So many threads on names here Nd not sure where to start!

My GF is 18 weeks pregnant and we were convinced it was to be a girl, however, we have today found out it is a boy.

We would love to find a boys names which is more traditional than modern and trendy, and open to some good suggestions please.

I like Bertie, Arthur and Reginald.

Stephen?

Arthur is very trendy at the moment. It's the 19th most popular boys name in the UK.

When you say "traditional rather than modern," what exactly do you mean? The current trendiest names tend to be names which were popular in the Edwardian era or thereabouts, so they are traditional AND modern.

If you want a timeless classic name, you can't go wrong with things like James, Matthew, Michael, Thomas, Daniel, Paul etc.

Names like Bertie, Reginald or Arthur are traditional in that they are a sort of revival of early 20th century names (or shortened forms thereof), but they are very "2010s" if you see what I mean. They all would have sounded quite odd 20 years ago.

SumAndSubstance · 03/02/2019 23:21

I think Bertie, Arthur and Reginald are VERY trendy. I’ve not come across any who are over five (or over 120)

dolphin50 · 09/02/2019 22:37

samuel is lovely. it means the name of god. in the bible hannah prayed for a child and god granted her a child who would be a voice to his generation. sam always reminds me of a sweet gentle kind and happy boy.

dolphin50 · 09/02/2019 22:39

@SumAndSubstance bertie, arthur and reginald are timeless names. there are many over 120 with these names. my great great grandfather was called reginald. bertie was the name of the queens father and albert which the name often comes from was queen victorias husband and arthur - think king arthur comes to mind.

Kokeshi123 · 10/02/2019 00:18

bertie, arthur and reginald are timeless names. there are many over 120 with these names.

I think the point that SumAndSubstance was trying to make is that people with these names are mostly either over 100 or under 8! Almost nobody in between. They are turn of the century names that have been revived. So no, not timeless. Timeless would be something like James where you can be any age. Not that there is anything WRONG with being trendy--at least you can be sure that they won't be teased on account of their name, and it's easy to protect anonymity when there are a lot of other people with your name.

SumAndSubstance · 10/02/2019 00:25

Yes, that’s exactly what I was trying to say. You saved me a job, Kokeshi, thank you! I agree, there’s nothing wrong with them, but they’re everywhere at the moment when they haven’t been for ages.

SumAndSubstance · 10/02/2019 00:29

I think I probably meant *under 120 in my first post though!

dolphin50 · 10/02/2019 00:32

my cousin is called arthur and he is 25 this year and i know a bertie who is 32 i work with but i get its not as popular as james

SparkiePolastri · 10/02/2019 05:09

bertie, arthur and reginald are timeless names.

No, they're cyclical names - names that have been around for a long time, but come in and out of fashion.

Very few names are genuinely timeless.

How many boys do you know being called Charles (as opposed to Charlie), Paul, Philip, Nicholas, Ronald/Donald, John right now?

They're all classic names, but they're not having their moment in the sun.
