Name paranoia

I'm not 100% on the names we've decided on, but neither me nor my DH will have each other's first choices (Florence or Olivia).

He has always wanted Rosie so I've said that I would go for that because I think it's a pretty name, we can't agree on anything else and I just hope I'd come to love it.

We haven't told anyone this name but at work, people have been giving me suggestion upon suggestion. Yesterday someone suggested Rosie by coincidence... our surname starts with an R and has two S's in it.
A couple of them laughed, with comments such as 'imagine calling it that', 'god that's a definite no' and 'what a mouthful'.

My DH was so happy that we'd come to a decision, and now I'm so paranoid about the name!

Is it really that bad?

Rosie Russell? I think it's great actually.

Quintella · 26/02/2019 20:30

Something like Rosie Rossiter? I probably wouldn't but it's not awful.

Quintella · 26/02/2019 20:31

It is cute in a storybook character kind of way but I'm not sure I'd want that beyond childhood.

mistermagpie · 26/02/2019 20:34

My son has a name a bit like that. I honestly didn't put two and two together until he was about six months (I have a different surname to him, so maybe that's why...) but I actually like it now! People don't really think as much about these things as we do as parents, most people probably won't notice.

FWIW my second son has a name that lots of people suggested and then went 'ugh no I don't like it', but he suits is so much and I love it anyway.

DramaAlpaca · 26/02/2019 20:34

If it's Rossiter it would be a no from me. That would be a bit too much.

SPR1107 · 26/02/2019 20:36

If I love Florence and Myla and husband loves Olivia and Amelia, and we both like Rosie (not rose, Rosanna etc)... what else might we like?

Or how do I trick my husband in to going with Florence.......

You were closer to the mark @DramaAlpaca

What about Rosanna or something to break it up? Rosie then for short.

Marlena1 · 26/02/2019 20:41

Sorry just saw your update!

Susannach · 26/02/2019 20:51

I think it’s absolutely fine

NuffSaidSam · 26/02/2019 20:52

It's funny that you can't agree because I would put Florence and Olivia in exactly the same category.

What do you not like about Olivia and what does he not like about Florence?

Myla and Amelia are very similar sounding too!

Rtmhwales · 26/02/2019 20:53

Sounds fine to me, even if it is Rossiter.

I'm with your husband though, Florence is not a name I'd want to give my child.

ATailofTwoKitties · 26/02/2019 20:54

The Florences and Olivias that we know have sisters called Verity, Tamsin and Isabella, if that helps at all.

MadameJosephine · 26/02/2019 20:55

How about a longer version with Rosie as a nn? I work with a Rosie whose full name is Rosemary or you could have Rosalind, Rozina or Roseanne?

PeanutButterIsOneWord · 26/02/2019 20:58

Do it! It's like a superhero alter ego.

Jessabean · 26/02/2019 21:28

It depends on the surname really but alliterations I think can be quite cute.
How long is the surname? As others have said might it work better with a longer name and Rosie as a nn?

If you like Florence Rosie and Olivia maybe Flora? Harriet? Beatrice? Edith? Elsie? Iris? Eloise? Fleur? Sophia? Grace? Poppy? Maisie? Pippa?

LauraPalmersBodybag · 26/02/2019 21:42

I have a name like that....I love it! I’ve had superhero and PI comments, always in a nice friendly way and I love the alliteration.

RuthW · 27/02/2019 06:22

My dd is Florence. If your surname is Ross then Rosie Ross doesn't go but Florence Ross is even worse.

The person who said Florence and Olivia are the same sort of names, I don't think they are as I loath Olivia.

Shadow1234 · 27/02/2019 06:44

First off, I dont think you should go for a name unless you both really love it, and I don't think you can make your husband like Florence if he really isn't keen. If you are not hundred per cent on Rosie, then I would keep searching until you are both happy with the final decision.

What about..

Amelie
Hannah
Lorna
Lana
Hailey
Lucy
Nancy
Evelyn
Laura
Alice
Lydia

Divgirl2 · 27/02/2019 06:52

My sister is a Rosie, but it's short for Róisín. Names with a similar feel to Rosie but which aren't a million miles from your other names...
Molly. Susie. Ruth (Ruthie). Katie. Ruby. Millie. Pippa. Libby. Zara. Freya.

MercyBodle · 27/02/2019 07:09

Sure, alliterations can be cute - but I grew up with one and couldn't wait to change my name. Cute for other people I think... or extroverts. I really do think they can sound good, and I like Rosie, but based on my experience I can't recommend it.

Just have an honest talk with DH. Tell him you don't love it, and are concerned that it may not work with surname. Maybe you have to keep working to find another name you can both agree with. Maybe one of your loves will grow on him, especially after he sees you in labour. I do think in the end you both need to love, or be happy enough, with the name.

NuffSaidSam · 27/02/2019 09:42

'The person who said Florence and Olivia are the same sort of names, I don't think they are as I loath Olivia'

Why? Is it the sound? Because they don't sound similar at all, but culturally (I don't think that's the right word, but hopefully you know what I mean!) I think they're in the same group!

It's interesting how the same name can provoke such different reactions! It's for the best otherwise we'd all have DC with the same name.

I don't have an Olivia or a Florence, but I really like both names.

Disfordarkchocolate · 27/02/2019 09:46

I think it sounds fine, I love an alliterative name they make me smile (handy as I have one). Some of your colleagues are rude.

Mrssnowflake · 27/02/2019 12:54

I know a little Florence with nn Flossie...sounds a bit like Rosie? Would DH go for that?

LetsSplashMummy · 27/02/2019 13:39

I'd find it hard to go with that name after the conversation, sorry, but it doesn't sound like you really like Rosie anyway. I'd also try and steer any conversations away from this topic in future as people are much more brutal about theoretical baby names than ones they are presented with as fact.

I think there must be a good solution somewhere between Myla and Amelia - I know an Emilia who goes by Mila, for example. Then there is Maya, Amelie, Emme, even Emma, that are close to both.

Otherwise, maybe Josephine with either Posie or Josie as a nn - both similar to Rosie without the alliteration?
