Opinions on unisex names

IceTippedMountains · 29/01/2019 06:31

DH and I are extremely keen on giving our DC a unisex name.

So far we have:

  • Jordan / Jordyn
  • Indianna
  • Kennedy
  • Quinn
  • Bailey / Bailee
  • Devon
  • Jesse / Jessie
  • Taylor / Tayla
  • Avery

Honest opinions! (and yes we are in the UK)

I love unisex names. Quinn is lovely

OutPinked · 29/01/2019 10:58

Jordan / Jordyn- you don’t need to alter the spelling of this to make it a girls name, I went to school with a female Jordan.

  • Indianna - Jones?
  • Kennedy- it’s a surname
  • Quinn- I like this but associate with boys
  • Bailey / Bailee- yuck
  • Devon- not keen on place names
  • Jesse / Jessie- Jesse is lovely, not keen on it for a girl
  • Taylor / Tayla- I mean the girls spelling is just made up...
  • Avery- nice for a girl.
OutPinked · 29/01/2019 11:00

Jude isn’t unisex, really bugs me when people use obvious male names for females. Judith is a female name and some Judith’s use Jude as a diminutive but Jude as a stand alone name is a (very lovely) male name.

Annoyed with the recent influx of male names being used for females. James for a girl ffs...

  • Jordan / Jordyn - Jordan is not too bad. Jordyn is awful.
  • Indianna - Indiana is better but I wouldn't use it.
  • Kennedy - not keen. Ken.
  • Quinn - no
  • Bailey / Bailee - Bailey is a bit dated. Bailee is awful
  • Devon - not too bad
  • Jesse / Jessie - Jessica is nice
  • Taylor / Tayla - awful
  • Avery - no
Sophronia · 29/01/2019 11:21

How about Rowan or Morgan?

goldengummybear · 29/01/2019 11:29

What about names where the nickname can be unisex - Georgie (Georgina), Charlotte (Charlie) ?

My dd has a unisex name which is more male than female in the UK but more female than male in the US and she hates being mistaken for a boy and it happens a lot. My name is definitely feminine and when I was growing up I thought that the girls with unisex (nick)names were so cool bit my dd disagrees.

Butterfly84 · 29/01/2019 11:58

Not overly keen on any in your list.

What about Morgan? Or Ellis?

morsestudent · 29/01/2019 14:45
  • Jordan / Jordyn -- I didn't know the Katie Price connection, and I do like Jordan (but not Jordyn)
  • Indianna -- would spell Indiana and is unequivocally a boys name because of the Indiana Jones connection, in my opinion
  • Kennedy -- had never heard of this as a first name but I actually really like it, particularly for a girl
  • Quinn -- just reminds me of quim, definitely wouldn't use it regardless of gender
  • Bailey / Bailee -- hate Bailee, and Bailey reminds me of the Old Bailey as in the court
  • Devon -- really love this, again hadn't heard of it as a name but it's lovely
  • Jesse / Jessie -- again love, particularly the male Jesse spelling
  • Taylor / Tayla -- I like Taylor for either gender, wouldn't bother changing the spelling to Tayla for a girl as that would change pronunciation in some accents
  • Avery -- my only connotation for Avery, and I realise this is niche, is that it's the name of a Death Eater in the Harry Potter books, so that really puts me off!

Would second suggestions of Morgan, Frankie, Laurie, and Gene.

lilyblue5 · 29/01/2019 14:59

Jordan, Quinn, Jesse, Avery for me

hatethinkingofusernames · 29/01/2019 15:00

I really like Quinn for a boy or girl I'm not keen on the rest though

RiverTam · 29/01/2019 15:10

This is quite a sexed list to me:

Jordan / Jordyn - only truly unisex name but horrible

  • Indianna - despite Indiana Jones, this looks like a girl's name and is spelt wrong!
  • Kennedy - girl's
  • Quinn - girl's
  • Bailey / Bailee - girl's
  • Devon - yes, unisex
  • Jesse / Jessie - Jesse is a boy's name, Jessie a girl's. Do not call your child Jesse if you live in Scotland! (It's an insult - ya big jesse! (ie big girl's blouse)
  • Taylor / Tayla - more boy than girl
  • Avery - girl's

I also wouldn't say that any of this names are especially unique or different - they're just American!

starkid · 29/01/2019 15:13

I like these ones from your list the most (and these spellings no matter the sex)

  • Indiana
  • Quinn
  • Bailey
  • Avery

Other unisex names I like, some have already been mentioned:
Frankie
Sam
River
Peyton
Indigo
Leigh
Sawyer
Skye

goldengummybear · 29/01/2019 15:41

Not keen on Bailey because of the alcohol connection. Like the name Chardonnay it sounds chavvy

Pieceofpurplesky · 29/01/2019 15:57

On your list I love Quinn.

I also love Finn for a boy or girl.

Upalln1ght · 29/01/2019 16:18

@Outpinked yikes!

I know 2 ladies called Jude and have only heard of Jude Law as a male. Maybe it's more popular where I live (UK) and not so much where you live. No harm.

MikeUniformMike · 29/01/2019 16:18

Bailey was popular at the same time as Shannon, in the 1990s. The trend died before reaching other shipping areas so AFAIK there aren't any 20-yr old Doggers or Bights around.

The list of unisex names seems a bit downmarket.
Riley seems to be popular. The trouble with unisex names is that they tend to be girly on boys or boyish on girls, and being mistaken for the opposite sex isn't good.

Names like Leslie/Lesley, Ashley, Lindsay, Lee/Leigh, Courtney and Kim are those of people I have worked with. If you heard the name, could you guess which colleagues were male and which were female?

Twelve8Ts · 29/01/2019 16:35

Girls
Noa
Frederica (nn Freddie)
Blake
Drew
Stevie
Ellis
Loui
Parker
Milla
Evan

Boys
Brook
Laurence (nn Laurie)
Beck
Blair
Miller
Cass

Agree the majority do sound American but you’re obviously okay with that.

Didyeeaye · 29/01/2019 19:07

I love kennedy and Quinn. They are cool names that work for both gender.
Surname type names work great for either sex . How about Monroe, Harlow or Blair?

daisypond · 29/01/2019 19:17

I don't think Kennedy or Quinn are at all cool. In fact, I think they're downmarket and naff. Quinn is particularly awful on a girl.

Ngaio2 · 29/01/2019 19:29

I like Robin ( not keen on Robyn) for both
Brook. — could add an e for a girl
Alex or Alexis for both
Cody for both.

Namehunting001 · 29/01/2019 19:34

What do you think of Harley?

IceTippedMountains · 29/01/2019 19:41

Thanks guys, I like Morgan but I already know one closely.

Out I trawled through some top baby names in Australia and that's where I got the Tayla for a girl (in top 100) and Taylor for a boy.

I see Quinn has been seen as both boys and girls names on here which is what I want, probably definitely our front runner and ditto Devon, glad people like Avery as I was not sure.

I love Indiana, but hmm you could be right about the Indiana Jones connection.

DH is not overly mad on Bailey so yeah might scratch that off the list...

Namehunting Harley Davidson! I like it but my family are big petrol-heads so I think I would get laughed at.
