Woody?

We really like Woody as a able for our baby boy due in July. The kids love the name too. We decided not to tell anyone for fear of negative reaction but my 7 year old told my mum in front of me and her reaction was 'Woody?! That's not even a proper name!' 🙄 It's upset me as I loved it and now I feel silly using it. What do you all think? Our surname starts with W too, I think alliteration is cute but is it too cute? Think, Woody Wilson ..

Edward?

It says errection to my 18 year old too- I just asked him.

Marylou62 · 17/03/2019 18:02

I know a 6 yr old Woody very well..Never had any negative comments.. And i'm late 50s and never heard of the rude connection..Woody Harleston has never had a problem..personaly I love it.

FattyFatCakes · 17/03/2019 18:02

I love it!

AdaColeman · 17/03/2019 18:03

Heywood and Woodrow are both names that could have Woody for a nn. But the toy cowboy and Woody Allen links put me off TBH.

PixieDust20 · 17/03/2019 18:05

I like it! I think it's quirky and different x

SuziQ10 · 17/03/2019 18:08

Erm. It is slang for a boner. Not what I'd want to my child's name! Haha but each to their own.

MakeAWhish · 17/03/2019 18:08

Thanks everyone for your comments - good and bad! I don't want him to grow up hating his name but I still love it 🙈

Thanks Moe, you must be in my generation as 'woody' as an erection hasn't been used in about 30 years has it?! 😂

Not so - I was behind a group of schoolboys the other day and one was proudly talking about his woody so the definition is still in current use.
Why would you do that to your child?

MakeAWhish · 17/03/2019 18:17

@SilverySurfer cos I'm an arsehole 🤷🏼‍♀️ Keyboard warriors out in force today!

I think Woody is a cool name and I think of the Toy Story character before anything else.

Quite like the suggestion above to use Woodrow as the official name and Woody as nn.

I do like an unusual name though rather than something that's been in the top 20 list of most popular for years ☺️

troppibambini · 17/03/2019 18:23

Some harsh answers on here!
As a nickname fine but he needs a "real" name too in my opinion.
The character in Harry Potter was Oliver Wood his first name wasn't Wood!

MakeAWhish · 17/03/2019 18:28

@troppibambini @mrsk28 Thank you! I think you're right, I need to think of a longer name with Woody as a nn. That way, he can choose.

Contraceptionismyfriend · 17/03/2019 18:28

That's not a name.
Why would you do that to a child? That child will become an adult and have to tell people that name!

Amber0685 · 17/03/2019 18:29

My friend is Edward, gets woody for short

Tonsilss · 17/03/2019 18:30

Woodrow, with Woody for short?

catdogcatdog · 17/03/2019 18:49

I know 2! One is just Woody and is a grown man- it suits him and he is terribly cool.
And the other is an Edward, which is shortened.

I'd be inclined to shorten Edward, but I think Woody is a great name!

Sophronia · 17/03/2019 18:51

Edward or Woodrow nn Woody is better.

Fair enough - can't argue with that Grin

MakeAWhish · 17/03/2019 19:15

By the way, it's perfectly possible to say you don't like a name without resorting to rudeness. I know it's a devisive name, but there's no need for some of the comments. But thank you, for worrying about the welfare of my future DS. Most kind.

@catdogcatdog Thank you, great to hear you know an adult Woody! I assume he doesn't hate his mother for calling him it. I think Edward or Elwood is a gold option, with Woody as a nn. Thanks all for helping me clarify!

Love love love it

Never ask for opinions on here about names.........!!!

MakeAWhish · 17/03/2019 19:22

@thinkingcapon 😂 I've learnt my lesson! Thank you ❤️

Woodrow Wilson was an American president!

So it could be shortened to Woody.

However, it does shriek of "erection" to me. And then there's the Toy Story thing as well. So....

thinkingcapon · 17/03/2019 19:25

See what I mean op?! Quit while you're ahead or else you'll start mindfucking yourself!
