Isolde?

Hello,

I posted before about finding a name for our fourth baby.

We have Josephine, Iris and Theodore.

I came across Isolde and really like it. It’s a historic name (Tristan and Isolde), not Greek (didn’t want my eldest to be the only non Greek name => yes I’m pushing the thought process quite far... Hmm ), pronounced similarly in both french and English (I am french), and it looks really pretty written down and it’s classic but slightly uncommon.

The other classic version Iseult I’m not convinced by as in french it sounds exactly like “hideous” but with the swap of a d for a s...

I love also Essylt but we have no welsh connection.

But what do you think of it? And how do you think it fits with my other kids? Honest opinions welcome...

I pronounce it I-zold with I like in Isabelle.

Thank you Smile

Isolde is going to get Izzolder.

Why the 'r' at the end?

Surely the pronunciation is I-soll -de and not I-soll-der?!

MonaChopsis · 24/03/2019 10:21

Just a note OP that I've never heard/seen the Welsh version written as 'Essylt', only as 'Esyllt' which has a really different pronunciation with the Welsh 'll' there. I think it would be very hard for a non-Welsh speaker to pronounce correctly.

sagradafamiliar · 24/03/2019 11:21

I love it.

beanaseireann · 24/03/2019 11:27

I love Iseult too but prefer Isolde.

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 24/03/2019 11:49

I think it's beautiful.

OhTheRoses · 24/03/2019 12:00

I think it's beautiful.
What are your other children called.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 24/03/2019 12:04

Names in the first post, OhTheRoses ...

GinUnicorn · 24/03/2019 12:08

Beautiful name. I love it

troppibambini · 24/03/2019 12:10

I'm on the fence it's pronounced ee-sold. My daughter has an Iseult in her class she's Irish so I'm not sure if that's the Irish version?
It's quite harsh sounding, I've heard the parents calling her ee-see which is ok I guess.

fourcanaries · 24/03/2019 12:19

Is old?

Dramatical · 24/03/2019 12:29

I wouldn't have the first clue how to say it, sorry.

Ribbonsonabox · 24/03/2019 12:30

It's our daughters name!
We pronounce it 'Iz-old-uh'
BUT my husbands mum is French and lives in France and they all call her 'Iz- olde'
I dont correct them because I think its lovely either way!
She is named after the opera though in which it is the German pronunciation.

Ribbonsonabox · 24/03/2019 12:33

And tbh no one has ever commented on it being unusual except grandparents...
I think most popular kids names now days were previously thought of as unusual.
My nephew has just been named Florian and in my sons nursery theres a Caspian and an Ophelia!
Both the same age... theres also an Arlo and some even more unique names I wont say as it would be outing, in the other age group there.

OhTheRoses · 24/03/2019 12:45

Ah apologies. I love it as I have said but I don't think Isolde is a stable mate for Josephine and Iris. I would expect your other dd's to be more of the: Xanthe, Ottilie, Ophelia, Persephone, Cressida genre.

VirginiaWolfHall · 24/03/2019 14:11

It’s nice - unusual. I think it’s a bit serious-sounding and your child will be forever spelling it and explaining how to pronounce it, but that’s because it’s so rarely heard.

Bumblebeesmum · 24/03/2019 15:34

I quite like it even though it wouldn’t be for me
But.... it depends where Iris fits in the family - if she’s the oldest I’d use it if she is or is going to be a middle sibling then I think I’d avoid her initial
I’m sure lots wouldn’t overthink it as much as me though

Bumblebeesmum · 24/03/2019 15:38

Names I think go well with Josephine, Iris & Theodore:

Alba

Delphine
Eleanor
Georgiana
Lydia
Odette
Susannah

bridgetreilly · 24/03/2019 16:36

I think it's lovely. In England it would normally have three syllables: Is-old-uh.

HeronLanyon · 24/03/2019 16:48

Big vote here for Lydia - beautiful and goes with your other childrens’ names

VeniVidiViciTwice · 24/03/2019 17:05

I love it, came across it a book a few years ago and think it is beautiful. It goes well with your other names as well.

RayaJambalaya · 24/03/2019 19:30

I really hate the names mentioned in the OP sorry...

missmouse101 · 24/03/2019 21:57

Lydia is just awful! The harsh 'lid' sound. It suits a 70 year old retired secretary but not a baby.

Trinnidad · 24/03/2019 23:02

I have friends who just used the Yseult variant, if that's of any help. I think it's a lovely name. When I studied Chretiens de Troyes there was also an 'Iseur' pronunciation but can't quite remember how it was spelt!

cheercaptain · 25/03/2019 06:36

I don't like the sound of name in OP but ultimately your decision. Your other kids' names are lovely.
