all 4 have different full names to one another

It wouldn’t put me off though

Mog6840 · 19/04/2019 22:14

My son has two in his class. He's 5.
