Hello All,

I’m new here, unless I was here 14 years ago but can’t remember, officially geriatric now!
Please give your opinion on the girls name
‘Elsbeth’ as a first name? Looking to call her Betty for short...

Thank you 😊

I’ve never heard it, though google tells me it is the German form of Elizabeth. It is fine enough but i’d use Elizabeth unless I had German connections.

EntirelyAnonymised · 18/03/2019 09:30

I prefer Elizabeth anyway (it was on my list but couldn’t use it as it is DH’s nieces name).

MercyBodle · 18/03/2019 10:06

I don't mind it but prefer Elspeth (and would still use Betty).

lovemyflipflops · 18/03/2019 10:08

Elspeth an Elly for short

Ghostwriter90 · 18/03/2019 10:09

Sorry I don't like it at all. Betty is absolutely awful!!

HalfBloodPrincess · 18/03/2019 10:09

We’re using Elspeth for dd2 due in May. Quite like Elsie for a shortened nickname but will see what happens.

SallyWD · 18/03/2019 10:14

Very nice

Kb8219 · 18/03/2019 10:18

I love both names! And as someone who has made it to the grand old age of 35 with a slightly unusual spelling of a traditional age having to correct people is not the end of the world and it make you slightly unique!

Barrenfieldoffucks · 18/03/2019 10:34

Really nice OP

Time40 · 18/03/2019 10:38

I've never heard that name before. It's nice, but I think most people would hear "Elspeth" and you would have to correct them all the time. And to be honest, I think Elspeth is even nicer than Elsbeth. Speaking as someone with an unusual first name, after a lifetime of people struggling with it and getting it wrong, I'm now very very tired of it, and wish my name were something that people could understand first time.

BlueMerchant · 18/03/2019 10:39

Elsbeth looks like you've spelt Elspeth wrong.
Like Elspeth- nn Elsie

HalfBloodPrincess · 18/03/2019 10:43

ElsPeth is the Scottish form of Elizabeth and ElsBeth is the German form. Both names in their own right, neither misspelled.

MigThePig · 18/03/2019 11:16

I know a Bethany who goes by Betty, she's a sweet little thing. I wasn't sure about Betty at first but it's actually cute on a little one and is considered cool by teens we know.

llangennith · 18/03/2019 16:28

Elspeth is ok.

mrsdavys · 18/03/2019 17:14

I prefer Elspeth.
If you go with Elsbeth, when you first look at it, it’s easy to read ‘Elisabeth’ or to think the B is a typo.
Also if you go with Elsbeth, everyone will always spell it Elspeth

Boulezvous · 18/03/2019 21:02

Prefer Elspeth. To me Elsbeth just sounds like you mis-heard it or mis-spelt it.

Like someone else said I'm not a fan of Elizabeth or variants of it. And not Betty either. But that's because I've known some old ladies called Betty.

Dontrocktheboat · 18/03/2019 21:24

I think it is usually Elspeth, in which case it’s ok. Elsbeth looks made up.
I do know a Lisbeth though, which is quite nice.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 18/03/2019 21:28

The Elspeth I know goes by Ellie.

Really sorry but I think it’s the wettest name possible! I’m in the minority though! Good luck with your pregnancy 🤗

aliceandkids77 · 18/03/2019 21:53

cute cute cute! the nn Elsie is gorgeous too! x

Tillygetsit · 18/03/2019 22:55

I love Betty. Very cool

Wandastartup · 18/03/2019 23:00

Barbara from Blackpool snap!

MaryBoBary · 18/03/2019 23:02

Immediately made me think of my mother saying “oh ‘ells bells!” When something went wrong. But apart from that I don’t dislike it.

DramaAlpaca · 18/03/2019 23:04

Sorry, I'm not at all keen on either Elsbeth or Elspeth, and Betty isn't a nice name IMO.

Rattymam · 18/03/2019 23:05

Absolutely gorgeous x

PuzzlingPuzzle · 18/03/2019 23:08

Elsbeth looks made up, a bit ridiculous and like you can’t spell. I like your proposed nicknames though. Why not go for Elizabeth or Elspeth instead?
