Sarah

What do you think?
Too dated? Overused? Bland?

Or timeless classic, due a revival, classy, elegant?

I prefer the Sarah pronounciation and spelling to Sara.

My other option is Zara or perhaps even Lara....sense a theme going on!

Which do you prefer?

Thanks in advance

Sarah is beautiful.

Tavannach · 16/03/2019 00:22

Too dated.
Zara and Sara are lovely.

RoseMartha · 16/03/2019 00:35

I like it

MollyHuaCha · 16/03/2019 00:46

Love it.

babyno5 · 16/03/2019 00:59

It's a no from me. But that's only because my DP's batshit crazy ex wife is called this and I fucking hate her!! 😂 waves because she's probably reading this!!

GlitterPixie · 16/03/2019 01:17

My favourite name

HouseOfToys · 16/03/2019 01:23

It's my name. I've never liked it because I'm mid 30's and every class in school had at least 3 other Sarah's. It was tedious.

Although now I'm older I appreciate a classic name.

But please don't mess with the pronunciations. That gets so frustrating.

Without an H rhymes with Zara.
With an H ryhmes with Fairer.

PinkieTuscadero · 16/03/2019 01:32

Fine but boring.

YouBumder · 16/03/2019 01:42

Love it and underused these days

LaurenOrdering · 16/03/2019 02:01

If you use Sara never ever pronounce it Sarah! One of my friends is a Sara & it is pronounced as it sounds Saar-ra like Zara is pronounced Zaar-ra.
It drives my friend around the bend when people mispronounce her name & call her Sarah instead of Sara.
It's a bit like being called Lisa & should be pronounced as Lee-sa but everyone calls you Lee-za!
Personally speaking I love the names Sara & Zara but dislike Sarah as it's so boring & fuddy duddy.

PinkieTuscadero · 16/03/2019 02:07

My cousin is a Sara and she pronounces it the same way as Sarah.

LaurenOrdering · 16/03/2019 02:56

I really don't understand why people mispronounce Sara as Sarah?
It's Sa as in Ha and Ra in Ra.
If you going to pronounce Sara as Ser-rah/Sair-rah then spell it as Serah/Sairah/Sarah In fact spell the name Sarah as Serah/Sairah.
No one (that I know of) pronounces Zara as Zerah/Zairah, Cara as Cerah/Cairah, Tara as Terah/Tairah or even Lara as Lerah/Lairah so why the fs do people pronounce Sara so wrong!
It's pronounced SAAR-A / SAAR-RA
Can you tell I get a bit annoyed & it's not even my name.

Pemba · 16/03/2019 04:06

Nope sorry you are wrong Lauren, and a bit ignorant really. Sara can either be pronounced to rhyme with Lara and Zara, or pronounced the same as Sarah. This is not unique to the OP. Ever seen the 1995 kids' film 'A Little Princess'? It's based on the classic children's book. The main character is Sara Crewe, pronounced Sarah.

Ever heard of the comedian Sara Pascoe (she's frequently on TV), and the Radio 2 DJ Sara Cox? Both are pronounced same as Sarah.
So yes, it's a thing, and probably older than the pronunciation 'Sah-ra'.

Pemba · 16/03/2019 04:17

Plus the Fleetwood Mac song 'Sara' pronounced ... Sarah.

Newsflash, names can have more than one pronunciation, just like they often have more than one spelling. Let your friend know and tell her not to get so worked up!

Sarah22xx · 16/03/2019 05:01

I'm a sarah ;) almost 24, there was loads I them at my school in my year but you never really hear it now tbh. Personally I love zara for a name x

HeronLanyon · 16/03/2019 05:17

Love Sarah.
Zara and Lara less so but only because they are less classic (in UK) and I wonder if they will seem dated in future? If that doesn’t worry you then go for it.
Sarah - underused at present. Less ‘classic’ than many names - all round I really like it.

Carrotsticksandhummus · 16/03/2019 07:03

Hi all,
Thanks for your input.

I think Sara/sarah is more popular in young girls in other European countries.
I do love how it’s so versitile and translates perfectly worldwide.

I’m now thinking the Sarah spelling is less confusing.

However after speaking to DH he likes the name but thinks it’s really unimaginative. He prefers Zara.

What’s confusing me, is that I’m never one to follow “fashion” or “trends” because I know they will date. I much prefer “boring” timeless classics, because they always sound elegant.

I thought I had found that with Zara (or even Lara). But now I’m second guessing myself. I told my mother yesterday I was contemplating Sarah and she was horrified at such a religious/boring name!

I’ve got a few weeks left, so will mull it over.

OutwithMyRemit · 16/03/2019 07:07

Just to confuse you further, I have a friend called Zahra which I love. Iirc it means Rose in Arabic.

LaurenOrdering · 16/03/2019 09:17

Yes I know everyone pronounces their name differently but always remember to use the right pronounciation for that person.
You wouldn't repeatedly call someone Eve if they're name is Eva.
And yes it does happen because people don't listen.
Drives my friend mad!

LaurenOrdering · 16/03/2019 09:19

And I'm not ignorant so don't be so rude or did you mean to be, tilts head.

ShadowsInTheDarkness · 16/03/2019 09:23

I have a Sarah Elizabeth too! Its a lovely name, timeless and classic. Mine sometimes gets called "Essie" as a nickname which I also love.

PinkieTuscadero · 16/03/2019 11:35

And I'm not ignorant so don't be so rude or did you mean to be, tilts head.

To be fair you did have a bit of a weird rant that people should only pronounce Sara in the way that your 'friend' thinks they should.

LaurenOrdering · 16/03/2019 11:56

Yes I did to be fair it's just that she gets so annoyed when people don't pronounce her name correctly.

haverhill · 16/03/2019 11:58

I’m 48 and have 3 friends called Sarah, but it’s now relatively rare. I like it.

pineapplebryanbrown · 16/03/2019 12:07

I love it, how about good old Sarah Jane? I hate Zara and Lara should be Laura imo.
