Favorite Greek names for a girl!

Greek names are beautiful, but it's so hard to find one that can actually work for a person in real life. It's not like I can name a kid Aphrodite or Nereida, even if I really want to :( (If there are actually parents out here that named their kid that, then you're AWESOME and have my full respect)

So anyway, are there any Greek girl names that can actually be used on a girl? I'm thinking of Thalia right now, cuz I think it looks so pretty and sounds elegant as well, but I'm up to suggestions😍

I know or have known people with all these names. I promise real people do have these names - including Aphroditi. I guess it's just a bit odd hearing some of them outside of Greece.

Anemone. I love this flower. In mythology it sprang from Aphrodites tears when she mourned the death of Adonis. Meant to bring luck.

I think the easiest to spell and pronounce are Hebe and Phoebe

Twelve8Ts · 26/02/2019 14:58

When on holiday in Paphos last summer, met a female whose name was Eftychia. It was pronounced Ef - ti - hia, and she was called Effie for short. I really liked this, but maybe not to everyone's taste. Meant 'happiness'
Otherwise,
Melina, Adriana, Elena

Please no @GookledyGobb that is a terrible suggestion.

Please do check the meanings of names and the stories of all these people before choosing.

Anthia
Nefeli
Miro
Iro
Cleo

My daughter is called Iola. In Greece it would be pronounced iyola, over here people say eyeola, but I don't mind as I think it works either way

CadburysTastesVileNow · 26/02/2019 16:18

Lalage

(Lal-ahd-gee)
(to chatter or babble)

GookledyGobb · 26/02/2019 16:26

@PBobs isn’t it the goddess of childbirth? It means to help or something?

Smoliver · 26/02/2019 16:29

I really like Thalia - that was a strong contender for me at one point. Other Greek names I like for girls include Xanthe, Calliope, Maia and Athena.

Whether I'll ever be brave enough to use these names is another matter! Grin

Also, here's a couple of lists I found which I thought were interesting - www.britishbabynames.com/blog/2011/06/nymphs.html

I love Anastasia - but pronounced the Greek way rather than the "English" way.

PBobs · 26/02/2019 17:04

@GookledyGobb yes. Spot on. That is one variation of her name but chances are it will be mispronounced by English speakers and then it actually means "stupid woman". As in that is what you would call a woman if she was being stupid.

anxiousmotherof1 · 26/02/2019 17:06

@GookledyGobb ilythia in greek means stupid .

anxiousmotherof1 · 26/02/2019 17:07

@CadburysTastesVileNow i am greek never heard of lalage

PBobs · 26/02/2019 17:43

@anxiousmotherof1 I think from the origin "lalai" but I too didn't know it was a name.

There are a few names I wouldn't use on here though. There's a reason (for example) why they chose Circe for the rather unpleasant queen character in GoT.

Booboostwo · 26/02/2019 20:20

Also Greek and ilythia means stupid and never heard of Lalage either.

Wickeswench · 26/02/2019 20:26

Despina

So so beautiful!

Ploppymoodypants · 26/02/2019 20:32
