For a girl. Or do you like Flossy?

Pippa is short for Philippa and Flossy is short for Florence...

Pippa is slightly less twee and infantile than Flossy as a stand alone name, if you really have to give your child an infantile diminutive half name instead of a full name with the choice of using a nickname...

TeenTimesTwo · 15/03/2019 07:18

I would formally name Philippa (and check whether ll is more normal, I can't work it out) or Florence.

Pippa and Flossy are all very well for a cute 3 yo but not so adaptable for different situations in adult life.

Joeybee · 15/03/2019 07:18

Love the name Pippa - it sounds summer-y and fresh and yet familiar. I imagine a beachy, happy girl called Pippa. It also sounds very Australian. In fact I live in Australia and know of a few people who've called their daughters Pippa.

x-post!

Cbeebiesrehab · 15/03/2019 07:51

Pippa is very popular in my area at the moment! There are four in the baby groups I attend (which is only two groups)

sonlypuppyfat · 15/03/2019 07:54

Flossy? For real?

Dontrocktheboat · 15/03/2019 07:55

I don’t mind Pippa, but whenever it has been mentioned before on similar threads someone has commented it means something obscene in Greek! (If that’s an issue for you!)

SoftBlocks · 15/03/2019 07:56

Ok if it’s short for Philippa but not on its own.

LaMarschallin · 15/03/2019 07:56

A lot of feelings about names can be due to personal associations, can't they?
I like Pippa. Had Pippa dolls as a child (dates me) so grew up feeling it was pretty fashionable. Now I know a 60 year old Pippa and it suits her so, for me, the name spans generations.
Otoh, I've only known a dog called Floss - sometimes Flossy - so wouldn't choose that myself.

Shakirasma · 15/03/2019 07:59

My DHs granny was called Florrie. I think that is much nicer than Flossy.

BarkandCheese · 15/03/2019 08:03

I think Pippa is okay as a stand alone name, it’s similar in sound to complete names like Emma or Cara, however Flossy is too much of a cute nickname on its own. I’m pretty sure it’s just my family rather than a known thing, but if someone if faffing around they get told “hurry up Flossy” regardless of gender.

elasticfantastic · 15/03/2019 08:07

Flossy? Only suitable for a pet rabbit.

lottiegarbanzo · 15/03/2019 08:11

Nice.

I dislike Philip, so not keen on Philippa per se but Pippa is very nice.

Flossy / Florence is nice too.

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 15/03/2019 08:13

Pippa (if short for Philippa) is a lovely name but as a pp said is on its way to becoming very popular - I know two baby Pippas just among my immediate friendship group

pink412 · 15/03/2019 08:19

Pippa is a lovely name but I would also check what it means in other languages ;)

HoHoHolittlepea · 15/03/2019 08:20

Flossy is a poodles name.
Pippa is cute, and works as a grown up, only prob is the meaning in some languages.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 15/03/2019 09:46

I don't like it. In some languages its slag for Blow Job. Not for that reason. I just don't like the sound of it.
Flossie is far too twee. I agree Florrie is nicer and a more suitable nn for Florence.

aliceandkids77 · 15/03/2019 10:25

As someone mentioned I think both Pippa and Flossie as nicknames for Philippa and Florence. I prefer Pippa to Flossie but Florence to Philippa. Good luck x

daisypond · 15/03/2019 10:27

Pippa is ok but Flossie is far too cutesy.

MercyBodle · 15/03/2019 11:42

I really like Pippa. I'm not so keen on Flossie, but it's okay as nn for Florence.

RuthW · 15/03/2019 12:46

As others said. Even my 22 year i
Old Florence is too old for Flossie. She's a Floss or Flo.

Susannach · 15/03/2019 12:53

I love Pippa, but was put off using it by the rude meanings in other languages.

Flossy is far too cutesy and twee for a full name. Fine as a childhood nickname for Florence or Felicity though.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 15/03/2019 13:01

Flossie makes me think of dental floss.

Arowana · 15/03/2019 13:06

I really like Pippa. Both the Pippas I know (one adult and one 13yo) are just called Pippa, not short for anything.

Not keen on Flossy. It's a sheep's name!

lunicorn · 15/03/2019 13:09

I quite like it. I know some nice Pippas. The word sounds a bit prissy/twee to say though.
