Ottilie? Georgia?

Hi ladies,
I know I have just named my second (!!) but DH and I would love another girl already and have started thinking about some girl names (we are all sorted for boys names).

I like the name Ottilie and it is growing on me, what does everyone think? I really love it but I don't know if it's too 'weird'?
Our other name is Georgia. I've always loved this name but I'm started to think of it as the 'safe option'.
What do you think? Which is nicer? Any other girls names I could like?

Both nice, prefer Ottilie. I know one or two.

lazyspoon · 24/03/2019 11:58

Love Ottilie! Wanted this for my daughter but partner said no!

Netflixaddiction · 24/03/2019 11:58

I know Ottilie is becoming more “normal and widespread” but I still think it’s a little pretentious. Georgia is safer and more timeless. Though I think I prefer Georgina.

B1inky · 24/03/2019 12:06

Best friend at school had a sister named Ottilie - everybody except the parents called her Tilly. An unusual but nice name.

aliceandkids77 · 24/03/2019 12:23

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I’m really starting to love Ottilie, but another problem is our surname end in -y, begins with M and is the surname of a very, very famous (now late) singer. So we think its a bit rhymey? (also, I want to see if anybody can guess our surname ahaha!)

Marley....

I love Ottilie but where I live the t's wlujd
Most definitely be dropped and ruin the name. Does Ottilie work in your local accent?

aliceandkids77 · 24/03/2019 13:20

luckyduck88 , no, we are from London so you say the t’s, I don’t think pronounciation is the problem. I can see why it would be if we were American tho.
(ps , no it’s not Marley haha. much less commen and it’s also a metal!)

Oh i would love Freddies name! Ottilie goes with it however, i know two that have been born in the past month. Is it having a moment?

bridgetreilly · 24/03/2019 13:24

Ottilie Mercury. No.

Georgia Mercury would be lovely.

Expressedways · 24/03/2019 13:26

Ottilie Mercury sounds so cool (I’m guessing that’s your surname based on what you’ve said). I love the name Ottilie, it’s DD’s middle name and was my top pick but DH wasn’t quite so keen, sigh.
I don’t like Georgia at all.

EdWinchester · 24/03/2019 13:34

You're both thinking of naming a baby not yet conceived when you've only just had one? Confused

Where I live, Ottilie is the nom de jour.

emilybrontescorsett · 24/03/2019 13:35

I've never liked Georgia, I don't know why. I agree Georgina is nicer.
I don't know any Ottilies so it is quite 'out there' to me but I like it.

CarpetGate · 24/03/2019 13:55

Both gorgeous.

VirginiaWolfHall · 24/03/2019 14:02

I much prefer Georgia, it’s classic, strong, and ‘fits in’ wherever. Ottilie sounds fussy, a bit shrill and somewhat pretentious.

And Georgina reminds me of a soggy pudding.

RoryLeighGilmore · 24/03/2019 14:09

I love Ottilie but have had to take it off my list as it's just so popular now, and being a child of the 80s where there were several of my namesake in every school year, I don't want that for my children.

sunflower332 · 24/03/2019 14:17

I think Ottilie is beautiful.

ReginaPhalange89 · 24/03/2019 14:27

Not overly keen on Ottilie tbh. Also don't think it sounds good with your surname if it ends with the same sound.

Georgia is lovely. It was on our list this time but we're having a boy !

PolarBearDisguisedAsAPenguin · 24/03/2019 14:45

Ottilie is quite popular where I am, although it was a name I hadn’t heard of until about four years ago when I met two in one day and have met a few more since.

I do much prefer Ottilie to Georgia but I wonder whether Ottile will be a name of its generation in the same way Sarah was of the 70s/80s.

aliceandkids77 · 24/03/2019 16:11

thank you for everyone's messages! x

@EdWinchester both my DH and I are name freaks, so clearly we are already thinking ahead. I think it's because our last daughter we renamed her when she was a few weeks old and it confused a lot of people so we'd like to be ready when the next one comes around, hopefully soon!

abcriskringle · 24/03/2019 16:17

I love Georgia. And George for a boy so you could be sorted for either sex! My DH and I are the same - we've already named our next 4 kids (not that we will be having 4 more but if we do then we are sorted, haha!).

OrdinaryGirl · 24/03/2019 17:09

Georgia is gorgeous!
When I hear 'Ottilie', I think otters. Otterly. I do love otters, but....

CloserIAm2Fine · 24/03/2019 17:31

I’m really not a fan of Otillie, I just don’t like the way it looks or sounds, and it feels quite pretentious to me

I do love Georgia though, I’ve only known a few, ranging in age from 30 something to primary school age but they’ve all been lovely

Sophronia · 24/03/2019 18:01

Ottilie is pretentious, but Georgia is dated. I prefer Georgina.

MercyBodle · 25/03/2019 07:16

I think Georgia is great. I really dislike Ottilie and just can't see the appeal - utterly and otter.
