Ariadne / Ariadni

Got about 9 weeks to go before we meet our little girl and we can't settle on a name.

What are your thoughts on Ariadne (could also be spelt Ariadni but I'm more interested in what you think of the name than the spellings.)

DH is Greek, for context. Surname also Greek. We live in the UK.

Thanks!

Oh, and is the nickname Ari so bad? A family member on my side recently commented 'ah but she'll get called Ari!' pronounced as you would 'Harry' if you dropped the H.

I love it, prefer the e spelling but it was one of my top choices, though ended up with a boy.

HeronLanyon · 28/01/2019 05:23

Never seen I spelling. E spelling for sure or it would be seen as trying to be ‘yooneeck’ ??
Would name shorten (4 syllables so it will be surely) to Ria?

Panoramarama · 28/01/2019 05:28

True, can see how the I spelling could look a bit 'yooneeeck'!

Thanks Earthbound. Any Greek connection or just liked the name?

I knew an Ariadne at uni. It's a great name. Never heard her called anything except Ariadne.

ThePoliticiansPraiseMyName · 28/01/2019 05:35

I love Ariadne. Wouldn't spell it with an 'i'.

Stringofpearls · 28/01/2019 05:58

Ariadne was in our top 3 and is such a lovely name, unusual but not weird. Had we used it I think we'd have gone with Addy as the nickname, but these tend to develop over time any way.

Kikipost · 28/01/2019 06:05

I immediately think “spider”

MyNewBearTotoro · 28/01/2019 06:08

I love it!

rainbowstardrops · 28/01/2019 06:38

I immediately thought spider too

NicolaStart · 28/01/2019 07:00

Lovely name.
Spell it with an e
Ari is fine, but actually if you always use a full name it doesn’t necessarily get shortened. I know Christophers who are never called Chris, David’s, Benjamins, Leonoras etc who all go by full name.

CocoLoco87 · 28/01/2019 07:35

If you wanted a nickname then does Ria work better than 'arry Grin

I like Ariadne!

Panoramarama · 28/01/2019 07:36

Thanks for your replies. Very interesting to hear that it was in the shortlist of a few other people - perhaps with no Greek connection. Reassures me that it wouldn't seem odd in an English class room.

Why the spider connection? Although that doesn't worry me really. Is it because of the word arachnid?

Not keen on Ria. Might just abandon the nickname idea, like some have suggested!

Gorgeous!

AuntieStella · 28/01/2019 07:37

I think it's a lovely name (unfortunately DH didn't)

I wouid spell it Ariadne (in UK)

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 28/01/2019 08:24

I'd go with Addy for the nickname. I think Ariadne is beautiful.

Miane · 28/01/2019 08:27

Ariadne the Spider was a character in a children’s TV programme (Creepy Crawlies) some years ago.

HumpHumpWhale · 28/01/2019 08:27

I love it, and actually think Ari is a really cute nickname for a little girl. I knew one a few years ago(Arianna), and it really worked. She was a chubby, cheerful little darling and Ari/'Arry just really suited her.

DiddyLongLegs · 28/01/2019 08:30

I think it's a lovely name, and I wouldn't think people would have difficulty pronouncing it regardless of the spelling. However if you're not sure how about Adriana, or Ariana which are similar but maybe a little less unusual?

bridgetreilly · 28/01/2019 08:45

It would be unusual in England, but not strange and unheard of. Most people would know how to pronounce it and spell it. I think it's a good choice.

NicolaStart · 28/01/2019 08:51

Maybe Aria for short, but Ariadne is hardly a mouthful.

Pet names evolve and are within your choice. I could see me cooing at an Ariadne of my own as NiNi: like Mimi but with n. But I wouldn’t use it out of the house.

I am familiar with Ariadne but never heard of Adriana or Ariana.

raspberrycordial · 28/01/2019 08:54

Love Ariadne, dh would never have gone for it unfortunately. Im as English as you get too, definitely the traditional spelling especially as your dh is Greek

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 28/01/2019 09:00

It's nice.
Spell with the E
