Oakley? Too “unusual”?

LaceyB1995 · 17/03/2019 18:31

We’ve chosen our baby boys name, we always wanted something unusual but not weird.

One of my friends has said it’s too unusual and American (even though it’s an old English name). Now I’m slightly second guessing whether it is out-there and not just unusual?

What’s everyone’s opinions on Oakley? Smile

Too sunglasses for me.

Susannach · 17/03/2019 18:35

I’ve met a few. I don’t think it’s too unusual at all. I wouldn’t choose it personally, but it’s s fine name.

BlueMerchant · 17/03/2019 18:35

It's unusual which is what you want but not weird imo. I imagine many will think it's American though.

BuffaloCauliflower · 17/03/2019 18:36

@NunoGoncalves came here to say that

Isth · 17/03/2019 18:36

It’s not unusual I wouldn’t say, I know a couple. Not that keen on naming a baby after sunglasses tho

Orangecake123 · 17/03/2019 18:36

I've seen it used with a little boy. Go for it if you love it!

pollyhampton · 17/03/2019 18:37

It is very popular where I live (south coast). I can think of 4, none of them get any stick about the sunglasses brand!

Babyfoal · 17/03/2019 18:37

I know brothers called Oakley and Bentley. Not for me

UrsulaPandress · 17/03/2019 18:37

Horsebox to me. But nothing wrong with it.

ColdCrumpetsandButter · 17/03/2019 18:38

My instant thoughts are sunglasses or a puppy.

HundredMilesAnHour · 17/03/2019 18:38

Sunglasses to me. I'd assume you were planning another child called Bolle.

LaceyB1995 · 17/03/2019 18:39

Oh no I didn’t know it was a sunglasses company! Shock

Makes me rethink slightly :/ we just loved the fact it linked to nature and was an English name!

I know two. One is an English woman aged about 30, the other is an American toddler but also a girl. I don’t personally like it as it reminds me of skiing goggles but I’d definitely never think of it as a boy’s name.

GetOffTheTableMabel · 17/03/2019 18:40

Honestly, you might as well name him Rayban.

daisypond · 17/03/2019 18:42

I think it's rather nice, but I've never heard of the sunglasses brand.

LaceyB1995 · 17/03/2019 18:43

@daisypond me too! Feel silly as I’ve just googled it and it’s huge apparently! Never been into fashion Blush

I know a few so wouldn’t say it’s unusual. I think it’s the ‘new Ashley’. It makes me think of the sunglasses brand too.

TheFuckfaceWhisperer · 17/03/2019 18:47

I know one who will be about 10 now. It suits him.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 17/03/2019 18:47

Yep sunglasses.

MollyYouInDangerGirl · 17/03/2019 18:47

I think it's ok! I wouldn't choose it personally but dont think it's bad. I wouldn't worry about the sunglasses brand, like you said it was a name before it was a brand x

Eastpoint · 17/03/2019 18:47

Sunglasses or a surname - I’m familiar with both.

slipperywhensparticus · 17/03/2019 18:49

It sounds a nice name but I would never use it I'm a Stephen king fan (it's the name of a baaaad place)

Bonbonchance · 17/03/2019 18:49

I think it’s lovely! A bit unusual but not weird. I know of one boy who’s around 8 or 9, suits him!

iVampire · 17/03/2019 18:49

Sunglasses

And it’s not an old English name. It’s a surname whose meaning comes from a old place name, probably derived from AngloSaxon.
