Narrowing Down Girls List.......

heartoftheocean · 03/02/2019 11:09

So rather than narrowing down my girls name list I have been adding more options. To go with brothers Noah and Jacob.

Options are Pippa, Hallie and Matilda.

Matilda is the name I loved when I had my first son. Pippa is a diminutive of fathers name. And Hallie I heard recently and fell in love with it. Thanks.
Which do you prefer and why?

Love Hallie and Matilda.

Hate Pippa - it’s my name and I have always hated it. My mother told me that she had been stuck between Pippa (Philippa) and Lucy. I’ve always wished she picked Lucy.

Lucyloulee · 03/02/2019 11:15

(Hence my MN username...)

I also generally dislike girls’ names that are just boys’ names with ‘-a’, ‘-ina’ or ‘-ette’ added on at the end. I think they’re really ugly and unoriginal.

So Philippa, Martina, Bernadette, Thomasina, Wilhelmina. All hideous in my opinion.

BaronessShirleyWilliams · 03/02/2019 11:20

I would choose Hallie - then your three children all have names with different endings.

No-AH, Hall-IE and Jac-OB.

They feel like similar styles of name but sound completely different, so they can all have their own identity.

daisypond · 03/02/2019 11:30

Hallie doesn't seem to match your other DC names at all - it sticks out like a sore thumb. Holly would be better, but I'm not so keen on that either. I've grown to like Matilda, after not being too keen on it. So probably that. But I quite like Pippa as well.

3in4years · 03/02/2019 11:35

Matilda and Pippa are nice but Tilly is not.

Awrite · 03/02/2019 11:37

I like Matilda the best.

Not keen on either Pippa or Hallie.

glitterbiscuits · 03/02/2019 11:47

I'd be unsure on how to pronounce Hallie. And it looks made up
If dad is called Philip then that rules out Philippa or Pippa

So, Matilda. Tilly is also a good diminutive

BaronessShirleyWilliams · 03/02/2019 11:59

Is your dh called Philip? If so, I would find Philippa/Pippa quite tacky.

BabarKingoftheElephants · 03/02/2019 12:06

Matilda.
Or Hattie rather than Hallie.

MikeUniformMike · 03/02/2019 13:12

Matilda is better matched to the siblings, in that they are all very popular names.
Philippa/Pippa is nice.
I don't like Hallie.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 03/02/2019 13:16

Hallie is awful sorry. Reminds of the Radfords. Pippa is nice.

Moondancer73 · 03/02/2019 13:18

I love Hallie, actually the only one I like. Much more unusual.

anatol · 03/02/2019 13:53

I really like Hallie!

Peachbubble · 03/02/2019 15:20

I'd choose Matilda

DramaAlpaca · 03/02/2019 15:21

I'd go for Matilda.

Parthenope · 03/02/2019 15:27

Hallie or Matilda -- I don't like Pippa, or Philippa.

Hallie can be short for Halimeda, a Greek name meaning something like 'sea-keeper' or 'sea-carer' -- I think she was a Nereid in Greek myth. Less glamorously, it's also a type of marine algae. There's a very cool Halimeda in Barbara Kingsolver's novel Animal Dreams, though she ends up murdered by Nicaraguan Contras.

Sarahandduck18 · 03/02/2019 15:28

They are very trendy and will really date.

TatianaLarina · 03/02/2019 15:36

Matilda.

Don’t like Pippa or Hallie.

Fifthtimelucky · 03/02/2019 16:03

I don't think anyone of the options go particularly well with your sons' names. If I had a Noah and a Jacob, I'd probably go for a biblical name for a daughter too.

Smile19 · 03/02/2019 18:28

Our DD was very very nearly Harriet nn Hallie (old English shortening). Love it.

KiplingAngelCake · 04/02/2019 16:45

In the minority here, but I'd go with Pippa.

lottiegarbanzo · 04/02/2019 17:19

I've never heard of Halie. Is it Hal-ee or an unusual spelling of Hailey? Or Hall-ee I suppose?

I'm afraid I think 'Hal-ee-tosis' when trying to decipher it.

Either of the others would be nice. I'd probably choose Matilda, as Tilly is lovely and I like that the full name and nn sound different, so it offers a choice.

OutPinked · 04/02/2019 17:21

Not a fan of Hallie, it’s very American. Pippa is cute but I wouldn’t like to be an adult called Pippa. Matilda is the best.

ChubsyMcChubFace · 04/02/2019 17:54

I like Matilda the best and think it goes best with Jacob and Noah too.

Pippa I’m not fond of on its own... I only like it as a shortening for Philippa. I’m not one of those people who insists on a long name on the BC or anything, but Pippa I find a bit unsubstantial on its own. It also means hand job, (I think), in Spanish Blush - sorry to lower the tone.

Hallie = halitosis to me and I can’t stop that association!

So definitely Matilda, which is a lovely name with a lot of history. Love Tilda as a shortening too.
