Evangeline? Is it TOO much

My husband and I really like the name Evangeline and it is the first girls name we have both really loved this time round (due in a few months)

I am concerned that as a name it is just TOO flouncy- if you know what I mean? I am dreading telling our parents and getting the dredded eye roll or uncomfortable silence that could ensue.

I love how it sounds and the very wide variety of nicknames that can be used with it as well.

I'm not sure why I feel so self conscious of it as a name because DH and I really like it, maybe I am over thinking things?

Our DD1 is called Rose for context!

I know an Evangeline and as PPs have said, she is known as Evie most of the time, but she does still use her full name. I think it's a beautiful name and it gives possibility for a number of different diminutives

MelinaM · 09/02/2019 09:07

I love it, I’ve a friend named Evangeline, always been known as Evie - would that bother you?

diddl · 09/02/2019 09:47

I'd feel really shortchanged if I was Rose & my sibling Evangeline!

daisypond · 09/02/2019 09:49

I'd feel shortchanged the other way round, Diddl! Rose is a million times nicer and classier than Evangeline.

Spidz · 09/02/2019 09:50

Fabulous name.

Love Evie for short too

3in4years · 09/02/2019 09:51

Too religious for me too.

pineapplebryanbrown · 09/02/2019 09:59

I have a short sweet name and i love it. My sisters have long names and loathe them and both changed their names as adults. I don't think you have to think of the other siblings name when choosing.

sue51 · 09/02/2019 10:02

Lovely name. Could be shortened to Eva too.

SubparOwl · 09/02/2019 10:03

It was in my top choices for girls, though I had all boys in the end. It's lovely.

Bubastes · 09/02/2019 12:25

I'd feel really shortchanged if I was Rose & my sibling Evangeline!

I wouldn't!

MikeUniformMike · 09/02/2019 13:59

I don't like it.

DramaAlpaca · 09/02/2019 16:35

I love it. It's long but not fussy or frilly.

Ihuntmonsters · 09/02/2019 18:49

I don't like Evangeline. Makes me think of Nurse Matilda/Nanny McPhee where Evangeline was the scullery maid was adopted by Great Aunt Adelaide.

I'm not one for matchy names, but Rose and Evangeline are really very different. If Vivi appeals how about Vivian which is I think very elegant?

Cookit · 09/02/2019 18:57

I like it.

I don’t see how it’s any “bigger” a name than Elizabeth say, it’s just that everyone is used to that name.

SardineJam · 09/02/2019 19:03

There is an Evangeline at DS' school - love Vivi as a nickname

Ploppymoodypants · 09/02/2019 19:51

Love it! Beautiful name and many non opportunities
Evie
Eva
Angie
Vie

TrixieFranklin · 09/02/2019 19:59

It's beautiful OP Thanks

Look how she lights up the sky
Ma belle Evangeline
So far above me yet I know her heart belongs to only me
Je t'adore, je t'aime Evangeline

You're my queen of the night, so still, so bright
That someone as beautiful as she
Could love someone like me
Love always finds a way, it's true
And I love you, Evangeline

Love is beautiful, love is wonderful
Love is everything, do you agree?
Mais oui

Look how she lights up the sky
I love you, Evangeline

Emelene · 09/02/2019 20:31

I like it too. I also like Evelina. Smile

MsTSwift · 09/02/2019 20:34

My worry would be she will end up another eve / Evie. It’s inevitable. This is a perfectly nice name but insanely popular it’s this generations Sarah. Most of dds friend are called eve. For this reason I wound definitely avoid your choice

3boysandabump · 09/02/2019 20:45

I love it

TatianaLarina · 10/02/2019 12:51

Too many Evies in the world and Evangeline sounds like vagina.

What about Iris to go with Rose.

MsTSwift · 10/02/2019 20:39

Seriously eve as a name is officially full.

beeRB · 11/02/2019 09:43

If the child does grow up and wants to be called Evie then that is their choice it wont bother me that it is a "popular" name.

DH and I will choose the nickname we prefer (either Eve or Vivi- TBC) but having a popular name isn't the end of the world- I have a very popular name for my generation and it has never been an issue for me.

I have no interest in naming DD number 2 after another flower (e.g. Iris) and I don't particularly care if names match so the differences between Rose and Evangeline are irrelevant to me.

My main concern was that it was too fussy- the general consensus seems to be 'it's not too fussy' so I will leave the thread there and am unlikely to return. I may update when DD has been born but it is not pleasant to see a name that you love being compared to Vagina Grin

The singer Brandi Carlile has a a daughter called Evangeline. Look for the song 'The Mother'. It has the line 'I am the mother of Evangeline', and it made me cry when I first heard it. It was live though, so I may not have been so emotional otherwise. I hope. Anyway, such a pretty name. Classic and different.

Ontopofthesunset · 11/02/2019 09:51

I think it is a bit frilly but my main concern is I don't like the 'evangelise'/'evangelical' associations. It sounds a big religous to me.
