DH and I are extremely keen on giving our DC a unisex name.

So far we have:

  • Jordan / Jordyn
  • Indianna
  • Kennedy
  • Quinn
  • Bailey / Bailee
  • Devon
  • Jesse / Jessie
  • Taylor / Tayla
  • Avery

Honest opinions! (and yes we are in the UK)

They're all a bit Sweet Valley High for me. But if you like them, use them. That which we call a rose and all that.
My name, shortened, is unisex when spoken. And it's a pain in the arse sometimes. But short. So I like it most of the time!

CalamityJane10 · 29/01/2019 19:58

Why would you deliberately set out to choose a name that will create confusion?

abcriskringle · 29/01/2019 19:59

I like Avery and Taylor.

erja · 29/01/2019 20:12

Jordan/Jordyn - absolutely awful for either gender.
Indianna - would spell it Indiana. So girly to me and not a nice name in general.
Kennedy - dislike.
Quinn - I love for a girl. Like for a boy.
Bailey/Bailee - wouldn't spell it double e. It's okay.
Devon - awful.
Jesse/Jessie - love Jesse for a boy. Jessie for a girl is awful.
Taylor/Tayla - dislike for both genders.
Avery - it's okay.

What about -
Indie?
Blair?
Darcy?
Eden?
Lennon?
Tate?
Rory?

All names I know both girls and boys of and are my favourite unisex ones.

Like both Quinn and Avery.

Mostly for boys.

EcceInPictura · 29/01/2019 20:18

Remy/Remi or Sasha/Sacha?

Quinn looks like quim in cursive handwriting, sorry.

I know a girl called Julian - spelled that way. Any good?

glutten4punishment · 29/01/2019 20:38

I love Alex and Riley.

FloatingthroughSpace · 29/01/2019 20:43

Have a friend with a DD Cooper . I reckon a lot of those "job" names could be unisex: Archer, Fletcher, that sort of thing. There's also surnames like Campbell (used for girls in America a lot) or McKenzie.

daisypond · 29/01/2019 20:48

I don't think surname names work well for a girl particularly. How about a nature type name? The name of a river? Thames?

SouthwarkSkaters · 29/01/2019 21:04

At one point a few years ago we had Cameron, Finley and Eliot at our brownies - not sure of the spellings or if they qualify as unisex but I thought I would suggest them.

Jude is biblical, isn’t it? One of the apostles?

anniehm · 29/01/2019 21:14

Not my cup of tea, very American. Plenty of names are shortened to unisex names but they have a full traditional name for work/school - you have to consider this is name on their cv, can it be taken seriously?

epicclusterfuck · 29/01/2019 21:31

Alexandra - Alex

Kennedy is ok and Jesse/Jessie, Devon, Avery and Quinn are all beautiful. Love the unisex idea!

Bailey, Jordan and Taylor are a bit cheap and naff. No offence meant to Taylor Swift. Haters gonna hate

RiverTam · 30/01/2019 09:15

Ice without wanting to be rude to our Antipodean cousins, they are even better than our friends across the pond with their 'yooneek' spellings so I'm really not sure I'd go there for inspiration. A friend down under knows a child called Summah, which said in a London accent, at any rate - possibly any British accent - just makes you sound incredibly gormless.

Daisy I know of two women called Julian - now I've got used to it I much prefer it for a girl than a boy!

RiverTam · 30/01/2019 09:16

I would also ditto the comments about Quinn being too close to quim - possibly quim is not a word in use in the US/Canada/Australia.

tammytoby · 30/01/2019 14:42

Never ever heard of quim..! I doubt any kids would.

Love Quinn for a boy!

daisypond · 30/01/2019 14:48

Tammy But kids grow up. And they have older brothers and sisters. Quim is the first thing I would think of if I saw Quinn as a first name, I'm afraid.

RiverTam · 30/01/2019 14:50

yes, I didn't know this word as a child but I have known it as an adult for decades!

People have to live with their names for longer than the first 18 years of life...
