Anyone here with a Sebastian?

Just wondering how the name has been received by family / friends?

Do they automatically end up being called Seb?

Is it a particularly common name for babies where you live?

Thanks

I have one, it’s not common where I am)West Yorkshire) and when he was born(8 years ago) the midwife said it was the first one she had heard of in around 25 years of career.

Most people really like it, we had a lot of compliments, only the in-laws didn’t like it but it’s grown on them over the years but they only use Sebastian never Seb.

He is a Seb to most of us but I quite like Seb so it’s fine by me and he has various other nicknames from family members.

Fooferella · 16/04/2019 15:46

I have an 8 yr old Sebastian! There aren't that many around but oddly enough there is another in his class at school. Mine is known as Sebastian at school because the other is Seb. We called him Sebby until recently when he told us he prefers Seb now. He gets the full SEBASTIAN when he's in trouble Grin. Most people say they really like the name but I had one old cow who worked in the shop down the road sneer and say "that's posh isn't it". We live in Scotland in the Central Belt and I don't hear of too many other Sebastians.
I still love his name and think it's a really good solid name for when he grows up.

Tiramisu1 · 16/04/2019 16:58

My nephew is Sebastian and he gets called Sebby or Basty.

Personally I like Sebastian but don't like either nickname, they sound soft and oily (sebaceous).

Tiramisu1 · 16/04/2019 16:59

I think people regard it as 'posh' but personally I don't see that as a bad thing Confused

notacooldad · 16/04/2019 17:01

We have two friends with children that name. They are both known as Seb. One child is 14 and the other is 3.
Both sets of parents use the shortened name.

Calixtine · 16/04/2019 17:04

I don’t have one but my best friend does. He is never Seb (God forbid!) but personally I do find the full name a bit of a mouthful sometimes. It’s pretty popular where we are but still a lovely, solid name.

Calixtine · 16/04/2019 17:04

He is 3, by the way, and the others we meet tend to be 5 and under too.

ZebraKid71 · 17/04/2019 15:31

I know a couple of toddler Sebastians, one is always Sebastian but the others go by seb. It is definitely getting more popular in my area (West Yorkshire)

bridgetreilly · 18/04/2019 09:25

Seb, Bas, Bastian. A bit posh but becoming more popular.

fudgesmummy · 18/04/2019 11:18

I mind a 1.5 Yr old called Sebastian. His parents call him Seb but I tend to use his full name!!
DH's cousin has a 11 Yr old Sebastian, who is only ever called Bastian 🙂

Gertie75 · 18/04/2019 23:04

I know a 6 year old and a 2 month old, both shortened to Seb

Tiramisu1 · 19/04/2019 07:42

I find Basty and Bastian way too similar to Bastard!

PBobs · 19/04/2019 08:53

I know two little Sebastians. Both called Sebby although as they get older I suspect that would change.

JemSynergy · 02/05/2019 23:02

I love the name Sebastian and if I were to have another boy the name would certainly be a consideration. The oily comment above is not something I would even concern myself with worrying about. I love the nickname Seb for a teen.

HerRoyalNotness · 02/05/2019 23:03

Mine is 8. He gets Seb, Bastian, Sebass and full name. He loves meeting other ones.

Sparklysunflower · 02/05/2019 23:15

I find Seb/Sebby so weak and soft sounding. And Basty is too similar to Bastard imo. Shame about the nicknames because Sebastian sounds nice.

Lara53 · 04/05/2019 21:38

My friend has a Sebastian age 14. They shorten it to Bas and everyone calls him Bas -never Sebastian. I love the name

Beach11 · 04/05/2019 21:42

I have a Sebastian, he’s five. The only one in his school. Everyone calls him Sebastian. X

llangennith · 04/05/2019 21:46

We have a Sebastian. Everyone including teachers calls him Sebby. As he's got older most of his friends are shortening it to Seb. He's never Sebastian. Nice for him that he has a choice of three names.

Beach11 · 04/05/2019 21:48

It’s not popular where we are in South East. Never heard any derogatory comments about his name. We didn’t share his name until he was born to avoid the unnecessary opinions

BlueAndYellowPurplePills · 04/05/2019 21:49

It was on my short list. Love the name but it didn’t suit my boy and I wasn’t in love with the shortened versions.
I know of about 4 in our area all under five.

IDontMindAnythingWillDo · 04/05/2019 21:55

I have one. At home he’s Sebba (but he’s only tiny so I don’t think this will follow him to big school). The rest of the time he’s Seb or Sebastian.

I always thought three-letter, one syllable names were the names of the boys everyone fancies at school and who are always decent blokes:

Seb
Tom
Ben
Sam
Dom
Joe
...etc.

All good eggs.

Howtotrainyourhamster · 04/05/2019 21:55

Two in one class our small village school, one is Sebby and the other Seb. I don’t mind Sebastian but Seb does make me think sebaceous. Really dislike Bas/Basty, it sounds dodgy and feels a bit forced. Also know one other Seb who is always Seb, don’t know if shirt for Sebastian. They are aged 5,5 and 6. I’d say it’s quite popular, hear it out and about a lot too.

MollyYouInDangerGirl · 04/05/2019 21:57

I have a nephew called Sebastian. I love the name and my sister gets lots of compliments on it.

Most of the family call him Seb, some call him sebastian, his 2 siblings call him Sebby :)

AliciaJohnson · 04/05/2019 21:57

Lovely name. I know a few. Mostly known as Sebby, but one has just declared that he will henceforth only be known as Sebastian.
