Is this chavvy?

Hi ladies,

I am expecting my second daughter.
I haven’t shared with family or friends by chosen baby name, but decided to tell my work colleagues as they don’t mix with my family or friends.

One colleague mentioned something about my baby name that’s really affected me, and makes me want to change it.

The name is Amelie.

I’ve liked the name since I was young.

The colleague said it was a faddy name because it comes from a movie and that it’s chavvy where she’s from!?

Is it really chavvy?? This point really makes me want think of a new name.

I don’t understand why names from movies are faddy... Aurora from sleeping beauty is still popular. And Lara from Lara Croft isn’t “faddy”. And both Aurora and Lara aren’t chavvy...are they?

Is Amelie chavvy to you?

Thanks

I think its lovely

BeGoodTanya · 14/03/2019 08:38

It’s not a term I would use, not being a horrific snob, but no, I do not think that Amelie has any particular class connotations. (And the name from the —cutesy and irritating— film is Amélie, with an acute accent, anyway.)

LuluBellaBlue · 14/03/2019 08:44

I love the name and think it’s beautiful, ignore your silly colleague who should have the decency to not be so disrespectful

Beamur · 14/03/2019 08:47

The film was popular ages ago.
It's a sweet name, very popular in certain places - fairly common where I live, but not what I would say a 'chavvy' name (which is a pretty horrible thing to say anyway)

EntirelyAnonymised · 14/03/2019 08:51

The film was 18 years ago!

The name is pretty

Ontopofthesunset · 14/03/2019 08:53

I think it's because it's a French version of an English name (Amelia) that suddenly became popular after the film, and was then used by lots of people with no French connections. It was never a name widely used in this country before the film, so it's a little like using Philippe instead of Philip but not being French. I don't think it really matters but that's why people say it's faddy. To be honest I think that's why people say Aurora is faddy too - it's not a name that was widely used before the film. I think Lara is a name that has been used much more widely and I knew people called Lara when I was a child 40 years ago.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 14/03/2019 08:56

It's not a classic name in the UK, I think that's the problem. I don't think it's chavvy exactly but it's definitely not elegant.

Acaibowl · 14/03/2019 08:59

Sorry just wanted to add. I feel that Aurora and Lara are both not “classic” names but I do see them as elegant..
For me I thought Amelie was elegant because it has regal connotations also.

It's not 'chavvy' at all. What sort of person says that when someone tells them a possible baby name? Unless someone is thinking of a name that will cause the child problems I always say that's a lovely name and leave them to it.

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 14/03/2019 09:01

Agree with Ontopofthesunset.

It’s similar to how I’d assume someone who called their dd Hermione was into Harry Potter. Neither were common in the UK before the films/books kicked off.

But I definitely wouldn’t say it was “chavvy”.

Walkmehome · 14/03/2019 09:06

I think it’s lovely and I have never met one.

Atalune · 14/03/2019 09:08

Very popular and at least one /2 in every class.

Pretty though.

Janus · 14/03/2019 09:10

I think it’s beautiful (I must also live under a rock as I’ve never heard of the film Amelie!!). Definitely not chavvy to me.

TildaTurnip · 14/03/2019 09:10

It’s become more popular where I live in recent years, which is a long time after the film. I think it is cutesy and so similar to the hundreds of babies called Emily, Amelia, Emilia etc but no negative connotations.

Fraula · 14/03/2019 09:12

Lovely name. Not chavvy!

Jamct23 · 14/03/2019 09:12

Love the name Amalie, I wouldn’t of even classed the name anywhere near chavvy? Infact id say it’s the opposite x

MaidofLemonade · 14/03/2019 09:14

I don't think it is 'chavvy' but I do feel it is trendy and popularised by the film. If you want something elegant and not trendy I would have another think.

MyKingdomForBrie · 14/03/2019 09:14

Lovely name and I've never met one. Lots of Amelia's (which I like a lot less!)

steakandcakes · 14/03/2019 09:18

I really dislike the name.

BlackPrism · 14/03/2019 09:18

Of course not, it's my middle name and I was born in the 90s (biased maybe) people complement it often. If you're put off what about Emilia?

Barrenfieldoffucks · 14/03/2019 09:19

It isn't chavvy but it isn't classy either IMO, not that that matters. It's very pretty, but one of a number of very common variants

PodgeBod · 14/03/2019 09:20

No, definitely not chavvy and I dont think of the film. I've only met one when my DD1 was a baby, none in our nursery so not popular round here.

chipsandgin · 14/03/2019 09:29

Lovely name & the only people I know who have used the name are titled! Not chavvy (& I know there is an uproar on here every time the term chav is used - I don’t agree with the English class system either but denying it exists is pointless & there are apparently no acceptable ways of describing it so you can’t win!).

Tbh had thought you’d be asking about a ‘yoonique’ or misspelled name, which always have those connotations & Amelie isn’t either of those. Ignore the colleague & learn to never discuss names IRL except with your partner, never ends well!!

Moanymoaner123 · 14/03/2019 09:37

I think it's the -ie ending that may make people think 'chavvy', cutesy girly names or first name hyphenated with mae. Also using a French/foreign name if you have no connection speaks of pretentions of grandeur to some.

ketchupormayo · 14/03/2019 09:44

Amelie is what I want for my baby! I love it so much. Husbands family are v posh and all love it too
