Have decided to go with Josephine as our little girls name and thinking on what nicknames we'd probably use personally for her- though appreciate nn will develop/she'd choose her own over time. Really like the nn Josie but now sure how it is more commonly pronounced. Would people tend to put more of an s or z emphasis on it I.e. say is Jo-sea or Jo-zee? Also been think we'd just use Jo.

I think it’s more of a jo-zee or jo-zy as it would be pronounced.

What about Posy?

Posey gets my vote but do bare in mind most NN's come naturally

It’s jo sea yes I think it probably is generally. I know a Josie who’s in her 80’s and she’s always been a Jozee. I prefer the S personally.

We're due in 5 weeks and naming our little girl Josy so I imagine people will pronounce it Jo-zee due to the spelling.

Jo-see is what I’d say. But one I know is Jodie. Josephine is a great name.

Thanks for the replies so far. Interesting to see that Jo-sea seems to be winning as the more popular pronunciation I thought more people would make it more of a z sound.

Had thought of Posy as nn but vetoed by OH as being a bit too 'cutesy' & tbh think I prefer Josie as well. Out of curiosity for posy would you also use a sea or zee pronunciation?

I would go with Jo or Joss. Posy is to cutesy. Josie is ok and I think i say is sort of Josy with the s almost z.

Posy as po-zee, like the word in the dictionary.

Jo-sea. I’m not keen on the Jo-zee pronunciation.

I'm a Josephine, shortened by my mother to Jose with an acute accent on the 'e', pronounced with a 'z' sound; now called Jo by all and sundry.

I really like Josie pronounced Jo-see.
You will always get the odd person rhyming it with Rosie but I think Jo-see is the more common pronunciation (depending on where you live of course).

I also really like Jocelyn.

It’s a lovely name, really growing in popularity. I know two baby Josephines, a Jo-sea and a JoJo. I also know a ‘Phiney’ (a bit like Phoebe). I think there are plenty of options for her to grow into her own nickname.

i know a Josie. And now you have me wondering. Because I think we all pronounce it as if it has a 'z' but now I'm not sure. I need to listen to her mum the next time she says it! (to be fair, we call her Jo a lot so I hadn't really thought about it) I like the soft sound of the 's' though. Also, her name is actually Josie, not Josephine.

Had to comment, I’m looking for names ideas but... I have a Josephine, we call her Josie and tbh I hadn’t thought of the Josee/Jozee issue until after she was born when one person asked how to pronounce it and I thought ‘oh why I haven’t I thought of that’ as Jozee makes me and my husband cringe. However, it’s honestly not been an issue, she’s definitely a ‘Josee’, there are one or two people who pronounce it with z but who cares?! (Apart from a relative who seems to insist on it to be controversial ) She calls herself Josie (with an s) but I like her having the option of Josephine when she’s older. It’s a great strong name imo, not ‘out there’ but not trendy. I was tempted by Posy when I was pregnant but dh vetoed & im now glad as imo it would seem a bit wet for an active intelligent girl. Go for Josie it’s a fab name, pronounce it your way I really think the vast majority of people will too

I pronounce Joseph and Josephine with a Z sound unless I know that particular person likes it pronounced with an S, but I think I've only ever heard Josie pronounced with an S. Jo gets around all the difficulty!

Josie is one of my favourite names. Great choice!
