Hi
I can't get on board with the current appetite for vintage names(Ava, Martha, Mabel etc)
But I want something traditional and substantial a bit sparky?
What are your opinions on the names Lucy and Zoe?

I like them both actually! They aren’t popular around young children from my experience more popular with people my own age (late 20s, early 30s) I don’t even know which I prefer, they’re both nice!

Ribbonsonabox · 25/03/2019 11:49

I like them both!
What about
Erin
Meave
Merryn
Kirsty
Krista
Chloe
Kayla
Emma

BlueMerchant · 25/03/2019 11:50

I'd choose Lucy. It's more classic.
Zoe is dated. Very 90s and just no.

Sophronia · 25/03/2019 12:03

Zoe

Thetruthwillout1 · 25/03/2019 12:14

Haha so funny when one of the names is your own and you can read all the reasons why people don't like it! Either name is nice. I've never had any problems with my name over the years.

EspressoPatronum · 25/03/2019 12:16

I prefer Zoe

herecome · 25/03/2019 12:19

Thanks for the effort Ribbons but those names feel a bit modernised and American to me with exception of Emma and maeve ( which is quite vintage retro to my tastes).

I prefer Lucille to Lucy and Zara to Zoe.

Zoeputthatdown · 25/03/2019 12:23

Umm, Zoe Grin
Lucy is a classic. The ones I know get their names shortened to Lu though.
Zara is popular.

herecome · 25/03/2019 12:25

Thanks both but I just can't get on with names with 'a' on the end so Zara doesn't appeal

I’m a lucy.

It’s boring. It’s ‘little girl’ cutesy. It gets shortened to Loo. Or Luce. I really dislike it.

Zoey is the better of the two, but not by much.

Milicentbystander72 · 25/03/2019 12:27

I have a Lucy. She's a teen though and certainly not a bland person! I think it was in the top ten when she was born but it's slipped way down now.

I love Zoe too. I've not heard it a lot recently and I had a friend called Zoe at school who was lovely Grin.

It's good that I don't get over sensitive on these boards. My own name regularly gets slagged off here Grin

Fakeflowersandlemonade · 25/03/2019 12:27

I have a lucy. There actually arnt that many of them in her school. There are 2 others in a 300 child school. We also gave her a very individual middle name to spark it up a bit x

SweetAsSpice · 25/03/2019 12:27

Zoe. I knew a Zoie and loved that spelling too. She did the ï over the i, which looked cool as when we were at school (probably not correct use of it though!)

septembersunshine · 25/03/2019 12:30

I have a Lucy and she loves her name. It really suits her. It's not popular here (east anglia). She is the only lucy at her school (up to age 11) and my daughter at secondary says there is only 1 that she knows off after 2 years there.

Lucy is a beautiful name. Means 'light' in latin. I would stay away from Lucia for pronunciation reasons. We know a 2 year old Lucia and it's pronounced Loo-chee- ahh. Not Loo-see-ahh (which sounds more like Lucy). Just looses its appeal to me. Lucy is a classic.

zen1 · 25/03/2019 12:30

What about Chloe? I don’t mind either Zoe or Lucy though; I know several, all early - mid teens. I always think of Zoe as a 70s name rather than a 90s name though!

septembersunshine · 25/03/2019 12:31

Ps my Lucy is not bland. She is the life and soul of her class! Full of life and spirit.

Zoe actually sounds duller to the ear.

Milicentbystander72 · 25/03/2019 12:41

Waves to all the parents of Lucy's and Lucy's themselves. 👋

My Lucy loves her name too. She has a quirky middle names she's proud of too. In her school of 1,300 pupils there's only 2 others she knows. She's not bothered by its popularity or not though.

I was never going to choose Lucy but as she was born, dawn broke and it started to get light. Lucy is derived from 'light' afterall.

IamPickleRick · 25/03/2019 12:44

I don’t think Zoe is timeless. It dates the same as Lyndsey or Kerry or Kacey.

Lucy is timeless and I really like it.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 25/03/2019 13:03

I don't like Zoe at all. Much prefer Lucy and I only know one, who isn't in the UK and is two. I suppose my associations are Lucy Honeychurch (a bit wet) and The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (she had character). It's not an especially strong name but, where I live anyway, unusual and pretty.

IsolaPribby · 25/03/2019 13:07

I have a Lucy and she is very sparky. The name suits her to a tee, and there is only one other at her school.
So I can only offer a very biased opinion, but I say go with Lucy!

Pemba · 25/03/2019 14:01

Zoe is beautiful and classic. Lovely meaning of 'life'. Yes, it was popular in the 80s/90s, so what? Much nicer than Zara, which still seems a bit faddy. Main association is Princess Anne's daughter.

I do like Lucy, which is pretty and classic, but it always seems very frilly and girly to me. Zoe is a stronger name.

Pemba · 25/03/2019 14:04

And Zoe is nothing like Kerry, Kacey, etc., how ridiculous. That pp obviously knows nothing of the origins of the name.

I know one 5 year old Zoe, my cousin's child.

IamPickleRick · 25/03/2019 14:07

Kerry means Dusky and Lyndsey means Lake. And that matters not, because they still sound dated.

HalfBloodPrincess · 25/03/2019 14:07

Thinking about it, I think the reason I dislike my name is because my sisters all have long, sophisticated names that can be shortened to actual names iyswim, like Josephine/Josie, Cassandra/Cassie, Elizabeth/Liza (not their actual names) and I was always jealous that I couldn’t do that. Plus my name necklace (compulsory in the 80s/90s) was a lot smaller than theirs 🤣

I suppose it’s not so bad really.
