Woody?

We really like Woody as a able for our baby boy due in July. The kids love the name too. We decided not to tell anyone for fear of negative reaction but my 7 year old told my mum in front of me and her reaction was 'Woody?! That's not even a proper name!' 🙄 It's upset me as I loved it and now I feel silly using it. What do you all think? Our surname starts with W too, I think alliteration is cute but is it too cute? Think, Woody Wilson ..

As a 'name' not able

Woody is a character in Toy story or slang for an erection.

MoeAnna · 17/03/2019 17:50

Just read the 2 W thing.... Just don't.

MakeAWhish · 17/03/2019 17:50

Thanks Moe, you must be in my generation as 'woody' as an erection hasn't been used in about 30 years has it?! 😂

I know a boy called Woody and I think it really suits him! Very unusual. I did think it was a nickname at first though.

MollyYouInDangerGirl · 17/03/2019 17:51

I used to not like it very much but I follow someone on Instagram who has a son called woody and I now actually think it's quite cute! Not sure how well it would fit an older man though?

MakeAWhish · 17/03/2019 17:51

Thanks @Heymummee , we were trying to think of a longer more formal name to shorten to Woody but came up blank!

I'm early 30s and my 12yo son was laughing about 'woody' the other day when we watched the TS4 trailer.

So younger generation do make that joke too.

MakeAWhish · 17/03/2019 17:52

@MollyYouInDangerGirl good point. Something to think about.

insancerre · 17/03/2019 17:52

God, no
It’s cute as a nickname but not as a name for a grown up man

Cazastrophe · 17/03/2019 17:52

You say woody and I think stiffy! Maybe a generational thing.
Zoe Ball’s Dom is called Woody and maybe in the celeb world it’s more palatable but when the kid tries to get a job - who wants to employ a Woody???

BloominSloe · 17/03/2019 17:52

I'm in my 30's. Woody has always been used as a slag term for erection.
It's ok as a nickname for someone with a 'Woody' surname but it's not great as a first name.

SweetbutaPsycho · 17/03/2019 17:52

Sorry but no way. He would be getting teased relentlessly.

MakeAWhish · 17/03/2019 17:53

@MoeAnna it's not a good enough reason for me to discount it, but thanks for the heads up

I know two Woodys, one is an Elwood and the other an Edward. I like it even as a name in itself.

MoeAnna · 17/03/2019 17:53

If your solicitor walked in and said 'Hello I'm Woody Wilson....' what would you think? It's cute for a 2 year old playing cowboy.

A 40 year old man?

Come on. Its ridiculous.

MakeAWhish · 17/03/2019 17:54

Hmm maybe it's a bit too different... back to the drawing board. I honestly didn't think of the erection connection before today 😂
I remember Zoe Ball calling her son it years ago and I hated it! Funny how things change.

GreigLaidlawsbarofsoap · 17/03/2019 17:55

Absurd. It's a toy character or a boner. Poor poor kid, especially in the teenage years he will probably hate you for it 🍆 please don't do that to him.

RoryLeighGilmore · 17/03/2019 17:56

I also think it's perfectly fine for an older man. These people who would apparently walk out of a solicitors office because someone is called Woody rather than something dull like George/Oliver/Daniel are ridiculous.
Especially in 30 years when Woody will be even more mainstream as it's definitely on the rise (you can check the ONS name lists to confirm how many each year).

MakeAWhish · 17/03/2019 17:56

I wouldn't think it was ridiculous, to be honest. I just think it's quite cool. But am happy to be persuaded against it, I don't want to saddle my son with an awkward name.

OP posts:
JuniperNarni · 17/03/2019 17:56

It'll be around the same time as the new toy story film comes out I think, so I'd be prepared for everyone to assume you've named him after a toy cowboy.

MakeAWhish · 17/03/2019 17:57

@RoryLeighGilmore Thank you, I was starting to think I had lost the plot, I still think it's cool for a man or a boy 🤷🏼‍♀️

OP posts:
MakeAWhish · 17/03/2019 17:58

@JuniperNarni that doesn't really bother me either.

MintyCedric · 17/03/2019 18:00

Maybe Edward...the he/you can choose Woody or Ed or Ted or whatever other abbreviation you want.

I like Woody tbh, but I can also see the downside as someone whose original surname had similar connotations Blush

hazandduck · 17/03/2019 18:00

Going against everyone else I LOVE Woody and when I was pregnant it was our second boy’s choice. Would definitely use it. My mum suggested it to us, and MIL loved it too, so don’t think everyone goes straight to ‘boner.’

We ended up having a DD and now thinking of their names together I would probably call a son Edward but ask he not be called Eddie (ick) and tell people his name was Woody for everything but his birth certificate etc.

I also loved the character of Wood in Harry Potter. In my head he was so cool. And of course I love Toy Story!
