Isolde?

Hello,

I posted before about finding a name for our fourth baby.

We have Josephine, Iris and Theodore.

I came across Isolde and really like it. It’s a historic name (Tristan and Isolde), not Greek (didn’t want my eldest to be the only non Greek name => yes I’m pushing the thought process quite far... Hmm ), pronounced similarly in both french and English (I am french), and it looks really pretty written down and it’s classic but slightly uncommon.

The other classic version Iseult I’m not convinced by as in french it sounds exactly like “hideous” but with the swap of a d for a s...

I love also Essylt but we have no welsh connection.

But what do you think of it? And how do you think it fits with my other kids? Honest opinions welcome...

I pronounce it I-zold with I like in Isabelle.

Thank you Smile

pretentious in my opinion.

Needadoughnut · 24/03/2019 06:33

I love it! Although it has mythical connotations not historical ;)

I hate the sound of it. Is old ! Is all I can think. But I love your other kids names so it is not that you have bad tast.😊 What about Imelda ? A bit similar

RoseReally · 24/03/2019 06:35

I think it's beautiful

Ohyesiam · 24/03/2019 06:40

Really beautiful. Romantic and lovely.

solarsystem · 24/03/2019 06:43

I prefer Iseult which is a different spelling of the same name.

Decormad38 · 24/03/2019 06:43

What soldier? Solder? Solid? Isolated?- a big no from me it’s like too many other words.

Silversky70 · 24/03/2019 06:44

It's ugly.

FenellaMaxwell · 24/03/2019 06:45

The trouble is you get loads of people pronouncing it eye-solder

TIPosy · 24/03/2019 06:47

ceecee32 I asked for honest opinions not judgement... Grin But thank you, I need to consider all angles. Being french I probably don’t realise this is so unusual in the uk...

I had an unusual name growing up (still have) and I HATED it. Every first day of a new school year everyone would turn around in the school hall when my name would be called out. I was desperately shy and would have liked to disappear. Again yesterday introduced myself to someone and after 5 times repeating and spelling my name I just went “that’s ok, call me whatever you want.” Grin

Needadoughnut yes of course you are right! Grin

I like it but don't love it. I prefer something like Imogen. A bit more mainstream but not overused.

myfairlad · 24/03/2019 06:53

I like it.

But IMO you'd have to be happy with having 'Issy' as a nickname, as it's likely to naturally get shortened.

mulberryapples · 24/03/2019 06:54

I think you are fine as you are french, OP. I don’t like Essylt at all (sorry) but I do think Isolde is lovely.

WanderingAimlessly · 24/03/2019 06:57

Regardless of wether I like it or not, my bigger concern would be that you’ll be subjecting to your child to all the experiences you hated as a child surrounding your name. If you live in th UK it will never be said or spelt correctly. They’ll spend their life being called is-old.

mulberryapples · 24/03/2019 06:59

Well, I don’t know about that wandering

I have an unusual name and certainly it’s caused some problems and confusion in some parts of the country but not others - the uk is far more filled with Spanish and French and Italian and polish and Lithuanian names than ever before.

Plus, she’ll probably be Issie.

Don’t fear the unusual or the non-mainstream. Other people’s issues, not yours.

welshweasel · 24/03/2019 07:00

Love it! DS2 would have been Isolde if he was a girl. People get used to unusual names and their pronounciations very quickly.

beanaseireann · 24/03/2019 07:02

I love it TIPosy
I would pronounce it Iz ol dah or Is ol dah

missmouse101 · 24/03/2019 07:04

Iolanthe is much nicer. I always think it looks like 'I solder' and I'm pretty good with name pronunciation normally.

Disfordarkchocolate · 24/03/2019 07:06

I think it's a beautiful name.

ahtellthee · 24/03/2019 07:06

Awful. That poor child is set up for a life of spelling her name out to others and answering questions.

ahtellthee · 24/03/2019 07:08

Just saw you are French! I live in a French speaking country and my initial reactions was I-soldes.

A proper bargain
