Sibling names starting with the same letter?

I always said I wouldn't but absolutely adore a name that starts with the same letter as DC1? Thoughts? Is it chavvy?

I think it depends on the names themselves and how similar they sound. Could you tell us what they are?

foxtiger · 14/03/2019 21:22

I don't see it as chavvy at all (unless you have 26 children who all begin with the same letter, and take liberties with spellings to make all the names fit the pattern), but I wouldn't do it myself for practical reasons - letters being opened by the wrong person, etc.

MadameJosephine · 14/03/2019 21:25

Why would it be ‘chavvy’?

I have the same first initial as my brother and so do both my children.

Watto1 · 14/03/2019 21:26

If the dc are of different sexes, then I’d say go for it. If they are both the same sex, you may have problems when they are older and get post. Eg Which Mr R Meadow is this for?

BikeRunSki · 14/03/2019 21:33

My brother and I have the same initials (and obviously same surname growing up).

DH, DD and I all have the same first 2 initials and surname.

It really is not a problem. Never has been. The post children get is minimal; it’s usually just birthday cards.

SmallIslandLass · 14/03/2019 21:35

Never bothered me and my brother though we did often open each others post by mistake

3boysandabump · 14/03/2019 21:37

2 of my sons have the same initial. Didn't really think about it tbh. Post isn't usually addressed to initial and surname these days it's first name surname so that shouldn't be an issue.

Barbarafromblackpool · 14/03/2019 21:42

I think as long as you avoid K, you're fine.

bridgetreilly · 14/03/2019 21:51

I think it's fine so long as they (a) actually are spelled like that, so you haven't just changed it to match (like Khloe) and (b) don't rhyme or match in some other way as well.

DramaAlpaca · 14/03/2019 21:58

I'll overlook the use of the thoroughly unpleasant term 'chavvy' & say that I think it's fine as long as the names in question aren't too matchy.

DidYeeAye · 14/03/2019 22:04

I think 2 siblings with the same initial is fine but more than that is a but naff. I know a woman with 4 kids all begining with C... It's a bit corny imo

PlasticPatty · 14/03/2019 22:05

Me and brother. Didn't like it as children, don't mind it now, sixty years later.

Bigonesmallone3 · 14/03/2019 22:15

I don't see how that would be chavvy

MumUnderTheMoon · 14/03/2019 23:20

I don't like it myself. It feels like they're a "set" it's even worse when one or both of the parents also have the same initial.

timeisnotaline · 14/03/2019 23:22

My two do , they were the names we liked. I am fine with it but won’t do the same with a third, that’s too much for me!

CloserIAm2Fine · 14/03/2019 23:34

I don’t think it’s neccessarily chavvy, I’m not a fan though and I do think it’s a bit tacky

Ouchmytoe · 15/03/2019 02:35

I'm keen to name baby number 2 something that begins with a different letter to baby number 1, just because I'm worried that one day there might be a baby number 3 and this would be a problem because:

  1. while two kids with the same name could sound either cute or accidental (Rory and Rose, for example) 3 would sound planned, OTT and maybe even a bit naff (Rory, Rose and Ramona - overkill?)
  2. what if I can't find a name I like beginning with the same letter for baby number 3, so they're named something different? (Rory, Rose and Kate, for example. Wouldn't you feel a bit sorry for yourself if you were Kate?) I feel like it's the kind of thing that would bother a child. Or am I overthinking it?

(Thought about this a lot as I have a name for baby number 2 that I love but am unsure about as it begins with the same letter as baby number 1!)

ElizabethMainwaring · 15/03/2019 03:02

Saying chavvy is a bit chavvy.

RiverMeadow · 15/03/2019 06:11

Sorry maybe chavvy was the wrong word to use! I was meaning slightly tacky.

Bluelonerose · 15/03/2019 06:22

They're your dc name them what you like.
I know someone who has 4 dc all beginning with the same letter I also know someone (possibly more than 1 but this one springs to mind) who has first 2 with same letter initials and her other 2dc have completly different ones.

Me personally wouldn't go out of my way to pick a name starting with the same letter but if they just so happened to have the same initial coz I like the name I don't see the issue.

Arowana · 15/03/2019 06:24

I wouldn’t personally as I don’t like the way it sounds. It’s up to you though!

FenellaMaxwell · 15/03/2019 06:27

Depends on the names. Theodore and Tamsin would be fine but Lulu and Luca sounds stupid....

ChoccyBiccyTastic · 15/03/2019 06:39

I don't think it gets weird until the endings are matchy too. Nothing wrong with Aaron and Amelia or Toby and Tristan.
Tilly, Tommy & Toby is a bit naff.

WatchingTheWheels85 · 15/03/2019 06:43

I know someone with six children all beginning with L. Someone else with four children beginning with K.

SnuggyBuggy · 15/03/2019 06:50

It don't think it's necessarily chavvy but the post issue is something to consider. A different middle name would help.
