We’re considering Stirling as a name for our boy when he arrives. Would love some anonymous opinions on it.

No, that would be sterling Grin

As in Stirling Castle I presume.

MrsMoastyToasty · 05/02/2019 19:51

It was on our short list. DH is a F1 fan and is also Scottish. We also considered Ross (Braun) and Murray (Walker).

HettyStThomas · 05/02/2019 19:52

I've taught a Stirling. Lovely young man. I like the name.

mimibunz · 05/02/2019 19:52

Are you American? I think the child would get ridiculed unless you are rich and planning to send the child to a posh school.

GrungeSponge · 05/02/2019 19:52

I love it.

MrsJDornan · 05/02/2019 19:58

I actually really like it

GemmeFatale · 05/02/2019 20:02

Actually from those first responses it’s not as marmite as I feared.

Yes as in Stirling Moss no not as in Pounds Sterling Grin

Mimibunz, no not American but we lived there for a while and might go back for a few more years at some stage. I didn’t actually consider it an American type name but maybe it has that feel to others?

MrsMT love your shortlist

It’s not to my taste but it’s a perfectly ok choice of name. It’s unusual but not younique. Wink Grin

Disfordarkchocolate · 05/02/2019 20:05

TheWaiting · 05/02/2019 20:06

Grin Grin Grin

museumum · 05/02/2019 20:06

Feels odd to me but we’re only an hour from Stirling. Are you in England?
I like the names lewis and Harris but wouldn’t use either if we actually lived there 😂

JustLurkingAway · 05/02/2019 20:07

Stirling Moss!

GemmeFatale · 05/02/2019 20:11

Museumum England based for the moment. Strangely I floated Harris weeks ago but DH vetoed it. Maybe I just have a fondness for Scottish place names?

Love it! There's an actress called Stirling Gallagher & I always lived her name

ColdCottage · 05/02/2019 20:14

Maybe if you were American you'd get away with it. I'm not a fan. Sorry.

Shadow1234 · 05/02/2019 20:23

I really like it. My only concern would be the name getting shortened by other children at school - would it become Stir or Stirl? This is the only thing that would make me think twice. (but the full name is lovely).

Namelesswonder · 05/02/2019 20:27

Sorry, Stirling to me is a place so as a name it’s too try hard. Might as well call them Glasgow!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 05/02/2019 20:30

jilted that would be Sterling

Oh yeah. It seems what little spelling ability I had has decided to fly out of the window and desert me.

I'll get me coat...Grin

GemmeFatale · 05/02/2019 21:05

I should clarify Stirling is a ‘real’ name. German in origin (my paternal family would be delighted if only any of them were still alive to know). So not particularly like using Glasgow; but not unlike using Lewis, Harris, Adelaide, Alexandria or other names that are also places.

Shadow - I’ve wondered the same thing about it being shortened. Especially as my family all use diminutives
